Warner Bros. & DC Entertainment Present Cause Marketing Campaign: Darkness & Light
1. Darkness & Light: We Can Be Heroes
Darkness & Light is a one-of-a-kind art
and education tour to raise awareness
and funds for the hunger crisis in the Horn
of Africa.

2. Darkness & Light is a signature
initiative of We Can Be Heroes, a
giving campaign designed to raise
awareness and funds for the worst
hunger crisis in 60 years that is
taking place in the Horn of Africa.
Using the iconic Justice League
characters from DC Entertainment,
We Can Be Heroes aims to raise
substantial funds for three
humanitarian aid organizations:
Save the Children, International
Rescue Committee, and Mercy
Corps.

at stake during frequent cycles of drought that often spiral into food shortages. In July
2011, the United Nations declared a famine in the region.

4. "The members of the Justice League
are an international team of super
heroes beloved by a broad range of
fans, including men and women,
young and old. This makes them the
perfect ‘spokes characters’ for this
campaign. Their dedication to social
justice and commitment to band
together to defend the helpless
brilliantly supports the ideals of the
We Can Be Heroes campaign. The
hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa is
something we can reverse if we all
work together." – Diane Nelson,
President, DC Entertainment

5. Despite aid being delivered by a variety of humanitarian organizations, more than 8
million people are still in need of immediate assistance and thousands of children
suffer from malnutrition. Every day, Save the Children – a beneficiary of the We Can
Be Heroes campaign – feeds hundreds of children in their four camps in the area.

6. The centerpiece of the unique
Darkness & Light collection is a
large-scale piece of original artwork
by Jim Lee, the legendary artist and
DC Entertainment co-publisher.
Using the beloved characters of the
famed Justice League, DC
Entertainment is spreading
awareness and education about the
Horn of Africa crisis.
7. In early February 2012, the United Nations downgraded the famine, and malnutrition
rates in some areas of the drought-hit areas have improved. However, expected rains
across the region have largely failed, leading to widespread devastation of farmland,
failed harvests and livestock death as the crisis pushes resiliency to the limit.

8. “I have been a fan of DC Comics’ Justice
League characters, especially Batman, since
I was young and am thrilled to be working
with DC Entertainment on their We Can Be
Heroes giving campaign. We Can Be Heroes
is doing its part to help fight this crisis and I
feel honored to be a part of this campaign.”
– Chris Daughtry, campaign ambassador.
We Can Be Heroes’ unique ability to find
new and passionate partners through the
iconic images of the Justice League is
captured in the recently announced
support of singer Chris Daughtry. Chris
Daughtry and his band recorded a new
version of the song “Rescue Me” with
proceeds from iTunes sales donated to the
campaign. Daughtry will also bring the
important message of We Can Be Heroes to
audiences at their U.S. summer tour Break
the Spell.

9. Reports from April 2012 confirm that food insecurity and the resulting wide-spread
malnutrition in the Horn of Africa is expected to worsen. Children who are able to
reach hospitals or camps like those provided by Save the Children, International
Rescue Committee, and Mercy Corps can be given the critical care and nutrition
needed to survive the ongoing crisis.

10. Due to severe malnourishment, many children arrive at refugee camps mentally ill as
well as physically. Since launching in January 2012, We Can Be Heroes nonprofit
partners Save the Children, International Rescue Committee and Mercy Corps have
delivered aid to the nearly 200,000 refugees living in camps. Photo Courtesy Save the
