Although leadership communication research has a history of significant overlap with leadership psychology, the value commitments of a communicative orientation now find expres- sion in a large body of extant literature that this paper reviews. These value commitments, which cross several theoretical paradigms, serve as the organizing framework for this paper. The paper concludes with a research agenda for future leadership communication research. Keywords Leadership, communication, management of meaning, sensemaking, reflexivity, relational leadership, team leadership, global leadership Introduction Contemporary studies of leadership give meaning to the old adage, ‘‘Everything old is new again.’’ Leadership has been a topic of interest since antiquity (Grint, 2011), although it commenced in earnest in the 20th century when the dominant lens of psychology took hold and remains strong until this day, especially in North America. In the last several years, however, an increasing number of voices are challenging leadership psychology’s emphasis on a strong inner motor of leader traits, cognitions, and styles (Collinson and Hearn, 1996; Fairhurst, 2007a; Grint, 2000). These voices are clamoring to know how leadership distrib- utes itself across time and task, site and situation, and people—along with their bodies and other leadership-making materialities (e.g., technology) (Connaughton and Daly, 2005; Gronn, 2000; Sinclair, 2005). Research on social presence and online learning continues to grow. But to date, researchers continue to define and conceptualize social presence very differently. For instance, at a basic level, some conceptualize social presence as one of three presences within a Community of Inquiry, while others do not. Given this problem, we analyzed how researchers in highly cited social presence research defined social presence in an effort to better understand how they are defining social presence and how this might be changing over time. In this article, we report the results of our inquiry and conclude with implications for future research and practice.

We conceptualise CSR communication as a process of reciprocal influence between organisations and their audiences. We use an illustrative case study in the form of a conflict between firms and a powerful stakeholder which is played out in a series of 20 press releases over a two-month period to develop a framework of analysis based on insights from linguistics. It focuses on three aspects of dialogism, namely (i) turn-taking (co-operating in a conversation by responding to the other party), (ii) inter-party moves (the nature and type of interaction action characterising a turn i.e., denial, apology, excuse), and (iii) intertextuality (the intensity and quality of verbal interaction between the parties). We address the question: What is the nature and type of verbal interactions between the parties? First we examine (a) whether the parties verbally interact and then (b) whether the parties listen to each other. We find evidence of dialogism suggesting that CSR communication is an interactive process which has to be understood as a function of the power relations between a firm and a specific stakeholder. Also, we find evidence of intertextuality in the press releases by the six firms which engage in verbal interaction with the stakeholder. We interpret this as linguistic evidence of isomorphic processes relating to CSR practices resulting from the pressure exerted by a powerful stakeholder. The lack of response by ten firms that fail to issue press releases suggests a strategy of ‘watch-and-wait’ with respect to the outcome of the conflict.

In contemporary organizations, human resources are considered to be the most strategic assets. Given that effective organizational communication has been recognized as a crucial factor in enhancing organizational outcomes, it is undoubtedly the most critical dynamic in keeping employees committed to the organization and satisfied in their work. While several researchers have sought to establish an understanding of how the context of the organization influences communication processes, studies in the field of public administration have provided little knowledge about organizational communication and effects. A thorough review of the existing literature in this field revealed a research gap that brought to mind the following research question: What is the impact of organizational communication on organizational commitment and job satisfaction in the Namibian public organizations? An empirical study of 100 public employees from 25 Namibian Government Ministries was conducted to answer this research question.

As a theoretical concern, agency is a thread that runs through most propositions about communicative praxis and organizing; indeed, it lies at the heart of tensions between modernist and postmodern accounts that have animated organizational communication research for more than two decades (Mumby, 1997). Scholars concerned with the ability of organizing to obtain social justice are particularly inter- ested in theorizing and problematizing agency because it is implicated in any account of social change and transformation, or the lack thereof. This essay starts by positioning agency in deceptively simple terms: as the capacity to act. In an influential 2005 essay, Campbell states that the word agency is “polysemic and ambiguous” (p. 1), rife with rich and often contra- dictory notions about the production of modernity and subjectivity, and the place of communication in the world. Agency is crucial for scholars concerned with social movement organizing for many reasons, but perhaps more than any other, the need to unpack the relationship between the communicative labor of social movements and broader social transformation. In other words, a central question for social movement organizing centers on the ability to move. The Capacity to Act Against the modernist conception of the capacity to act as inhering in the autonomous individual subject, Campbell positions agency as communal and participative. As she notes, a slew of social theories tell us that agency is constituted by externals: it is produced and provided by overarching institu- tional orders and fields; by flexible and overlapping intersections of race, class, gender, and sex.

Running head: WHAT MANAGERS OFTEN WANT WHAT MANAGERS OFTEN WANT What Managers Often Want Name Organisational Theory 26 August 2014 INTRODUCTION For the past number of decades, most academics and practitioners studying organizations suggest the concept of culture is the climate and practices that organizations develop around their handling of people (Schein, 2004). Organizational culture is the basic pattern of shared assumptions, values, and beliefs considered to be the correct way of thinking about and acting on problems and opportunities facing the organization. According to Wilson (2014), it is a rationale for people’s behavior, a guideline for action, a cause for condemnation or praise, a quality that makes a company what it is. In relation to the preceding definition, Arnold (2005) indicates that organizational culture is the distinctive norms, beliefs, principles and ways of behaving that combine to give each organization its distinct character. A clear understanding of organizational culture is virtually imperative in the organisation, as it will help management to understand what the real issues as pertains to the organisation’s operations are, which areas need attention and what can be done to address the identified gaps. There is a need for management to understand the concept of organization culture to better synergy and performance. Social scientists have explored the notion of organizational culture as a perspective in organizational theory over the past decades. According to Zheng (2014) current interests in organizational culture stems from at least four different sources: climate research, national cultures, human resource management and from conviction approaches which emphasize the rational and structural nature of the organization to be unable to offer a full explanation of organizational behaviour. The origin of organizational culture from a national culture point of view is based, among others, on the work of Deal and Kennedy (1982). According to this view organizational culture is seen as being central to organizational success rather than factors such as structure, strategy or politics. As a result the attention shifted away from national cultures and focused more on organizational culture. Interests in organizational culture from the human resource management and performance point of views stems from the fact that organisational culture was perceived to be offering a non-mechanistic, flexible and imaginative approach to understanding how organizations work (Zhang, 2014). Consequently, organisational culture is considered to be the great “cure-all” for most organisational problems (Wilson, 1992). Other theoretical development of the concept organisational culture includes studies conducted within the field of organisational theory.
