This will provide you with an accurate picture as to Alaska’s scope.
As for the size of Alaska, it is quite extensive. You can easily fit the state of Texas into its borders more than twice.
But Alaska is more than just Mountains and snow covered peaks.
You can also point out why this particular cruise is promoted as so smooth. The inland passage provides protection as well as unparalleled scenery.
Non-stop scenery that can’t be duplicated and never grows old. You will find yourself oo-ing and ah-ing throughout your entire trip.
If one had to draw a bulls eye on the sceneoramic dartboard, it would have to be Mt. McKinley, known as Denali which means “The Great One”. Clear one minute, cloudy the next, either being bathed in sunshine or steady rain. It truly is a magnificent attraction.
Point out that out of our country’s 20 highest peaks, 17 are in Alaska. Denali tops out at 20,320 feet or just about 4 miles above sea level.
Or rivers.
This shot shows the train, the river and the Mountain as we rounded a bend in the tracks. We were headed for a tunnel under that mountain range ahead heading for the ship waiting for us on the other side.
In addition to non-stop scenery, we went to Alaska to see the glaciers in all their magnificence.

Silence
And don’t forget the Eagles
Once nearing extinction, the Bald Eagle has rebounded and there is no shortage of eagles or viewings of eagles. But each time you spot one, it give you a special thrill.
If we has to pick a single attraction in Alaska that we will remember forever, it was spotting the whales in their natural surroundings. The humpback whale is one of the world's most endangered species of whales. They're known to surface and breech throughout the Inside Passage, Prince William Sound and Glacier Bay, and are able to stay underwater for up to 30 minutes. The humpback can live up to 95 years, and consumes between 2,000 and 9,000 pounds of fish and krill a day. They are typically 30 to 50 feet long and weight up to 40 tons. They can be seen in the waters off the coast of Alaska and British Columbia in the summer and spend winters in warm waters.
The bottom right photo depicts a normal whale watching vessel and you can count on seeing duplications of the photos here. This too is beyond most people’s every day experience and one that you will remember for years to come. We happen to see a phenomenon know=n as “bubble feeding”. This is where a group of whales, working together, exhale and form a huge field of bubbles which drives the small fish to the surface. Then, as if they were choreographed, the whales shoot to the surface with their mouths open and inhgest as many fish as one gulp allows. In doing so, they shoot up and out of the water creating a scene that is incredible. Be careful when taking photographs as you will probably miss many of these sudden unexpected occurrences. My suggestion is that you take it all in with your naked eye and purchase a few pictures to remind you of the afternoon.
I wanted to show you how the exhale creates what looks like a mist which hangs in the air for a few seconds. These mists are easy to see from a distance and draws your attention to the next surfacing act.
But you will see brown beers, or grizzly bears. Not this close but chances are you will spot them off in the distance foraging on the mountain sides.
And, less we forget, we are taking this all in while enjoying the full benefits that only a cruise ship can offer. This shot was taken in Skagway and look how close the mountains are to the ship.
