- Frida’s life is known to have start and ended in what is known as “The Blue House” built by her father . Frida was born in Coyoacan, Mexican, which is a suburb of Mexico City. Although her birth certificate states her birthday July 6, 1907, years later she claimed that her birth date was July 7th, 1910 to correspond with the date the Mexican Revolution Began. Coming from parents with different background, Frida decided to change the German spelling of her name from Frieda to Frida. Her father as well changed his name from Wilhelm Kahlo to a more Spanish descent Guillermo Kahlo.
- Frida’s life was full of hardship from the beginning of her life, when her mother was unable to breast feed her and had to hire an Indian nurse to her case of polio at age six. When diagnosed with polio, it stunted the growth of her leg and grew very thin. Her father made every effort to try and help Frida by helping her exercise regularly but her foot stayed deformed. She tried many things to try to cover her deformed leg by wearing pants or double socks. Childhood classmates would also tease her by calling her “peg-leg Frida”. During her accident that took place in Sept. 1925, it was an event that would changed her life forever. Frida went through 30 operations and was told would not be able to carry a baby full-term due to the damage that was done due to the accident which consisted of multiple injuries, such as a broken pelvic bone, spinal column, and other severe injuries and survival was at risk. It was also then when Frida was given her first paint brush from her father, an amateur painter since it was going to take months to recuperate.
