Introduction
On these pages are collected the first edition of the
Social Pros All-Stars. Each leads social media efforts
for a major B2C brand, and each has appeared on the
popular Social Pros podcast.
Each week on the podcast, my co-hosts and I interview
a pro who is guiding social media efforts for a major
company or organization. We discuss tips, trends,
best practices and what it takes to be a Social Pro.
After 110+ episodes, we’ve gathered together this
first batch of All-Stars to provide a handy reference
for the education and employment history of some
of America’s leading social media professionals,
alongside interesting facts and their best advice for
aspiring social media managers.
Once I gathered the background data on these 26
All-Stars, four interesting patterns started to emerge.
Read on to see what ties them together, and what their
background says about the career path of Social Pros…

Agency or Consulting Experience
Common Among Social Pros
Among this inaugural group of Social Pros All-Stars, 58%
have worked at an advertising/marketing/PR agency
and/or run their own consultancy.
Of course, this is not a randomly selected sample of
social media professionals, and the total number of
included Pros is small. However, seeing agency
experience in the employment history of more than
half of the All-Stars doesn’t surprise me, as the broad
task assignments and fast-paced nature of agency work
can be a good preparatory ground for large-scale social
media management.

Marketing Education Not Required
Without investigation, I would have expected a
majority of Social Pros to have a marketing or
related degree, given the increasingly emphasis
on tying social media to business outcomes in
most large companies. However, this collection
of All-Stars belies that prediction, as just 24%
have marketing/business/advertising degree.
Fully half of the professionals included here have
undergraduate degrees in English, EnglishLiterature,
Public Relations, orJournalism. Given the historically
written nature of social media interactions, this
makes sense. Considering, however, how visually-
oriented social media has become, I wonder if up-
and-coming Social Pros will be more likely to have
art and photography-oriented degrees?

Among the Social Pros All-Stars included in this inaugural
B2C group, 31% have a Masters degree. That group of
advanced degree holders is split almost equally among
those with a MBA and those with a Masters degree in
something other than business.
At least at this point in the evolution of social media within
American companies, a Masters degree is not a require-
ment to oversee social media marketing functions.
Twitter and Instagram are Favorites
Among Social Pros
According to data from Edison Research released in 2014,
58% of Americans 12 or older have a personal Facebook page;
19% have a personal Linkedin account; 19% have a personal
Instagram account; and 16% have a personal Twitter account.
Among these Social Pros, however, preferred social networks
are far different than the national usage data might suggest.
53% of Social Pros All-Stars say that Twitter is their favorite
social network, and Instagram is the favorite of another 31%.
Remarkably, Facebook, which is far and away the largest social
network by consumer usage, and is also the most widespread
social network used by business (alongside Twitter), is the
favorite of just two of the Social Pros All-Stars in this collection.
Why is Facebook so popular among the masses, but not as popu-
lar among people who manage social media professionally?
Also surprising (at least to me), is that Pinterest was not
mentioned at all.

  • 3. Introduction On these pages are collected the first edition of the Social Pros All-Stars. Each leads social media efforts for a major B2C brand, and each has appeared on the popular Social Pros podcast. Each week on the podcast, my co-hosts and I interview a pro who is guiding social media efforts for a major company or organization. We discuss tips, trends, best practices and what it takes to be a Social Pro. After 110+ episodes, we’ve gathered together this first batch of All-Stars to provide a handy reference for the education and employment history of some of America’s leading social media professionals, alongside interesting facts and their best advice for aspiring social media managers. Once I gathered the background data on these 26 All-Stars, four interesting patterns started to emerge. Agency or Consulting Experience Common Among Social Pros Among this inaugural group of Social Pros All-Stars, 58% have worked at an advertising/marketing/PR agency and/or run their own consultancy. Of course, this is not a randomly selected sample of social media professionals, and the total number of included Pros is small. However, seeing agency experience in the employment history of more than half of the All-Stars doesn’t surprise me, as the broad task assignments and fast-paced nature of agency work can be a good preparatory ground for large-scale social media management. 42%without agency experience 58%with agency experience

Marketing Education Not Required Without investigation, I would have expected a majority of Social Pros to have a marketing or related degree, given the increasingly emphasis on tying social media to business outcomes in most large companies. However, this collection of All-Stars belies that prediction, as just 24% have marketing/business/advertising degree. Fully half of the professionals included here have undergraduate degrees in English, EnglishLiterature, Public Relations, orJournalism. Given the historically written nature of social media interactions, this makes sense. Considering, however, how visually- oriented social media has become, I wonder if up- and-coming Social Pros will be more likely to have art and photography-oriented degrees?   • 6. 31%with advanced degree 69%without advanced degree Advanced Degree Not Required Among the Social Pros All-Stars included in this inaugural B2C group, 31% have a Masters degree. That group of advanced degree holders is split almost equally among those with a MBA and those with a Masters degree in something other than business. At least at this point in the evolution of social media within American companies, a Masters degree is not a require- ment to oversee social media marketing functions.
  • 7. Twitter and Instagram are Favorites Among Social Pros According to data from Edison Research released in 2014, 58% of Americans 12 or older have a personal Facebook page; 19% have a personal Linkedin account; 19% have a personal Instagram account; and 16% have a personal Twitter account. Among these Social Pros, however, preferred social networks are far different than the national usage data might suggest. 53% of Social Pros All-Stars say that Twitter is their favorite social network, and Instagram is the favorite of another 31%. Remarkably, Facebook, which is far and away the largest social network by consumer usage, and is also the most widespread social network used by business (alongside Twitter), is the favorite of just two of the Social Pros All-Stars in this collection. Why is Facebook so popular among the masses, but not as popu- lar among people who manage social media professionally? Also surprising (at least to me), is that Pinterest was not mentioned at all.
