3. Structure of the
conference
• 2 days (same days as KMWorld workshops
& first day of KMWorld sessions)
• first morning - Fundamentals Workshop
with Marjorie Hlava OR concurrent
sessions
• cases studies OR advanced technical
discussions
Monday, November 25, 2013
4. Impressions
• THE conference if you are into taxonomy
and metadata!
• content for all levels
• ranged from introductory to highly
advanced and technical
Monday, November 25, 2013
5. Key Take-aways
• User experience and design are not
everything - things need to be organized to
function (IM = Yin UX = Yang)
• test anything you create on a sub-set of your
data to make sure it works
• reserve use of your subject matter experts
(SMEs) for the final reviews - (for systems
where the audience is wider than just SMEs)
• it is more difficult to build a taxonomy of 10
terms than one of 1000 terms
Monday, November 25, 2013
7. Structure of the
conference
• 1 day workshops + 3 days concurrent sessions in
3 streams
(my stream: KM Strategies & Practices)
• run concurrently with
• Taxonomy Boot Camp
• Enterprise Search Summit
• SharePoint Symposium
• keynotes, breaks and lunches presented jointly
Monday, November 25, 2013
8. Take-aways - Keynotes
• need to “muscle” way into spaces that
design and IT are in
• concept of “big data” is being
misunderstood and overblown
• Dave Snowden: we still need humans to
know what questions to ask and to
interpret the data
Monday, November 25, 2013
9. Take-aways - Social
• Forrester Research: 55% of organizations
have or are planning to enable social
• “social” is no longer separate from KM
• Yammer has forced the issue on social, has
subverted leadership’s efforts
• if you do not set up social for your staff,
they will do it themselves
• Unisys: CEO has helped lead the way with
adoption
Monday, November 25, 2013
10. Take-aways
• it’s all about interconnectivity, getting
systems to work together
• Unisys’ killer app: use a hashtag in the
microblog, anyone who has that hashtag in
their profile (under “ask me about”) is
notified with an email

11. From Melinda Bickerstaff’s
wrap-up
Senior Manager/Principal,
Talent & Organization
Performance Practice,
Accenture Federal Services
• Intranets:
• 1st generation - information management
• 2nd generation - codification
• 3rd generation - connection and collaboration
Monday, November 25, 2013
12. Bickerstaff (cont’d)
• 4 big forces for 3rd generation affecting KM
now and in future:
1. digital immersion
2. social computing
3. demographics and dynamics
4. mobile devices and video
• over 50% of the world’s population is under
30; 96% of them have joined a social network
