2. If you’re in the market for a laptop, the question now is:
Which one do you get?
Whether it’s a matter of getting one with:
• A very high-end laptop parts,
• A very low price, or
• One with a balanced combination of both aspects.
This guide will help you narrow down your choices to a select few.
3. One of the best thin-and-lights around, the
Acer Aspire Timeline M5 is surprisingly also
one of the most affordable. Coming in at just
$680 for the base model, this 14- or 15-incher
(it’s available in both body variants) can be
equipped with a fairly powerful NVIDIA GT
640M video card for just an additional $100;
The laptop component makes it capable of
firing up even the latest games available,
albeit at mid-range settings; but then again,
this isn’t a desktop replacement to begin with.
Other plusses include a better-than-average battery and a keyboard and touchpad that are more
comfortable than most to use.
4. The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 may not be
as powerful as the other laptops in this list,
but at a starting price of $500, you will be
getting more functionality bang for your buck.
This being a ThinkPad laptop, its keyboard
and mouse (and nifty trackpointer) are still
among the elite in portable computers. It also
has a long-lasting (and inexpensive) six-cell
extended battery; and adding optional laptop
components and features like an anti-glare
display will still bring the total price below
$600.
5. Slimmer and smaller may be the prevailing trend right now, but for full performance with retained
portability, desktop replacements are where it’s at.
6. Laptop parts that power the G-Series up include high-end hardware like quad-core Intel Core i7
processors, 12 to 16 GB RAM cards, NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 660M video cards, and the like. I’ll
say up front, though, that the ASUS G-Series computers aren’t the best gaming laptops around
when it comes to specs (although they’re pretty much above average). However, at their class, they
are one of the most affordable. Whereas base prices for most gaming laptops won’t go below
$1,500, the G-Series begins at $1,200 and tops at just around $2,000.
For a desktop replacement laptop, that combination of power and price just can’t be beat.
