The First Amendment protects freedom of religion in the United States by prohibiting the government from making laws that establish religion or prohibit free exercise of religion. It also protects freedom of expression by prohibiting laws that curb the freedom of speech or infringe on freedom of the press. The First Amendment was adopted on December 15, 1791 as part of the Bill of Rights.
