Fall Term, 2013, Coastal Savannah Writing Project is offering a 3-credit graduate class in “Strategies
for Teaching K-12 Writing” on 5-1/2 Saturdays. CSWP is also offering a limited number of
scholarships towards the tuition for non-degree students the amount of $671 plus the cost of one required
textbook. The cost of the course for teachers or their schools would be approximately $500 plus the cost
of the second required book, The 9 Rights of Every Writer, (approx. $25) for those eligible for Georgia in-
state tuition (including residents of Beaufort and Jasper counties).
The class will be held on 5-1/2 Saturdays for a total of 40 hours. All sessions will be mandatory, and each
session will focus on a different aspect of writing:
• Session 1: August 17 (9:00-1:00) Introduction and Planning a Writing Curriculum for the Year
• Session 2: August 24 (9:00am-4:00pm) Writing to Learn: Reader Response Strategies to Increase
Reading Comprehension & Writing Fluency
• Session 3: September 21 (9:00am-4:00pm) Learning to Write--Steps & Strategies for Teaching
Writing
• Session 4: October 12 (9:00am-4:00pm) Strategies for Teaching Narrative Writing
• Session 5: October 26 (9:00am-4:00pm) Strategies for Teaching Informative & Explanatory
Writing
• Session 6 November 16 (9:00am-4:00pm) Strategies for Teaching Opinion/Argument Writing
If interested, applicants should
• first notify Lesley Roessing, CSWP, via this email address, of your intent to apply to attend the
course and whether you have attended AASU undergraduate or graduate programs.
• Immediately after you are informed you that we received your intent and that CSWP is still
accepting participants in the course (class size and number of scholarships are limited),
• apply to Armstrong's graduate program as a non-degree student
• submit
o an application form
o $30 fee application fee
o immunization form (which includes an opt-out provision)
o Proof of Lawful Presence documentation - link to information:
http://www.armstrong.edu/images/admissions/Verification_of_Lawful_Presence_Information.pdf
o transcripts which from many institutions can be obtained and paid for through their websites.
o a Border Waiver is required for Beaufort and Jasper county residents.
• If applicants have attended Armstrong, they may not need to pay an application fee, and applicants
who have applied to an Armstrong graduate program in the past may only need to complete a re-
admit form.
Submit non-degree graduate program application directly to "Jill Bell" jill.bell@armstrong.edu and have
transcripts mailed directly to Jill Bell, Director of Graduate Enrollment Services, Victor Hall, Armstrong
Atlantic State University; 11935 Abercorn Street, Savannah Georgia 31419 as soon as possible.
Participants must be accepted and enrolled by the first class, August 17.
