3. The EU is recognizable by several symbols.
Together with the motto and the European
anthem, the European flag is one of the
most well-known symbol of EU.
4. The history of the flag goes back to 1955.
The Council of Europe - defending human
rights and promoting European culture –
adopted the present design of the flag for its
own use.
5. For a long time the Council of Europe
encouraged the European institutions to
adopt the flag as well.
The European Parliament adopted it in 1983.
6. It was also adopted by all EU leaders as the
official emblem of the European Union in
1985.
This flag is not only of the EU symbol but also
of Europe's unity and identity in a wider
sense.
7. The flag consists of a circle of 12 golden stars
on a dark blue background.
The circle of stars represents the unity, the
solidarity and the harmony among all the
countries.
8. The number of stars has nothing to do with
the number of member countries. The flag
remains unchanged regardless of EU
enlargements.
The European Union flag has twelve stars
because this number is traditionally a symbol
of perfection, completeness and unity.
