10. How to improve your English
Some advice on how to improve your English
Just like any sport or activity , the more you practise,
the better you will get.
It is also important to look at the different parts of
the language.
11. Improving your Grammar
GRAMMAR is like a
JIGSAW PUZZLE – the
pieces fit together.
They have been to New York.
MAIN PREP. OBJECT
SUBJECT AUXILIARY VERB
If I had known
I would have told you about it
This is a more complicated structure – it’s a 3rd conditional. Again, the
pieces (subject, auxiliary, verb, etc) must fit together.
12. Improving your pronunciation
English is NOT a phonetic language!!!
I had to subJECT (vb) the SUBject (noun) to a series of tests
I reCORded all my RECords on CD. (Stress is important)
I saw a live concert near where I live.
/ai/ /I/
Just compare heart, beard, and heard
Phonetics /ha:rt/ /biƏ/ /hƷ:d/
The same 3 letters but with different pronunciation.
13. Improving your vocabulary
1.Learn new words by making
them relevant or personal to you.
Library (biblioteca)– I usually study in the Law Faculty
Library.
2.Think about the different FORMS of words.
If you learn a verb check you know if it is regular or irregular
Go (inf) went (past) gone(past participle)
Eat (inf) ate (past) eaten (past participle)
If you learn a noun check you know the other forms.
Success (noun =exito) Succeed (verb= tener exito)
Successful (adjective) Unsuccessful (negative adjective)
3. Think about the pronunciation of the word
Vegetables - /VDJerterbels/ Comfortable /KUMferterbel/
14. Improving your Skills
Speaking
Speak more fluently, more accurately,
more clearly
Listening
Understand more and more easily, more
naturally
Reading
Read faster, stopping less, more enjoyable
Writing
Write more correctly, more complex sentences
more interesting ones
15. SO -REMEMBER YOUR ENGLISHGP(V)S
G is for grammar - tenses, structures, rules,
exceptions
P is for pronunciation – individual sounds of letters,
stress, intonation
(V) is for vocabulary – different forms, phrasal verbs
and expressions
S is for skills – keep a balance by practising them all
(S is also for SMILE)
16. The best way to learn languages is
to be MOTIVATED
relax and enjoy learning
languages are fun !
Everyday, you will learn some new words, some new
structures and so improve.
Focus on the reasons why you are learning
e.g. to travel, to find a job
or just because you love languages!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND
ENJOY THE COURSE
