Randal’s grandfather, Major Gustavus Ferdinand Von Tempsky was born on February 15, 1828
at Konigsberg (Kaliningrad), East Prussia. He was the younger son of Julius Louis von Tempsky and his
wife, Karoline Henriette Friederike Wilhelmine von Studnitz. Gustavus von Tempsky came from an
honored Prussian military family. Major Von Tempsky married Emelia Ross Bell, on July 9, 1855,
Bluefields, Nicaragua.
Major Gustavus Ferdinand Von Tempsky (1828-1868) is described to be,
* An artist skilled with paint and the brush.
“In the best of his New Zealand paintings, colors become intense and saturated, with brilliant emeralds
and blues, clear crimsons and a range of greens decorative rather than realistic” Rose Young, NZ artist
* A brilliant linguist and writer.
To his wife Emelia Ross Bell, the daughter of a British government official he wrote,
“...This moment when I leave the place which I love and cherish because of your presence, I leave for the
field of battle, perhaps for me, the field of death. Read with patience these last lines of mine, of a man
who will love you till death because I assure you that my last thoughts when dying will be you...”

- 3. “Seaflight” by Patrick Ching
Major Gustavus Ferdinand Von Tempsky was a soldier worshipped by the troops who served with him.
“He was always the first in danger and the last to leave it, and never asked any man to do that which, by
example, he was not prepared to do himself. If he had any fault as a soldier, it was the characteristic one
of always being in advance, sometimes, mayhap, too far in advance.” John Roberts, soldier
Armine Von Tempsky, granddaughter of Major Gustavus Ferdinand Von Tempsky, became one of
Hawaii's best-known writers.
Louis Von Tempsky died in 1921. Armine and her sister, Lorna, turned their home and grounds into a
visitor ranch.
Despite the long hours of hard labor, Armine Von Tempsky was intent on pursuing a literary career.
Her third, "Hula," caught the eye of a publisher in New York, who agreed to publish all three. "Hula," a
romance about a girl who grows up on a Maui cattle ranch, was the first to make it to the shelves (von
Tempsky was 35 at the time) and eventually was made into a "talkie" starring Clara Bow and Clive Brook.
Her most popular book was "Born in Paradise," a remembrance of her childhood on Haleakala Ranch.
