3. What type of fishes, where to catch, what kind
of net, at which level & technology aids...
Purposeful strategy is about identifying the specific types of tests needed
to uncover specific types of defects at each stage of development and
then choosing appropriate techniques & execution process model so that
we are optimal and effective.
This is about casting the net in the right direction, with the net being the
right size and material such that the fishes can be indeed caught. It is
equally important to devise measures to enable us assess if we are in the
right direction to aid rapid course correction(s) as needed.

4. “Purposeful strategy and planning”
is Powered by HBT
Hypothesis Based Testing (HBT) is a personal scientific test methodology powered by the defect
detection technology STEMTM to deliver clean software. It consists of six stages, with the first two
stages focused on “Understanding expectations” and “Understanding context”.
The third stage is about “Devising proof” that includes test strategy formulation and
effort estimation. This stage is powered by the “Test strategy & planning” and
“Visibility”disciplines of STEM.
The scientific concepts “Orthogonality principle” and “Quality growth principle”,
“Tooling” needs assessment” of STEM are useful to formulate the strategy.
The discipline of “Tooling” allows the good principles of development to identify tooling
needs for implementing the strategy.The discipline of “Visibility” allows us to devise
measures/metrics that are indeed goal-focused.
These two disciplines of thinking enable one to enable think scientifically to develop a
purposeful strategy and estimate effort rationally. Also they help you to devise measure to stay on
course.
