The 6 Most Common Types of
Water
2. At first glance, all water types appear the same. These are all liquid,
transparent and exist for various needs such as drinking, cooking and
maintenance. Nonetheless, underneath the similarities are factors that set
each type apart.
Water types differ by their sources and the processes they undergo. Some
water types are derived from reservoirs and subterranean water sources
while others are mechanically purified. These vary in composition and
minerals, as well.
Water makes up 75% of humans, emphasising its importance for
consumption. But which water is best for
drinking? Which is used for cooking and home
maintenance needs?
Purified
Purified wateroriginates from spring, surface
or groundwater. It represents the fastest
growing segment in the bottled water industry. Impurities from this type are
removed at extremely low levels. Types of water purification include carbon
filtration, reverse osmosis, distillation and deionization. Because of these
processes, the quality of water from the
source is different from its quality when
bottled.
Tap
Tap water flows freely from home faucets.
It hails fromtwo different sources: lakes
and dams. Waterworks clean this water
depending on its rawness. Chlorine is used to purify this type and is added
with fluoride. Most consumers do not drink tap water, fearing for the
presence of parasites and unwanted chemicals.
3. Spring
Spring water is commonly found in bottled
water. As it originates from the
underground, it most likely lacks treatment.
This water is free from microorganisms and
pollutions, but is exposed to micro-filtration
and UV treatments.
Distilled
This type is a variation of purified water. Distilled water undergoes a
rigorous filtration process to remove contaminants and minerals. Contrary to
popular belief, this water is not for drinking.
Distilled is used best for cars and appliance,
preventing mineral build up.
Drinking
This water is safe for human consumption and
comes from a municipal source. No ingredients are
added unless it is considered safe like fluoride.
Mineral
Mineral water originates from an official recognised source. This type of
water found in mineral springs that contains various minerals such as salts
and sulphur compounds. Mineral water not only prevents dehydration but
also the body with essential minerals.
4. Each water type serves a different purpose. Knowing their source and
filtration processes informs users where to use which water for safety.
