Most people think that the most beautiful smiles belong to celebrities or people whose teeth are perfectly aligned. But just because those smiles show a perfect set of white teeth doesn’t mean they already are in good form. Dental science explains that there is a medical characterisation of the way a person’s teeth should fit together.

‘Bite’ In: Types
of Dental
OcclusionsThe Normal
Bite
A bite is considered normal
when the person’s upper and
lower teeth don’t easily
wear out by coming in
contact with each other. In
this occlusion, the lower
anterior incisors sit behind
the upper anterior incisors.
They don’t meet when the
person bites down.

Such is a concept called ‘occlusion.’ Occlusion doesn’t only
refer to the alignment of the teeth, but also to the way the
upper and lower teeth fit together. It’s also called a ‘bite. ’The
bite is one of the factors that make up a dashing smile and
affect the overall dental health of a person. Listed below are
the types of occlusions, some of which usually cause other
dental problems.

Over jets occur when the upper front teeth cover the
lower front teeth when biting down. Cases like this are
problematic, as it may cause improper dental function.
As the lower teeth get in contact with the palate, the
person may have higher chances of biting it, which may
lead to infections eventually.
Of all these occlusions, over
jet, open bite, cross bite,
and cross bite, may cause a
number of dental problems.
To resolve these problems,
one has to consult with a
dentist who can prescribe
devices that can correct
dental misalignments.

Over jet
Under bite
This is the opposite of over jets. The lower front teeth may cover the upper front teeth. This is
usually caused by the undergrowth of the upper jaw or the overgrowth of the lower jaw. This causes
a number of jaw strains and difficulties when chewing or biting.
Cross bite
This is a dental case where some upper teeth bite on the inside of the lower teeth; the upper teeth
are directed towards the tongue. This may happen on one or both sides of the mouth. The
repercussions of cross bites include premature deterioration of the teeth, gum infections, and
difficulties in chewing.
Open Bite
Open bites are characterised by a gap between the upper
and lower teeth. This usually caused by habits such as,
thumb sucking, and conditions such as jaw growth
problems and tongue thrust. The repercussions of this
malocclusion include difficulties in chewing and the
deterioration of the back teeth.
