- The use of children in war has become very prominent recently, however it has been a patter for a long time. Centuries ago, the greeks first introduced us to this practice in such tales as myths and hylas. Tales that have children as the protagonist. The Romans also made used youths in war, though it was understood that it wasforwnedapon and cruel to use children in war, Plutarch, a roman philopsher, implies that regulations required youths to be at least sixteen years of age.In europe- boys areoudn the age of 12 were used as military squires, not being involved with much combat. This luanched the children crusadses of 1212. and evtually the children were sold into slavery. This picture is supposed to represnet the children’s crussde.
- There are three different forms of the military use of children has children can take direct part in hostilities (child soldiers), or they can be used in support roles such as, spies, messengers, look outs, and sexual slaves; or they can be used for political advantage either as human shields or in propaganda.
- But the average age is 7-
- For the last 24 years, Joseph kony has been in power of Uganda. His power started in the early 1980s as a result of the Holy Spirit movenment. Alice Lakwena who claimed the Holy Spirit had ordered her to overthrow the Ugandan government, which was accused of treating the Acholi people of the North unfairly. She won the support of many people but the government killed her. This led JoshepKony to say he was her cousin and take over the movement. He then transformed the movement in the lords resistance army.
- In 1986 he officially created the LRA. Kony initially said the LRA’s mission was to overthrow the government and rule Uganda based on the Ten Commandments. He rapidly lost support, however, and in frustration Kony began abducting thousands of children to swell its ranks, turning them into killers and unleashing them on villages. The LRA has now turned into a guerilla warfare system that launches vicious attcks and is known for the use of child soldiers. Captives are often forced to kill or rape family members, making it impossible for them to think about returning home. Those who do resist or try to escape are tortured and killed.
- Since he over took the Ugandan government, Kony has been leading the government and making it acceptable for the use of children in war. The idea of military use of children soon spread to other neighboring countries and is now. The political idea of child soldiers started with Joseph Kony and now is international. Kony is having muchsuccess since there is little awareness of these invisible children and no one can stop him
- Since the use of child soldiers occurs mainly in developing countries where poverty is present- countries don’t have large amounts of money to spend on their military. So in order to get the best results of combat without spending money, they recruit children. As you can see in this picture, people live in huts. If the government can’t support a town, how can they support a military?
- Inuganda, you have to pay for education. Familes tend to be large and have many children. Thus having to pay a lot for school. Many familes cannot afford school and children do not attend. This means they have more free time. With all this free time children have more of an opportunity to be enlisted into theLRA. Additionally, with out school this creates less of a chance for employment so kids turningto war and violence as a way to pass their time and do something with their lives. It's not thatthey go and draft their selves, but if approached by a recruiter, they have no reason to say no.On the other hand, for those who can go to school, it becomes arecruitment location. The LRA is moving from residences to school and dominating the wholecommunity, making it impossible for children to escape combat.War itself it s great contributing facotr. War is first nature to them,they grow up with the though that war is the 'norm'. Since kids usually tend to copy what theirelders do, it's a world of monkey see, monkey do, they just mimic their violence.Ugandan children are brought up with a big family and many of thechildren's mothers are suffering from HIV. Eventually HIV positive patients will die andchildren will feel vulnerable and not know what do with their lives. This means kids spend lesstime with family and more time with friends, friends who are already part of the LRA.
- Like I mentioned earlier, since the knowledge of the miilitary use of children is more recenrlty becoming known- many child soldiers have gone undetected for a long time. This is because JoshephKony spread the idea and nations are catching on. Now many nations have gotton hooked on the idea of child soldiers. such areas as Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia and Sudan
- Economically, there are not many effects of child soldiers. Since soldiering occurs in third world countries, there is not much money to start with. For those countries that try to help and donate money, the government of the suffering country takes and does not use it where it is intended. Thousands of dollars go to waste when they could really be useful in the benefit of child soldiers, but instead the government abuses it.
- The act of killing is not an easy task even for an adult. So image the trauma a child endures while being involved in a battle? Once you get post traumatic streessdisordre you can’t get rid of it. Those whom PTSD has affected may experience flashbacks to their traumatic moment(s) in addition to nightmares and sleep loss, among others” (Oracle, ThinkQuest) This proves that child soldiers will carry the burden of warfare for their rest of their lives, and they will never be able to lead a normal life again. In addition to post-traumatic stress disorder, child experience adjustment disorder, personality disorder, eating disorders and depression.Also children are treated like sex slaves. They may be beaten and tortured. A side affect of the rapings are HIV and AIDs.. There is an HIV and AIDs eppidmeic throughout the world but Africa has the most conentrated amount. Child soldiers just adds to the numbers. Finally one the most importatn effects. The current child who are in the LRA and act as soldiers are going to the ones to raise the next generation of children. If they are disabled and/or shocked from their childhood, they are not going to properly raise their kids. This will create an endless cycle of internal strife among Ugandans.
