2. OVERVIEW
• When picking an ideal campsite, there are many
important factors that need to be considered:
• What are the hazards?
• What are the environmental factors?
• Is the selection suitable for the group?
• What are the pros and cons of the selection?
3. WHAT ARE THE HAZARDS?
• When picking an ideal campsite there are many
hazards to consider such as:
• Make sure all participates have access to a water
source
• Cliff edges are a potential hazard
• Weather (rain, wind)
• Animal habitats/territorial markings
• Widowers
4. WHAT ARE THE ENVIRONMENTAL
FACTORS?
• There are many environmental factors to consider:
• Usually there are groups of 4 or 5, so it’s important to
make sure that the selection is able to support the
“carrying capacity”.
• Make sure that the selection is a level area, for
comfortable sleeping conditions (no stumps, humps
etc.)
• Site selection should have close access to latrine,
cooking area and water source
• Put tarp under tent to prevent getting wet from
weather conditions
5. IS THE SELECTION SUITABLE?
This picture shows an ideal campsite selection because the tent is
put on a level area which makes for good sleeping conditions.
Another advantage would be the beautiful scenery. However, it is
an open area, which could be a hazard for weather conditions.
6. WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS?
• Pros
- Slight slope (drainage from tent)
- Ground isn’t fragile
- Close to areas for recreation
(pond for swimming, campfire)
- Nice scenery
- Cons
- Some tripping hazards
- Distance to latrine
7. WHERE IS NOT AN IDEAL CAMPSITE?
• Lots of vegetation
• Un-level ground
• Mossy area (wet)
• Having widowers
nearby
• Rocks could be a
tripping hazard
8. MY EXPERIENCE
“When I went on my first camping trip to Salmonier Line I was
worried about the sleeping conditions, if I would get wet, and
where to put my tent. Our group chose an area in the woods
that was relatively sheltered which prevented heavy
downpours. Our selection was very level therefore sleeping
conditions were comfortable. However, our area did collect
water, therefore the bottom of our tent began to get wet
because there was so drainage. There were some potential
hazards, such as when we tied the strings from the tent to the
trees, in the dark, they were almost impossible to see unless you
knew they were there, this could be dangerous in many
situations, therefore it is important to also have a light to see any
oncoming dangers such as string or even trees”
