This document compares and contrasts SOAP and REST web service architectures. It discusses that while SOAP enjoys broad industry support and extensibility, REST has advantages in being simpler, having better performance and scalability, and leveraging existing web infrastructure. Many large companies have adopted RESTful principles for their web services. In conclusion, REST describes the current web architecture and its principles can be applied to XML web services, though SOAP also has benefits.
