 Mazaeus is made Satrap of Babylonia under Alexander.
 The first Persian to receive such an important office.
 His surrender and humane treatment sets an example for other leaders.
 Susa is surrendered to Alexander by Abulites.

11. - Alexander either did not send scouts or they
were captured.
- Alexander‟s troops saw people who they
mistakenly thought were fleeing refugees.
- The pass narrows as it goes along.
- Ariobarzanes ambushes the lead of
Alexander‟s column forcing a retreat.
- Alexander‟s dead are left on the battlefield.
- Implausible tale resembling Ephilates at battle
of Thermopylae.

12.  Ariobarzanes survives the battle and flees to
Persepolis.
 He is turned away by the commander of the city who
already knew the outcome of the Battle of the Persian Gate
and was convinced Alexander was invincible.
 Alexander takes Persepolis after defeating a remnant of
the Persian Army left from Guagamela.

13. Alexander burns a number of
buildings in the Palace.
He also allows his men to loot the city.
Revenge for the burning of Athens in
480 BC.
When he returned to Persepolis later,
Alexander felt bad about the
destruction.
