Landforms

  • 2. —  I  will  learn  what  a  landform  is.     —  I  will  be  able  to  name,  explain  and  categorize   10  major  types  of  landforms.   —  I  will  practice  the  reading  strategy  of   summarizing  and  synthesizing  to  discover   and  learn  about  landforms.   —  I  will  learn  how  to  collect  information  by   taking  notes  and  drawing  pictures  of   landforms.    I  will  use  this  information  as  a   guide  when  designing  and  making  my  3D   physical  map.
  • 3. "   A   landform   is   any   natural   formation   of   rock   and   dirt,   found   on   Earth.   A  landform  can  be  as  large  as  a  mountain  range,  or  as  small  as  a  hill.   It   can   be   as   large   as   a   continent,   or   as   small   as   a   pond.     There   are   many   types   and   can   be   categorized   into   land   and   water   forms.     These   are  some  examples  of    natural  features  of  Earth’s  surface.
  • 4. —  One  type  of  a  map  is  a  physical  map  and  it  shows  what  the   surface   of   the   Earth   looks   like   by   demonstrating   different   land   and   water   forms.     When   we   learn   about   landforms   it   gives   us   an   understanding   on   how   to   read   these   maps   better.     We   can   also   can   make   inferences   about   different   places,  people  and  communities  based  on  these  maps.
  • 5.           Islands   are   bodies   of   land   completely   surrounded   by   water.   There  is  even  a  continent  that  is  an  island,  Australia.              Islands  are  formed  in  several  ways.  Many  islands  are  really  places   where   volcanoes   built   up   under   the   ocean   to   the   point   of   peaking   above  the  water.            The  lava  continues  to  pile  up  as  the  volcano   explodes  to  the  point  that  there  is  enough  solid  ground  to  form  an   island.            Some  islands    were  attached  to  a  continent  but  was  separated  by   erosion  of  the  land  between  the  two  land  masses.             Other   islands   are   coral   islands.   These   are   formed   when   the   skeletal  material  of  corals  piles  up  over  years  and  years.               There   are   two   types   of   islands   -‐   continental   and   oceanic.   Continental   islands   have   plant   and   animal   structures   like   the   continent   near   the   island.       Oceanic   islands   have   their   own   plant   and  animal  structure.
  • 7. —  Lakes  are  bodies  of  water   surrounded  by  land.  Lakes   generally  have  fresh  water,   while  oceans  and  seas  have  salt   water.  While  lakes  are  a  small   percentage  of  the  earth's  total   water,  they  are  important  for   our  economy  and   transportation.    A  lake  does  not   flow  along  a  certain  path  as  a   river  does.  Lakes  are  larger  than   ponds.     —  Lakes  get  bigger  and  smaller,   depending  on  many  factors.  Lakes   get  smaller  if  they  get  filled  up   Below   is   a   list   of   the   world's   biggest   lakes.   Even   though  some  are  called  seas,  they  are  actually  lakes!   with  salt  or  other  material.  They   Several   of   the   world's   largest   lakes   are   the   Great   also  dry  up  if  they  are  not   Lakes  of  North  America. replenished  with  water  through   rainfall.  Other  lakes  get  deeper   Lake   Continent   Area   and  bigger  as  rivers;  rainfall  and   Caspian Sea   Asia-Europe   143,244   underground  water  make  the  lake   Superior   North America   31,700   expand.     Victoria   Africa   26,828   Aral Sea   Asia   24,904   Huron   North America   23,000
