- We are going to take up where we left off in our last presentation where we did in effect a TAPs Primer. I’ll do a quick review of my introduction of what does a good TAP have to resolve to be considered a good TAP. This is the second of a trilogy of presentations where we will be presenting the many innovative features that Network Critical has introduced to the world of network access when it released the Smart Network Access System ™.
- Summary, This is Chris Johnson from OASYS – we specialize in network access and the monitoring tools for network management. I have a few items to highlight on what George covered and then I’ll tell you how to receive a Discount Voucher. I love to use Network Critical as the foundation when building out proposals for network monitoring systems because of the flexibility and reliability of the Smart Network Access system. It’s actually a matrix switch with all possible features you will ever need to access packets. As George said - Most data centers are designed today with monitoring taken into account and major ethernet segments will be installed with TAPs to access data between routers, switches, server farms and main frames. A TAP is the purest way to get at what is actually occurring between devices. If the segment is a copper RJ45 type connection the TAP is active and needs to be powered and you need to check a TAP’s specification for delay and failure issues – propagation – contact closure etc, if Fiber Optic, the TAP is passive and steals a percentage of the light to be passed to a monitoring tool. Split ratios range from 50/50 to 90/10 where 10% of the light is sent to the tool. Since we are actually TAPPING the TX and RX side of any full-duplex connection the output of a tap is two separate transmit signals – each at the possible full 1Gbps – this avoids the Span issues George mentioned where you may over book the single 1Gbps stream toward the span port in an ethernet switch and packets may be dropped, you won’t see them, and you won’t get notified that this is happening. Bad packets are also discarded to the span port and you won’t see them. Spanning re-times packets so your response time and delay measurements would skewed using this technique. So you see spanning may not be the best choice if you are monitoring something like Voice quality. Tools that connect to standard breakout TAPs are required to have at least 2 ports to accept the 2 ports from a TAP. Well, if your data center has 5 Tapped circuits that would create the requirement to have 10 directly attached tool ports. To reduce this we can engineer in Network Critical Smart Net Chassis which is a matrix with filtering and aggregation. This way we can take in multiple data streams and direct the packet types to the tools that want to collect specific types of packets. For instance a Wireshark may only want to collect VoiP packets, and the IDS may want to get everything. Now you can engineer a data access strategy to maximize the use of expensive tool ports and control how much data your tools get sent avoiding dropping any packets. In this example we could use the 1U system the configuration of 5 tapped circuits this would leave 7 ports for tool or possibly a few span connections. Other advantages to Network Critical include The modularity – not having to buy a fixed system – and you can buy just what you need now and expand later The flexibility in interfaces – buy SFP based TAP if you know you will change what you’re tapping or not sure of what future tools may have for interfaces.
