The Death of Slides.
A slow death.
“As of October 2004, Kodak no longer manufactures slide

to locate photo processors who will process slide film.”

What is Digital?
The digit is the pixel.
• Every picture is made of a finite number of pixels.
• Each pixel is like a bucket of color.
• More buckets of color means the more detail.
• Your monitor has 72 pixels per inch.
5. DigitalPortfolio
Resolution.
Pixels are finite.
• You cannot add information (pixels) to the original picture.
• Increasing size only pulls apart the original pixels.
6. DigitalPortfolio
More Resolution.
PPI = pixels per inch
DPI = dots per inch
• Printers use dots instead of pixels.
• These dots are CMYK.
• Common print resolutions are 150 dpi and 300 dpi.

Image Capture.
Point and click.
• Automatic mode is good for most cameras.
• Mega-Pixel refers to millions of pixels in total surface area.
• 2000 x 3500 = 7 million pixels (7 mega-pixels).

Format.
Pack it within a container.
Format is important because it determines where you
can use your image.
Examples: JPG | TIF | PDF | MOV | FLV
12. DigitalPortfolio
Compression Heavy Light
Making files “lighter.”
JPEG format makes the file size smaller by averaging the
colors of adjacent pixels.
13. DigitalPortfolio
Computer: JPEG @ 72 dpi
Final Destination. Email: Under 1MB file size
Print or Web?
Press: TIFF or PDF @ 300 dpi
• Before “saving,” plan the final destination for the image.
• Achieving good image quality AND small file size is the goal.
