5th. International Quality in Construction Summit 2013, Istanbul - Turkey (2013-12-05)
Presentation and forum discussion. What is required to ensure sustainability when realising the ambitious Turkish plan "the Urban Transformation" ?
“The functional and technical design and performance of buildings is the most forgotten contribution to sustainability”
Now we have the methodologies and tools to describe and quantify the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainability based on the functional and technical design solutions that meet present and future needs. Defining scenarios for the use of the building and for the processes for maintaining, repairing, adapting, etc. probably is one of the most important and difficult specifications in a true sustainable design. Especially where it concerns renovation and refurbishment. And as no one is able to commit on the use and details of the scenarios that will apply to the future, adaptability of the (renovated or new) building to meet future needs is probably one of the most important contributions to sustainability: adaptability of the building to future functional and technical needs.

• Sustainable new buildings?
• Sustainable renovation / renovated buildings ?
• Sustainable area / city / region / country .....?
• What is YOUR DEMAND for sustainability?
What is the sustainability performance you want to know?
What is the time horizon?
What are your scenarios for the future?
