Example 9: Tourism interview (1)
Piece of classwork/homework
MYP year: 2

    Criterion A B C D

    Level achieved - 5 - -

Background
Students had studied Italy as a more economically developed country after looking at indicators of
development. The Italy part of the unit was five weeks in length. During this time, students were introduced
to the idea that not all development is necessarily good for all aspects of a country. This idea was looked at
specifically through the “environment” area of interaction.

The students were shown interviews recorded by another class (not the same topic) and they evaluated them
on presentation only. The aim of this was to help them understand what a good interview may look like.

Students were given two periods of class time and their homework time to complete the task. The class time
was spent writing draft interview questions then sharing them with their peers and their teacher. The class
was a mixed-ability class with a number of students who had English as their second language.

All students were given a detailed assessment task sheet.

This task was assessed using criterion B.

Note 1: This task was also assessed on the oral presentation using criterion D, but for practical reasons this
could not be included here.

Note 2: All orthographical or content errors remain as per the original work.

Assessment
Criterion B: concepts
Maximum level: 10

    Achievement level Descriptor

5–6 Application of the concept of change, as described in the task sheet, is
appropriate but superficial. (Modified from the MYP Humanities guide for
                             year 2.)

This work achieved level 5 because the student:

• identifies the areas in which questions could be asked but does not use the task sheet to help guide
        him/her through the process
• shows some awareness of the concept but this is only superficial as he/she does not go through the
concept of change from past, present and possible future, as demanded in the task sheet
• displays some connections to the subject matter and takes on the role of a mayor trying to promote
        the town
• does not talk about the interaction between humans and their environment and how, when they interact,
        both change.

Areas of interaction
                               APPROACHES TO LEARNING
                               • Communicate your ideas effectively through
                                    an oral presentation.
                               • Use language appropriate to the audience.
                               • Identify relevant information and ideas.

opinions? impact on the natural environment?

Task
You are going to be either the interviewer or the interviewee for an interview on television about the
growth of tourism in the Valle d’Aosta.

The interviewee must be one of the following.

• Ski instructor
• 18-year-old school leaver
• 78-year-old grandparent
• Mayor of the local town
• Local school teacher
• 30-year-old parent of two children
In pairs, your task is to make up questions to find out the interviewee’s views on the valley, considering
three things: changes from the past, the present state and ideas for the future.

Your interview must show your understanding of the concept of cause and consequence, that is, what has
happened as a result of the actions that have taken place in the Valle d’Aosta, and show your understanding
that, as people interact with the environment, both change.

You must make sure that you ask questions and give responses appropriate to the role of the interviewee,
that is, the teenager will have a different view about the issue to the grandparent.

You must perform the interview in a style that you would see on a serious television channel. Therefore,
your audience is the type of people who watch those channels.

A basic outline would be as follows.

• Introduce both the interviewer and interviewee.
• Introduce the issue.
• Go through your prepared questions and responses.
• Summarize the issue and the interviewee’s views.
You must also hand in a written version of the interview.

Interview for TV on the Valle d’Aosta between the Mayor of Aosta (Anna Ellis) and a
      TV interviewer (Stephano Romano).

SR: Good evening Ms. Ellis and welcome to our show.

AE: Hello Stephano and welcome to Aosta.

SR: There has been a lot about Aosta in the news recently as it has become one of the places to be
      seen during the winter season.

AE: Yes we have tried very hard to try to get the tourists to come to our beautiful valley to enjoy our
famous ski fields and our wonderful hospitality.

SR: What do you see as being different about the valley as it was years ago?

AE: Well we have increased the number of hotel rooms in the valley and have managed to attract
some big hotel groups to develop resorts in this area. This is all good news to the people of the region.

SR: Do you think that the people of Aosta are happy with the changes?

AE: Well Stefano, I ask you who would not be happy with an increase in the amount of money they
can make every year? It is human nature isn’t it?

SR: Is that an idea held by all of the members of your community?

AE: Well there are some people that are against some of the changes, but only a few and they will be
fine once they see the great new facilities that the new investments will bring about. There are even
plans for a multiplex, I bet you didn’t know that!

SR: How has the Valley changed in the last 20 years?

AE: There have been a few changes but I can assure you that they have all been for the better, we
have amenities here now that people could only dream of 20 years ago. No one in the area can argue
      with that.

SR: So everything is looking bright for the Valle d’Aosta for the next few years?

AE: Don’t you worry about that young man we have a bright future ahead of us. You’d better go and
      buy some shades!

SR: Well thank you and good luck Ms. Mayor.

AE: Same to you Stephano, now why don’t you come a have a drink at the new Irish bar we have!

  • 1. Assessed student work Example 9: Tourism interview (1) Piece of classwork/homework MYP year: 2 Criterion A B C D Level achieved - 5 - - Background Students had studied Italy as a more economically developed country after looking at indicators of development. The Italy part of the unit was five weeks in length. During this time, students were introduced to the idea that not all development is necessarily good for all aspects of a country. This idea was looked at specifically through the “environment” area of interaction. The students were shown interviews recorded by another class (not the same topic) and they evaluated them on presentation only. The aim of this was to help them understand what a good interview may look like. Students were given two periods of class time and their homework time to complete the task. The class time was spent writing draft interview questions then sharing them with their peers and their teacher. The class was a mixed-ability class with a number of students who had English as their second language. All students were given a detailed assessment task sheet. This task was assessed using criterion B. Note 1: This task was also assessed on the oral presentation using criterion D, but for practical reasons this could not be included here. Note 2: All orthographical or content errors remain as per the original work. Assessment Criterion B: concepts Maximum level: 10 Achievement level Descriptor 5–6 Application of the concept of change, as described in the task sheet, is appropriate but superficial. (Modified from the MYP Humanities guide for year 2.) This work achieved level 5 because the student: • identifies the areas in which questions could be asked but does not use the task sheet to help guide him/her through the process • shows some awareness of the concept but this is only superficial as he/she does not go through the concept of change from past, present and possible future, as demanded in the task sheet • displays some connections to the subject matter and takes on the role of a mayor trying to promote the town • does not talk about the interaction between humans and their environment and how, when they interact, both change. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2005 121

Task You are going to be either the interviewer or the interviewee for an interview on television about the growth of tourism in the Valle d’Aosta. The interviewee must be one of the following. • Ski instructor • 18-year-old school leaver • 78-year-old grandparent • Mayor of the local town • Local school teacher • 30-year-old parent of two children In pairs, your task is to make up questions to find out the interviewee’s views on the valley, considering three things: changes from the past, the present state and ideas for the future. Your interview must show your understanding of the concept of cause and consequence, that is, what has happened as a result of the actions that have taken place in the Valle d’Aosta, and show your understanding that, as people interact with the environment, both change. You must make sure that you ask questions and give responses appropriate to the role of the interviewee, that is, the teenager will have a different view about the issue to the grandparent. You must perform the interview in a style that you would see on a serious television channel. Therefore, your audience is the type of people who watch those channels. A basic outline would be as follows. • Introduce both the interviewer and interviewee. • Introduce the issue. • Go through your prepared questions and responses. • Summarize the issue and the interviewee’s views. You must also hand in a written version of the interview. 122 © International Baccalaureate Organization 2005

  • 4. Assessed student work Student work Interview for TV on the Valle d’Aosta between the Mayor of Aosta (Anna Ellis) and a TV interviewer (Stephano Romano). SR: Good evening Ms. Ellis and welcome to our show. AE: Hello Stephano and welcome to Aosta. SR: There has been a lot about Aosta in the news recently as it has become one of the places to be seen during the winter season. AE: Yes we have tried very hard to try to get the tourists to come to our beautiful valley to enjoy our famous ski fields and our wonderful hospitality. SR: What do you see as being different about the valley as it was years ago? AE: Well we have increased the number of hotel rooms in the valley and have managed to attract some big hotel groups to develop resorts in this area. This is all good news to the people of the region. SR: Do you think that the people of Aosta are happy with the changes? AE: Well Stefano, I ask you who would not be happy with an increase in the amount of money they can make every year? It is human nature isn’t it? SR: Is that an idea held by all of the members of your community? AE: Well there are some people that are against some of the changes, but only a few and they will be fine once they see the great new facilities that the new investments will bring about. There are even plans for a multiplex, I bet you didn’t know that! SR: How has the Valley changed in the last 20 years? AE: There have been a few changes but I can assure you that they have all been for the better, we have amenities here now that people could only dream of 20 years ago. No one in the area can argue with that. SR: So everything is looking bright for the Valle d’Aosta for the next few years? AE: Don’t you worry about that young man we have a bright future ahead of us. You’d better go and buy some shades! SR: Well thank you and good luck Ms. Mayor. AE: Same to you Stephano, now why don’t you come a have a drink at the new Irish bar we have! 124 © International Baccalaureate Organization 2005
