Parental stress is present in homes with IPV and this stress creates an unhealthy environment where the children are not cared for as they should be and therefore do not develop appropriately situations (Goddard & Bedi, 2009; Huth-Bocks & Hughes, 2007; Mbilinyi, Edleson, Hageneister & Beeman, 2007; Moylan, Herrenkohl, Sousa, Tajima, Herrenkohl & Russo, 2009; Owen, Thompson, Shaffer, Jackson & Kaslow, 2009; van de Bosse & McGinn, 2009).
Slide 4
Children tend to model their parents. This modeling can lead the child to display symptoms of depression and/or anger (Adler, Rosenfeld & Proctor, 2009). Furthermore, adaptability is often an issue in these household. When adaptability is too high the family is chaotic. In a chaotic family there are often violent shifts in the family dynamics. When adaptability is too low a rigid family develops and there is one leader and his or her rules are never to be broken (Adler et al., 2009).
Slides 5, 6 and 7
There are 3 main areas where children who were present for IPV behaved outside the norm for other children their age. These areas are internalizing behaviors, externalizing behaviors and social adaption (Glicken, 2004; Goddard & Bedi, 2009; Kashani & Allan, 1998). These will be discussed in slides 5, 6 and 7.
Slide 11
While IPV exposure does not appear to have a strong correlation with internalizing and externalizing behaviors, the environment which surrounds IPV would not be present of there was no violence so the two are related (Goddard & Bedi, 2009; Mbilinyi et al., 2007; Moylan et al., 2009; Huth-Bocks & Hughes, 2007; Owen et al. , 2009). It remains important to watch for warning signs so that early interventions can be made within the family.
References
Adler, R.B., Rosenfeld, L.B. & Proctor, R.F. (2007).
