American Foreign Policy
             Goals
 Preserve national security and promote a safe global
  environment

 Promote world peace, maintain a balance of powers, and
  work with other countries to solve international problems

 Promote democratic values, human rights especially with
  countries with political choice and the rule of law

 Further foreign trade, global economic cooperation and
  continue involvement in international organizations
Who makes Foreign Policy??
 President is the commander and chief, congress is the only
  body who can declare war.

 President sets the mood and agenda for policy making
 Department of State - Primary duty is the security of the
  nation

 Diplomats - watchdog in foreign countries. Try to solve
  issues before they become to large

 Ambassadors - protect U.S. interests and citizens in foreign
  countries.
 National Security Council - consists of the president,
  vice president, secretary of state, and the secretary of
  defense.

 The Central Intelligence Agency - gather and analyze
  information

 Department of Defense - specializes on defense policy.
  Headquarters is the Pentagon. The Joint Chiefs of Staff
  (5 members) advise the president directly.
 Defense Policies
 Covert Operations - secret operations to prevent full
  scale military involvement

 Political Coercion - Break ties with a country, boycotts,
  restrict tourism

 Military Intervention- Most interventions are brief and
  are a last resort

 War...... We all know what that means!
