2. Industry: Early
Revolution
1708-1815
The Industrial Revolution began in Britain
because, unlike most of Europe, it wasn’t
ravaged by war. It became known as the
workshop of the world. By 1815, Britain’s
output of coal, textiles, and metals was equal
to the rest of Europe. Workers in the factories
weren’t treated well, and many children died. A
new class of rich industrialists, managers, and
professionals gradually evolved. London
became the financial capital of the world.

5. India in Transition:
1707-1835
In 1707, the Mogul Emperor Aurangzeb died and the empire
collapsed. India began a century of wars for power bet ween
different groups who wanted to take control.
From about 1740-1762, many groups had a brief time in power.
Unfortunately, these groups forgot about British and French
influence. At first these groups shared rule, but in 1752 a British
general (Robert Clive) defeated the French. After that, through
1761, war bet ween the French and British began. In 1761,
Britain won control over India.
From 1707-1858, India went through a period of war and
upheaval followed by a takeover by the British. India was not
united, but it was under Britain control.

8. Important Points
Austria, Prussia, Russia, and France each wanted to control Europe.
None of the European power was strong enough to win on its own, so
they made alliances. There was an uneasy balance of power.
At first it seemed as if the Austrian and French would win. Then
British joined with the Prussians and restored the balance of power.
What ended the war wasn’t the Russians backing out or an important
leader for the British, William Pitt, forced to resign. The expense and
destruction it brought to all sides stopped the seven year long war.
Ministers and diplomats now controlled governments and many
countries preferred to talk rather than make war. In the Treaty of
Paris in 1763, it was decided that Britain would get French lands in
Canada and India and the Prussians would keep the rich province of
Silesia.
9. North America
1675-1791
French and British had been fighting for many years because they
wanted to control North America.
Native Americans had fought on both sides, hoping to receive
support in disputes from colonists in return. Sadly, the Native
Americans gradually lost out to the settlers who didn’t respect
them and were forced out of their lands.
After the American Revolution, many colonists loyal to the crown
but with strong feelings about freedom moved to Canada. In
1791, the British Constitutional Act split Canada bet ween the
French and the British. The French were also granted continued
freedom in religion.
