An independent UK film distribution company like Dogwoof would be best suited to distribute our new psychological thriller film called "The Obsession". As a low-budget British film that focuses on gritty urban scenes and doesn't include Hollywood-style stereotypes of the UK, it would appeal more to an independent distributor and UK audiences rather than a major company. Releasing it around Halloween and promoting it through social media could help it find an audience. While self-distribution would retain full control, the legal and sales expertise of a distributor would help maximize profits.
Beyond the EU: DORA and NIS 2 Directive's Global Impact
Film Distribution Media AS 2013
1. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT
DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND
WHY?
2. WHAT IS A FILM DISTRIBUTER
A film distributor gets a film out there and makes strategically thought out plans on how to get
the audience to hear about it and want to go and see the film. They may have different
companies within which they can work with or the may be independent and have to use the
help of other companies. They work to get trailers, posters and other types of marketing out
there to create a buzz.
If want a film distribution company to take on our film then we could take our film to a film
festival and then if anyone is interested we can make deals and hopefully end up making a
profit in the end.
3. THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF
DISTRIBUTION COMPANIES:
MAJOR OR INDEPENDENT

4. OUR FILM “THE OBSESSION”
Our film is a psychological thriller and is more likely to appeal to Independent companies like
Dogwoof as a lot of the films that they have distributed re of a similar genre. The films that we
looked at when coming up with the plot of our films were Shutter Island, Se7en and Silence of
the lambs. Se7en and Silence of the lambs came from independent distributers which tells us
that our film is more likely to appeal to an independent film company. Although we did look at
Shutter Island as it was of a similar genre it was still distributed by a major distribution
conglomerate due to the fact that it had award winning well-known actors in it such as
Leonardo Di Caprio. 20 th Century fox distributes action blockbusters and family films as well
as many other but they are less likely to be interested in a psychological thriller that was
created on a low budget that is unlike their own.
5. “THE OBSESSION”
THE FILMS APPEAL
Our film is more likely to appeal to a UK audience as it shows more of a gritty urban Britain
than most other countries would be used to. In a lot of Hollywood Blockbusters Britain is
shown as quite posh and an idyllic place to be so films that show the other side of Britain
which is not something that would appeal to many people who live outside of the UK as it isn’t
relatable.
As we chose not to have any stereotypical representations of the UK it means that when
distributing our film we know that it will be a lot harder to make our film a hit in other countries
such as America.
6. MARKETING STRATEGIES
Film distributers have to think abut when they release the film and when it would
make the most profit. Our film would be good to be release at Halloween as this is a
time when a lot of people chose to watch scary films and this is what our
Psychological thriller would be classed as.
Our film is low budget so we wouldn’t be able to afford to have a trailer shown on TV
but we can make one that our distribution company could spread through social
network sites such as Facebook or YouTube. To try and make our trailer go viral we
will send it to pages on sites such as Facebook that attract a similar demographic
they are therefore they’re more likely to see it and share it with their friends. We
could also create posters that could be put up in places that would apply to our
target audience.
7. SELF DISTRIBUTION
As an independent film company we may also want to try and distribute it ourselves. These are the
pro’s and con’s outlined by the BBC:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/filmmaking/guide/distribution/distribution
•
Advantages to self-distribution
•
You can retain full control and rights over your film, giving you the choice over where your film is shown.
•
You don't have to give a cut of the money made from any sales of your film to a distributor.
•
Disadvantages to self-distribution
•
It can be a full-time job in itself as it can be very time consuming chasing buyers and sales and filling in paperwork.
•
It may limit your options for sales as distributors have established relationships with buyers and many buyers may only be in terested in
packages of films.
•
You need to be very legally savvy and make sure you're not signing away rights to your film that'll prevent you from showing it
elsewhere.
Looking at these Pro’s and Con’s it would be wiser to find a distribution company to help us to
distribute it as we don’t want to lose any money through legal problems or losing buyers which is
something that they will do instead.
