MOBILE OPRERATING
SYSTEMS
1
Much like the Linux or Windows operating system controls
your desktop or laptop computer, a mobile operating system
is the software platform on top of which other programs can
run on mobile devices.
Which is responsible for determining the functions and
features available on your device, such as thumbwheel,
keyboards, WAP, synchronization with applications, email,
text messaging and more
2
An operating system (OS) is an interface between
hardware and user, It manages the hardware and
software resources of the system.
The operating system that controls mobile device is called
Mobile OS. They are simple and deal with the wireless
versions of broadband and local connectivity, mobile
multimedia formats and different input methods etc.
A layer structure showing where
operating system is located
3
There are many mobile operating systems. The
followings demonstrate the most important ones:
Java ME Platform
Symbian OS
Linux OS
Windows Mobile OS
iPhone OS
Plam OS
Google Android Platform 4
• J2ME platform is a set of technologies,
specifications and libraries developed
for small devices like mobile phones,
pagers, and personal organizers.
• Java ME was designed by Sun
Microsystems. It is licensed under GNU
General Public License.
5
• Symbian OS is 32 bit.
• It is a multitasking operating system and
very less dependence on peripherals.
• Access to these services and resources is
coordinated through a client-server framework.
• User libraries include networking,
communication, I/O interfaces and etc.
6
• It is known as Embedded Linux which is used in
embedded computer systems such as mobile
phones, Personal Digital Assistants, media players
and other consumer devices.
• In spite of Linux operating system designed for
Servers and desktops, the Embedded Linux is
designed for devices which have relatively
limited resources such as small size of RAM,
storage, screen, limited power and etc.
7
 Windows Mobile is a compact operating system .
 designed for mobile devices and based on
Microsoft Win32.
 It is run on Pocket PCs, Smartphone’s and
Portable media centers.
 It provides ultimate interoperability. Users with various
requirements are able to manipulate their data.
8
 iPhone OS is a mobile operating system developed by Apple
Inc.
 It is the default OS of iPhone, iPod Touch and the upcoming
iPad.
 The user interface of iPhone OS is based on multi-touch
gestures.
Some of the Features of iPhone OS
 Multi-touch User interface
 POP/IMAP/SMTP e-mail
 Background Processing
Software development
 Language: Objective C
 IDE: XCode
 OS: Mac OS X Leopard or later
9
10
•Palm OS is a proprietary mobile operating system,
designed in 1996 by Palm Computing, Inc.
•Palm OS is designed for ease of use with a touch screen-
based graphical user interface.
Some of the Key Features of Palm OS
• Simple, Multi-tasking environment
• Handwriting recognition input system
• TCP/IP network access
Software development
• Language: C/C++
• IDEs: CodeWarrior Development Studio, PRC-tools
based gcc.

 Android is an operating system and software platform
for mobile devices that uses a modified version of the
Linux.
 It was initially developed by Android Inc.- a firm later
purchased by Google.
 Android has seen a number of updates since its original
release: 1.0(Relese 1), 1.5(CupCake), 1.6(Donut),
2.0(Eclair) and 2.1(Flan), 2.2 (Froyo),
2.3 (Gingerbread),3.0 (Honeycomb),4.0 (Ice
Cream Sandwich), 4.1(Jelly Bean), and KitKat
(4.4).
12
Some of the Features of Android
OS
 Android is open and Free
 Uses proven technologies like
Java, XML and Linux
 Voice Typing For All Text Fields.
 Multi Tasking.
Software development
 Language: Java
 Android has two debuggers ADB
(Android Debug Bridge) and
DDMS (Dalvik Debug Monitor
Server)
13
Android from Google Inc. has the largest sales in most markets
worldwide., 78.4%, iOS holds the second place , 8.16%,
Windows Mobile from Microsoft, 3.2%, Others including Palm
and Linux hold 0.9% of 2013 market sales.
