2. Commission Objectives To identify what policy actions are needed to help the world achieve sustainable agriculture What are the main challenges confronting agriculture as a result of climate change? What are the costs of action relative to inaction? What approaches to agricultural development should be scaled up to meet the growing demand for food? What are the main changes and policy actions needed to promote these more sustainable approaches? Commission will answer these from existing evidence.

3. Why a new Commission? Currently a “mixed bag” of messages. This confusion risks inaction or inappropriate actions. The Commission will add value by producing a clear set of findings on what we need to do “meta analysis”

4. How will the findings be used? Target climate change, agriculture and sustainability policy processes: UNFCCC negotiations and COP17 in South Africa Rio+20 Earth Summit in Brazil in 2012 Global Panel on Sustainability Committee on World Food Security Regional and national policies (e.g. CAADP & CAP)

5. Commission Plan Appoint up to nine scientists as Commissioners Start early 2011 to complete work by December 2011 Commissioners will work independently Expect them to meet physically twice with additional virtual meetings Technical Secretariat will support the Commission Set up contact points with other major initiatives on agriculture and climate change to add value
