1A HOLINESS HAS TO DO WITH MY HEART
The heart of motivation The seat of passion the spring of all thought
processes and conscience.
Holiness is always the saved sinner's response of gratitude for grace received.
2A HOLINESS HAS TO DO WITH MY TEMPERAMENT
The factors that make specific ways of reacting and behaving natural to me.
Its what inclines me to transact with my enviroment (situations , things, people.
Its the raw material out of which temperament is formed..
Character is what we do with our temperament. Personality is the final
produce.
3A HOLINESS HAS TO DO WITH MY HUMANNES
Jesus model for us human goodness. What is that? Human live lived as God
intened. Where the human person is completely united in God honoring and nature
fulfilling way.
It is the reverse of secular humanism.
Genuine holiness is genuine Christ-likeness , and genuine Christ likeness is
genuine humanness, the only genuine humanness there is.
Love in the service of the Lord Jesus Christ and others
Humility and meekness under the Divine hand
Integrity of behavior expressing interrogation of character
Wisdom with faithfulness

2. Sorrow at people's sin
Joy at the Father's goodness
Single mindedness in seeking to please the Father, morning, noon and
night
Christians are meant to become human as Jesus was human. Called to imitate the
character of Christ.
4A HOLINESS HAS TO DO WITH MY RELATIONSHIPS
Holiness is not isolationism, but relationship. Not detached from ordinary
human involvement.
Its not becoming materialistic, extravagant or a grabber and empire
builder,
But must operate as a servant of God in the world,
HOLINESS IS A NUMBER OF THINGS:
• Both outward and inward aspect
• A matter of both action and motivation
• Conduct and character
• Divine grace and human effort
• Obedience and creativity
• Submission and imitative
• Conservation to God and commitment to people
• Self discipline and self giving
• Righteousness and love
• A matter of Spirit-led keeping
• A walk, of conduct of life
• In the Spirit that displays the fruit of the Spirit
• It is a matter of seeking to imitate Jesus way of behaving
• It is a matter of patient, persistent unrighteousness
• Taking God's side against sin in our own lives and in lives of others.
• Of worshiping God in the Spirit as one serves Him in the world.
• Single-mindedness, wholehearted
• Free and glad concentration on the business of pleasing God

3. • It is the distinctive form and so to speak, flavor of a live set apart from God
that is now being inwardly renewed by His power.
• Holiness is thus the demonstration of faith, working by love.
• Therefore it is whole supernatural in the sense of being God's gracious
achievement within us, and wholly natural in the sense of being our own
true humanness.
How then are we to be holy? Peter gives us several directives.
• We are to be holy in all our conduct. Holiness is not to be compartmentalized
into certain “religious” areas of our life. Holiness is a way of life that affects
everything we do. Holiness is a lifestyle, rather than mere conformity to a list
of rules.
• We are to be holy by not being conformed to our former lusts. Holiness is a
lifestyle which differs dramatically from our manner of life before we were
saved . Leviticus 18:1-8. Romans 123:1-2; Romans 1:21-25; Romans 6:16;
Ephesians 4:17-24, 2 Peter 2:12-13; I Corinthians 9:24-27;
• We are to be holy by imitating God. We are to be holy because God is holy (see
above). We are also to be holy as God is holy. As Jesus once put it,“Therefore you
are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48). I John 3:1-
12
• We are to be holy by obeying God’s Word. Romans 8:1-4; I Corinthians 2:6-16
Let me try to draw a picture of Biblical holiness

“Without holiness, no man shall see the Lord!” Hebrews 12:14
Are we holy? Shall we see the Lord?
In this hurrying, bustling world–let us stand still for a few minutes and
consider the matter of holiness. It is a solemn thing to hear the Word of God
saying, “Without holiness, no man shall see the Lord!”A man may go great
lengths in religionand yet never reach true holiness.

4. What is true practical holiness?
It is not knowledge–Balaam had that.
It is not great profession–Judas Iscariot had that.
It is not doing many things–Herod had that.
It is not zeal for certain matters in religion–Jehu had that.
It is not morality and outward respectability of conduct–the rich young ruler
had that.
It is not taking pleasure in hearing preachers–the Jews in Ezekiel’s time had
that.
It is not keeping company with godly people–Joab and Gehazi and Demas had
that.
Yet none of these were holy people! These things alone, are not holiness. A
man may have any one of them–and yet never see the Lord!
Let me try to draw a picture of Biblical holiness, that we may see it clearly
before the eyes of our minds.
1. Holiness is the habit of being of one mind with God, according as we find
His mind described in Scripture.
2. A holy man will endeavor to shun every known sin, and to keep every
known commandment.
3. A holy man will strive to be like our Lord Jesus Christ.
4. A holy man will follow after meekness, patience, gentleness, patience, kind
tempers, and government of his tongue.
5. A holy man will follow after temperance and self-denial.
6. A holy man will follow after love and brotherly kindness.
7. A holy man will follow after a spirit of mercy and benevolence towards
others.
8. A holy man will follow after purity of heart.
9. A holy man will follow after the fear of God.
10. A holy man will follow after humility.
11. A holy man will follow after faithfulness in all the duties and relations in
life.
12. Last–but not least, a holy man will follow after spiritual-mindedness.

5. HOLINESS: THE DIVINE IMPERATIVE
1 .I suspect that this valley has yet to see what God can do through a body of
believers fully yielded to Him.
2 .If we desire to be a church that is effective, effusive, and infectious for Christ,
we must be a people of holiness.
We can devise all kinds of games, gimmicks, and gadgets to attract people, but
God wants us to
be wholly like him and holy like Him.
3. Do you ever wonder why we so often limp along spiritually, licking our wounds
and longing for
victory? Why we so often stagnate or settle for mediocrity in the things of Christ?
Perhaps it’s because we’ve lost our PASSION FOR HOLINESS. And it’s that passion I
want to
call us to.
4. Dr. J. Sidlow Baxter comments,
“No subject which ever engages the thought of Christian believers can be more
sacredly commanding than that of our personal holiness, by which I mean an in
wrought holiness of heart and life. Beyond contradiction, this is our ‘priority-
number-one’ concern. Admittedly, one would not infer so from the general
appearance of things just now, but it is so, if the New Testament is true.
“Although this deeper work of the Holy Spirit in the consecrated believer seems little
expounded in the average church today, with the unhappy consequence that
comparatively few Christians seem to know much about it in experience, it still remains
true that this call to holiness is the first call of the New Testament to all Christians. For
the moment, let just one text of Scripture represent the many to us: Ephesians 1:4,
staggering in its mystery and immensity
5.Reasons for the decline in holiness preaching and living:
a. Undermining of biblical authority We’ll never aspire to a holy standard of
living without an authoritative base.
b. The standard seems too high: Some people, even some preachers, are
intimidated to speak of it, lest they be viewed as hypocrites. Granted, it is
convicting to preach such a high standard of holiness, but it is God’s standard and
we must proclaim nothing less.
c. Absence of role models

6. We need truly godly leaders to emulate holiness and to hold us accountable.
Ungodly or complacent spiritual leaders confuse the issue.
d. Our current self-centered/man-centered theology:
Many professing Christians are so focused on what they think God should
give them that they’ve apparently lost sight of what He wants to make
them. They’ve exchanged what they can becomefor what they can get.
Like the prophet Isaiah, they need a fresh vision of God’s holiness (Isaiah

e. Theological tradition
Currently there is a much debate over the “Lordship Salvation” issue (i.e., does
salvation require yielding to Christ’s lordship, or must we simply receive Him as
our Savior?).Many people have so separated justification from sanctification that
they believe it is possible to be a true believer and never manifest the fruit of
repentance. However, Scripture has much to say to the contrary.
CULTIVATING HOLINESS

THE PURPOSE OF IS THAT SALVATION WILL PRODUCE HOLINESS IN US
1A WHAT IS SALVATION:
1B Salvation means being rescued from jeopardy and misery, so that one is
now safe. Exodus 52:2; Jonah 2:9 and Psalms 116:6
2B Salvation from sin and its consequences.
3B Salvation has three tenses
1C from sin's guilt (the past aspect, exposure to penalty is gone)

3C from its presence (the future aspect: sin will one day be no more than a
bad memory.)
4B Christians have been saved from:
1C from the wrath of God (Romans 5:9; 1 Thess. 1:10
2C from eternal death: Romans 6:21 and 23
3C from the dominion of sin: Romans 6:14, 18
4C from the life of fear: Romans 8:15
5C from controlling habits of ungodliness and immorality: Titus 2:12
Christians will one day be fully conformed to Jesus in body and moral character:
Philippians 3:20 and I John 3:2.
5B While we live in joyful favor with God, we serve out of a gratitude of
worship, there is this indwelling sin.But through the energy of the Holy Spirit we
gain victory: Romans 5:12; 12:1; 8:14; Galatians 5:16.Romans 7:24 and
8:23.
6B The Desire For Holiness:
For the moment the ability for holiness exceeds our ability. God's does give
us salvation,
and we are into our salvation, but salvation is not yet fully into us. We have a
taste, but the
full effect is yet future.
7B Salvation Gives Us The Following
1C Forgiveness, justification, reconciliation, pardon, acceptance, standing,
fellowship. John
5:24 and Romans 8:32-39.
2C Salvation also put us in Christ: called "union with Christ.". Romans
5:12-19 Ephesians 4:20-24 and Colossians 1:27; 5:4.
3C Our life as a moral person is supernaturalized by the Holy Spirit which
makes the presence of Christ "to us", and reproduces in us the what God's
gives us:
1D The desires, aims, attitudes, and behavior patterns that we see in
Jesus Christ.
2A THE PURPOSE OF OUR SALVATION: BECAUSE OF SIN

2B The Definition of Sin
1C Any want of conformity unto, or transgression of, the law of God.
2C It is an energy, an obsession, an allergic reaction to God's law, an
irrational anti-God
syndrome.
3C Our very nature is driven toward self-gratification.
4C Here is sin in action: it is nonconformity to God in several
ways:
1E rebellion against God.
2E transgression of the bounds God's sets for us.
3E missing the mark God has told us to aim at.
4E defiling oneself in the sight of God
5C Sin: The mind of sinful man is death. its hostile to God, It do not submit
to God's law,
can the mind do so. Romans 8:6-8.
3B The Bible is like a mirror for self-knowledge, that is the Bible shows us ourselves
as we are.
4B "No smokescreen of religioustiy can save us from sin."
5B Do all people know that they are sinners? Yes and No. All people know where
are not they obey God or reject His ways. And as result they don't believe they
are sinners. All people have a certain amount of knowledge of God, thus they are
without excuse: Romans 1:18.
3A GOD'S PLAN FOR SALVATION: (Set the stage for holiness.)

9. 1B How did God bring me into salvation that I now enjoy? I Thessalonian 1:4
Well, we see this fleshed out in the life of Jesus Christ. I Timothy 2:56
2B Jesus Christ is the model for holiness: Mark 10:45, Matthew 26:28 and I
Timothy 2:5
3B Through the work of the Holy Spirit's work in people's heart, once the
message that invites them to faith in Christ has gotten in their heads, they become
certain that Jesus Christ is act.
One way or another, out of changed hearts there issues a commitment
to live a changed live.
This new life: A real and radical alteration of our personal being.
We enjoy a new status:
(1)Justified: (2) Adopted: and (4) Cleansed: (5) Put “In Christ”.

The New behavior patterns:

5A GOD'S PURPOSE
Why would God saved a person?

6A GOD'S SAVING PLAN
What will God go on to do, here and hereafter, in order to finish what
He has and complete the salvation He has in store for me?
Hebrews 4:13; John 1:5; 4:8,16
The divine agenda for the rest of my life on earth is my SANCTIFICATION
I have been raised from spiritual death and born again in Christ so that I might be
changed into His moral likeness:
Ephesians 4:22-24, Colossians 3:9-10.
To increasing conformity to the image of Christ.

WHAT IS HOLINESS?
1B Holiness is the habit of been of one mind with God.
2B A holy believer will strive to stay away from as much as possible sinful
behavior.
3B A holy believer will desire to be as much like Jesus as possible.
4B A holy believer will follow after meekness, longsufferinging, gentleness,
patience, watch his tongue, and be kind in his temperment.
HOLINESS HAS TO DO WITH THE HEART!
1B Process of holiness starts with my salvation. From my inner life, from the
seat of my passion, that which driven from within, my aim, passion, desire,
longing, aspiration, goal, and drives me to PLEASE THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.
2B Worship starts with praise, worship and honoring and exalting God..
WHAT SHOULD I LEARN FROM THIS PROCESS OF SALVATION
1B To be awestruck at the greatness of my God, my Creation, by Lord and
Savior.
2B To be grateful for the mercy of my salvation: We are to give thanks always.
3B To know that I can never do anything to earn, increase, or extend God's
favor or to try to justify what God is doing in my life.
4B To know that from eternity God Himself has redeemed me from sin through
the cross.
5B Out of what we learn from our salvation should be a sense of gratitude and
is expressed in thanksgiving and should spontaneously break out as the
ruling passion of my life.

12. WHAT HAVE WE (AND ARE) COVERED THUS FAR IN THIS SERIES ON
HOLINESS
1B That holiness is every Christian's calling. It's not a osption, but a
requirement.
2B That holiness is basically a relationship with God: I Corinthians 6:19-20
and Ephesians 4:30
3B That holiness of life is not precisely a human achievement, however much is
demanded of human effort. It is the work of the Holy Spirit. Self-reliance is not the
way of holiness.
4B Holiness involves two related but distinct aspects of Christian experience
1C Spirituality: Fellowship with God: prayer; worship; self-discipline;
maintaining purity; peace; patience of heart; seeking and serving God.
2C Ethics: The determining to do God's revealed will, to develop and
display those characteristic and qualities that reflect God's image .
5B Holiness is the imitation of Christ in His virtures of love to Christ and
humanity. Trust Him. Accept His will. Submit to His providience, Zeal for His honor
and glory.
1C 'I WANT TO BE LIKE JESUS IN MY HEART."
6B That personal holiness is personal and wholeness. Single-mindness, Jesus-
likeness.
1C Development of the mastery over our lives to the glory of God is ever
going. Failure does not stop us, we learn to handle our failures. We live in
hope, we travel this life in confidence of arriving at the eternal destination
that has been design by God.
HOW DO WE LIVE THIS HOLY LIFE THAT IS A GIFT FROM GOD?
1B For absolutely everything that we have now and that we have ever had,
including even our very being—absolutely everything is a gift of God
2B First thing in the morning turn first of all to the Lord God with some heartfelt
appeal, such as “Glory to Thee, O Lord! Glory to Thee, O All-Merciful One!”
We would be unworthy of the name of Christian if, waking from sleep, we were
to open only our physical eyes, and not our spiritual ones, and were to think
first of the earth and of earthly things, and not of the Lord God.
3B What do we know about ourselves after our gift of salvation?
1C Justified through faith; in Christ; adopted into God's royal family;

13. united to Christ; regenerated; sealed; indwelt by the Holy Spirit;
2C Sanctify, changed into Christ's likeness, energized by the Spirit for
love and obedience.
3C Called to cooperate with what our God is doing in our lives
HOW ARE WE TO "WORK OUT" OUR SALVATION?
1B Two ways we are not to work out our salvation:
1C Pharisaism: Outward actions with self serving motives.
2C Antinomianism: Love and liberty with out doing God's law.
2B In light of the fact that all Christians are more vulnerable to temptations than
they believe, how are we to be holy in our living:?
1C There are no two Christians that have the saw way of living the
Christian life.
2C I am not sure there is one right spiritual directory for the spiritual life.
3C It is a task for sure
THE JOURNEY TO LIVING OUT WHAT IS ALREADY IN US
1B Holiness as viewed from the redirecting of desire:
1C A life of holiness is a life of prayer
1D Prayer is a struggle for Christians
2D Satan doesn't mind if we show on the outside our good
behavior, if on the inside, our hearts are crooked before
God, proud self absoration, and self indulgence in our
fantasies and motivies.
2C A life of struggle: Why?
1D God allows stugggle so that we may be toughened, matured,
and anchored in Him more deeply, through the experience of
fighting back into His strenght. Ephesians 6:10-20
2C DESIRING GOD:
1C This is an often perplexing problem with Christians!
2C Dryness of spirit, where the sense of Christ is distance.
1D Often to induce a new depth of humble, hopeful
opennes to Himself. Philippians 3:7-10 an Psalms 73:25-36
First, you must desire to live a life that will please the Lord. You have
the .... I am so grateful to the Almighty God for the gift of the Holy
Spirit.
Second, be willing to surrender your life totally and irrevocably to our
Lord Jesus Christ. Paul admonishes in Romans 12:1, 2: "I urge you,
brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living
sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God -- which is your spiritual worship.

14. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to
test and approve what God's will is -- his good, pleasing and perfect
will."
Third, confess every known sin which the Holy Spirit calls to your
remembrance and experience the cleansing and forgiveness which
God promises in 1 John 1:9: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and
just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all
unrighteousness."

Verse 18
Knowing (ειδοτες — eidotes). Second perfect active participle of οιδα — oida causal participle. The
appeal is to an elementary Christian belief (Hort), the holiness and justice of God with
the added thought of the high cost of redemption (Bigg).
Ye were redeemed (ελυτρωτητε — elutrothete). First aorist passive indicative of λυτροω — lutroo old̄ ̄ ̄
verb from λυτρον — lutron (ransom for life as of a slave, Matthew 20:28), to set free by
payment of ransom, abundant examples in the papyri, in N.T. only here, Luke 24:21;
Titus 2:14. The ransom is the blood of Christ. Peter here amplifies the language in Isaiah
52:3.
Not with corruptible things (ου πταρτοις — ou phthartois). Instrumental case neuter plural of the
late verbal adjective from πτειρω — phtheirō to destroy or to corrupt, and so perishable, in N.T.
here, 1 Peter 1:23; 1 Corinthians 9:25; 1 Corinthians 15:53.; Romans 1:23. Αργυριωι η
χρυσιωι — Argurioi e chrusioi (silver or gold) are in explanatory apposition with πταρτοις̄ ̄ ̄
— phthartois and so in the same case. Slaves were set free by silver and gold.
From your vain manner of life (εκ της ματαιας υμων αναστροπης — ek tes mataias humon̄ ̄
anastrophes̄ ). “Out of” (εκ — ek), and so away from, the pre-Christian αναστροπη —

26. anastrophe of 1 Peter 1:15, which was “vain” (ματαιας — mataias Cf.̄ Ephesians 4:17-
24).
Handed down from your fathers (πατροπαραδοτου — patroparadotou). This adjective,
though predicate in position, is really attributive in idea, like χειροποιητου —
cheiropoietou in̄ Ephesians 2:11 (Robertson, Grammar, p. 777), like the French idiom.
This double compound verbal adjective (πατερ παρα διδωμι — paterparadidomi),̄ though here
alone in N.T., occurs in Diodorus, Dion. Halic, and in several inscriptions (Moulton and
Milligan‘s Vocabulary; Deissmann, Bible Studies, pp. 266f.). The Jews made a wrong
use of tradition (Matthew 15:2.), but the reference here seems mainly to Gentiles (1
Peter 2:12).
Verse 19
But with precious (5093) blood (αλλα τιμιωι αιματι — alla timioi haimatī ). Instrumental case of
αιμα — haima after ελυτρωτητε — elutrothetē ̄ (repeated from 1 Peter 1:18). Peter here applies
the old adjective τιμιος — timios (from τιμη — time of Christ in̄ 1 Peter 2:7) to Christ as in 1
Peter 1:7 πολυτιμοτερον — polutimoteron to testing of faith. The blood of anyone is
“precious” (costly), far above gold or silver, but that of Jesus immeasurably more so.
As of a lamb (ως αμνου — hos amnou).̄ This word occurs in Leviticus 12:8; Numbers 15:11;
Deuteronomy 14:4 of the lamb prescribed for the passover sacrifice (Exodus 12:5).
John the Baptist applies it to Jesus (John 1:29, John 1:36). It occurs also in Acts 8:32
quoted from Isaiah 53:7. Undoubtedly both the Baptist and Peter have this passage in
mind. Elsewhere in the N.T. αρνιον — arnion is used of Christ (Revelation 5:6,
Revelation 5:12). Jesus is the Paschal Lamb. Peter sees clearly that it was by the blood
of Christ that we are redeemed from sin.
Without blemish (αμωμου — amomoū ). Without (alpha privative) spot (μωμος — momos)̄ as
the paschal lamb had to be (Leviticus 22:21). So Hebrews 9:14.
Without spot (ασπιλου — aspilou). Without (alpha privative) stain (σπιλος — spilos spot) as in
James 1:27; 2 Peter 3:14; 1 Timothy 6:14
Even the blood of Christ (Χριστου — Christou). Genitive case with αιματι — haimati but in
unusual position for emphasis and clearness with the participles following.

27. INTRODUCTION:
The young fellow who build a little sail boat, and lost it and found it
THE THEME:
Redemption: Every time we say we have been saved, we should say we have
been redeemed. Everytime we call Jesus Savior, we should call Him Redeemer.
Thomas Watson: "Great was the work of creation, but greater was the work of
Redemption. It cost more to redeem us than to make us."
Redemption is a more specific term than salvation. Salvation looks at the whole
saving work, redemption looks at the price involved.
Redemption focus on how God got us back even though he made us. He bought us
back so that we could become His own.
THE STORY OF THE PASSOVER:
Exodus 12 is the story:
The Redemption by Blood: 12:7-14
The Passover became the typical picture of the sacrificial work of Christ. The
Passover became the symbol of deliverance from death. This became to
symbol of
substitutional redemption.
Israel saw God as one who bought them out of slavery. They today
celebrate the Passover. But because of the Cross we have communion,
rather than the passover.

28. God back to 1 Peter 1, "We were not redeemed with perishable things," that's for sure,
like silver or gold or any other perishable thing. The price, the ransom price paid to God
was not material. There was no amount of earthly wealth symbolized by silver and gold
that could deliver the eternal souls of people from the bondage of sin and death and hell.
There is no price within the reach of man that could satisfy God.
Psalm 49 Verses 7 and 8, "No man can, by any means, redeem his brother or give to God
a ransom for Him, for the redemption of his soul is costly. You don't have the capability
to come up with a price to redeem somebody's soul, not yours and not your brother's.
There is no earthly commodity that is subject to decay, corruption and perishing that can
pay the price that God requires to redeem a soul from sin and its consequence. On the
other hand, you were redeemed, Verse 19 says, "with precious blood as a lamb
unblemished and spotless, the Blood of Christ."
This is why we come to the Lord's Table because we come to celebrate that precious
blood. It isn't the fluid that saved us. I say that often because people misunderstand it.
Blood is simply a metaphor for death, a vivid metaphor for death. It's a vivid way to
describe death, and Jesus died a bloody death, a death that a sacrifice dies, but His death
was precious because He's precious. He is that lamb without blemish and without spot,
pictured in all the Old Testament sacrifices by that spotless lamb that was selected to be
the symbol of the final lamb, who would take away sin.
He is precious. Why precious? Well, I'll show you why. Precious because predestined,
Verse 20, "Precious for He was foreknown before the foundation of the world;" precious
because He was having been foreknown that is to be planned by God from before the
foundation of the world. "He was the lamb slain from before the foundation of the
world," so it says in the Book of Revelation, "The preciousness of Christ is, first of all,'
expressed in that exquisite reality of his predestination, his foreordination, precious
because perfect from before time ever began, eternally perfect; precious in his
predestination before the foundation of the world; precious secondly in his incarnation.
