So, for a brief introduction, CEU was founded in 1991 by a group of academics including Vaclav Havel, and led by George Soros, who wanted to create an opportunity in post-transition countries for English-language graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities. Since that time, CEU has graduated more than 10,000 students from its Masters and doctoral degree programs. . Accredited in both Hungary and the United States, CEU combines the best academic traditions from Europe and US. The University’s mission is to promote open socieities and democratization, diversity and human rights, and ethical business and the rule of law. CEU is very focused on critical thinking and interdisciplinary research excellence across all of its academic program has resulted in over 10 million euros in funding from the European Research Council, and CEU leads all other institutions in Central European in competitive EU-funded research grants. You’ll learn more about these areas from my colleagues, but before that, I’d like to show a three-minute video featuring the voices of some of our students, faculty, and staff. CEU was founded with the goal of providing an excellent, English language education to students from around the world, and thanks to significant financial aid provided directly by CEU, many talented students receive funding from CEU, ranging from partial tuition scholarships that cover between 50 and 100% of tuition to fellowship programs that provide tuition, a room in CEU’s residence center, and a stipend for living expenses. In addition, EU-funded scholarships are available for top students in the 3 Erasmus Mundus joint european degree programs in Environmental Sciences and Policy, Gender Studies, and Public Policy, and we have students and scholars receiving funding from the Fulbright Commission, Erasmus Mundus exchange funding, and other external sources.
