Elements of design
1. Elements of Design
•LINE-a path made by a moving point
•SHAPE-an area enclosed by a line
•FORM-physically occupies space (3-D). The
illusion of form is when an object or objects look like
they occupy space, even though they are 2-D
•SPACE-the distance around, between, above,
below, and within an object
•COLOR-an element that has intensity, hue, and
value
•VALUE-lightness and darkness, shadows and
shading
•TEXTURE-the surface feel of an object (rough,
smooth)
2. Principles of Design
• BALANCE-visual weight of the composition
(symmetrical, asymmetrical)
• EMPHASIS-center of interest
• UNITY-a feeling of togetherness or wholeness
(harmony)
• REPETITION --repeating the elements of
design. This creates RHYTHM.
• VARIATION--varying or changing the elements
of design. This creates MOVEMENT.
• PROPORTION-size relationship, how large or
small an object is compared to another object or
it’s environment
