– do sentir, do ver e do represen-
tar:
Mapas, deltas, ossos, areias, detritos, fraturas, esboroamentos, sulcos: tudo marcas - indecifrá-
veis umas, explícitas outras - a testemunhar origens e estatuto reconhecíveis, numa exibição
sentir.
Rios negros, gelo flutuante, ilhas, pele, fragmentações, taças ou pontes, poeiras, muros de pe-
dra solta, rugas: vestígios do labor oculto, quotidiano, silencioso e perseverante desse artista

No caso específico destas fotografias
descubram, mostrem e valorizem.
Enquadramentos e reenquadramentos, rotações, confrontos lado a lado, são outras tantas pos-

And the Laws of Physics came, and the men who began drawing came, dividing
upon the extension of the surface, each in their own way, marks of action subjec-
ted to laws so rarefied and secret as to be inscrutable and designated as chance.
However, what appears to the human eye as generated by accident is the una-
voidable creation of the maceration of time and the rigour of the Laws of Mat-
ter, which in its silent labour expands into infinite, albeit ever coherent, variety.
Then comes an opportunity for the action of gaze, sectioning and registering, choosing and
projecting, opening itself up to formal analogies, to analogical signification and to poetic me-
aning – opening up to form as perception beyond the visible, reencountering reminiscences,
signals of identification, resemblances, allusions, symptoms of multiple actions of matter over
matter, of fluids over solids, of layers and fissures.
To these is added the lexicon that opens unto the deciphering of the mystery and enchantment,
in an effort to come closer to a correspondence, insufficient if suggestive, between forms and
words that both transform into substance – immaterialized matter! – of feeling, seeing and re-
presenting:
Maps, deltas, bones, sands, detritus, fractures, crumblings, furrows:
A host of marks – some undecipherable, others explicit – testifying to recognizable origins
and status, perhaps in a rather unnecessary display of raison d’être, but nevertheless offering a
context, supporting an understanding of the nature itself of the work process of that immense
being that operates in mysterious ways with the iron fist of storms ruled by the secret laws of
chaos, that is reorganized by the sensibility through which we humanly see (and want to feel),
measure and determine everything.
Dark rivers, floating ice, islands, skin, fragmentations, cups or bridges, dust, loose stonewalls,
wrinkles: traces of the occult, quotidian, silent, persevering work of that street artist, nameless
and unacknowledged, who acts surreptitiously while awaiting the glorious ascension to which
perhaps only the sensibility of the photographer (coming from another world) can elevate him
to and establish him in. Not because the light is lacking, or its presence is slight, but because
light is made of an intangible dimension. Acting microscopically, reacting to the impact of the
tensions and temperature variations, or merely because it is by nature the soul and product of a
Transit composed of multiple, underestimated and anonymous factors to which it nevertheless
owes the particularity of its expression, the specificity of its aesthetics, as it simply awaits to be

To look at this series of photographs implies acknowledging in it a certain abstract quality, akin
to much of the painting made in the wake of lyrical, or even expressionist Abstractionism. Ho-
wever, and in contradistinction, there is in it an intrinsically concrete essence.
This observation issues from the fact that these images are, in actuality, inspired by a rather
mundane reality: the lines of zebra crossings on tar roads. But while calling them mundane we
cannot say that they come out of banality. They are surface, but one that affirms, in appearance,
its full and profound complexity.
The vision that brought them up to daylight ensues from an eternal curiosity vis-à-vis the world
surrounding us. On the one hand, such attitude allows working with the Real as a creative tool
and, on the other, being open to its eternal reinvention. What is at stake is to show that what
we all see is not a single, univocal or consensual reality, but rather the consequence of multiple
perspectives. The reminiscence that António Andrade speaks of is a consequence of this fact.
Thus, it is not only the gaze of the creator that ensues from an eternal curiosity but ours as well,
the gaze of the viewers, who when faced with what they see and according to their own ‘data-
bases’ imagine a varied set of situations, from mountains to rivers and so forth. In this regard,
I recall being a child travelling by car and looking out of the window to the clouds that, to my
eyes, morphed into animal shapes. And I recall the strange fact that no one else saw the same
shapes that drew themselves before my eyes...
So as not to loose this creative reinvention of the Life that surrounds us it suffices to keep
looking at the World with the fresh gaze of a child. In the specific case of these photographs,
we are alerted to the fact that we have all walked countless times over the roads and zebra
crossings of a hectic city without noticing the marks under our feet. In António Conceição Jú-
nior these become leitmotivs that transform detail into an art object.
It is curious to observe that in the simple details of a pavement, that here has been cut out and
isolated from its context, microcosm becomes macrocosm and vice-versa. Therefore, these
photographs may become cosmic images reminiscent of the somewhat ordered chaos of galac-
tic formations or stars. We would almost dare calling them ideographic, close to the archetype
that was once present in the archaic and pre-historical artistic manifestations, which are much
closer to contemporaneity than we might have guessed. Here we also find ourselves immersed
in the immense wonder of abstraction, open to the multiple interpretations of the visible.
discovered, shown and valued.
Framings and re-framings, rotations, parallel confrontations, series of possibilities for labour
and contemplation, a different way of exposing the ignored work of the supreme artist, rein-
venting it through a transforming passage into the manipulating lap of another support and
another destiny.
One exits the plane of so-called concrete reality to enter the plane of poetic intentionality. To
expose what has been read – re-reading it and sharing the fruition of the selected sections, the
fractions of an unreachable totality – so that others may rejoice in the novelty of that which is
yet to be perceived; thereby glimpsing, in refreshing delight, one more new world.

As Paul Klee says, Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible…
Thus, in the moment in which they allude to the ground these works are also speaking to us of
their opposite, as if, in accordance to the Tao, the whole permeated everything. ‘On Earth as it
is in Heaven’...
A final aspect that results from observing this series is the allusion to memory and, ultimately,
to Time, which is perhaps the common denominator in these works. Where we see what might
be the beginnings of celestial formations stand, in fact, the marks of an erosion caused by pe-
destrians, whose steps carry in them innumerable personal experiences and, simultaneously,
the testimony of a changing city. We are thus confronted with the true originality of these ima-
ges. It is not only in ruined buildings and in large-scale urban transformation that we witness
the passage of time in the city. It is in all these details (which no one seems to cherish) that
the layers of history exist. And it is the attitude of the artist that reinvents and at the same time
preserves them.
Because they are not blank slates, they stand at the verge of the palimpsest – ready for a new
writing.
