- Citizenship refers to membership in a group that gives one rights and responsibilities. Educating students about their responsibilities is the challenge.
- Ergonomic: Students are spending more and more time on computers. We have seen students in high school wearing splints to keep their wrist straight. Most equipment in schools is poorly set up. We teach them how to stretch and how to set up a workstation.
- Internet ethics is an oxymoron to students. To them it is a place to play with no rules, and no repercussions. This entire course is about changing their paradigm. It is like telling them Cheaters Never Prosper, all the evidence they have seen is to the contrary.
- Teaching students to respect copyrights and understand fair use is a difficult task. Students are very confused about public domain, intellectual property, and the kinds of work that need citations and how much of them they can use. Most importantly they don’t see that harm in duplicating others work.
- Using citation maker website we have students create citations. Up until this course students are seldom required to use citation. In fact they are encouraged to take pictures and copy text from websites to use in projects and presentations. I give them a newspaper article on Nigerian Internet Scams as the source.
- Few of our students create web pages and almost none of them know that there is web space reserved for them by their ISP. Some have used Web 2.0 type applications like MySpace to create a web presence. They tend to use the web for interaction rather than publication at this age. wiki Hawaiian for quick, Wikipedia blocked by some schools and useless for academic research. We like wikispaces for this activity. social networking The most common way students publish. We use Qspace as a frame of reference for discussions and an opportunity for students to model safe behavior.
- To quote Arthur C. Clarke, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Students have no idea how data travels on the Internet or how to make the most efficient use of it. How a search engine finds information or how to the results are valid are a mystery. By default they accept printed materials as fact.
- Students seem to think that they are the only people on the planet that lie. They are fooled by all but the most obvious sites. Usually it is due to a lack of attention to detail which is a pervasive quality of their internet experience. Students skim at best. They need to learn to be more critical readers.
