EXPLANATION OF PROCESSThe selection panel is chosen by Dr. Tyrone Taborn, Chairman and CEO of Career Communications Group, Inc., and is comprises government, military, and corporate leaders from all parts of the science and technical community nationwide. Panel members are group into sub-committees by award categories and required to attend a day-and-a-half selection committee meeting to review and score the packages in their category. Each panel member will read through all of the nomination packages in their assigned categories and seek out individuals with outstanding achievements, keeping in mind relative strengths and weaknesses of each candidate within a category. EXPLANATION OF PROCESS (cont.)All candidates are ranked and scored by categories. The subcommittee members are then encourage to discuss/debate these rankings to ensure that both subjective and objective information has been considered. It is important to note that the final subcommittee ranking is not based solely on objective scoring.Once the subcommittee comes to consensus on their top 2 – 3 candidates, they will prepare a brief presentations of these candidates and presented their recommendations to the entire selection panel. If applicable, the subcommittee members will also recommend nominees from their categories to be considered as the Black Engineer of the Year. All of the recommendations are then submitted to the executive committee for final review and selection.
So here is the nomination formMake sure you have the latest form downloaded from the BEYA websiteEnsure that all the fields are filled in completely and the information on the form is consistant with the information throughout the packageUnderstand that your HR system may have a standard job title but the person may list a professional title (Mechanical Engineer vs Lead ME, Surface Mount Technologies)The nominator should be someone that knows and can vouch for the candidate. Its important to have the nominators correct title. It shows that the work that the candidate is performing is being recognized and is important to the success of the business or military operations they are invovled with.If they are handwritten, please make sure they are legible, we prefer types, except the signature of the nominee.
Org charts are important. It gives the selection committee to see where the candidate is in the organization and what responsibility they may have. Not every candidate will have an organization they are managing and the committee is aware of these and takes into account the award category and the appropriateness of the candidates responsibility, so for instance, if we are reviewing the managerial leadership award, we will probably weigh the breadth and depth of the nominees reach more heavily than a canidate for most promising engineer.
The Quality of content, the levels and the quantity demonstrate the overall company support for the nominee. This should be a separate tab in the nomination book with a table of contents with the person (name, title) in order as they appear in the section. Separate the company, customers and business partners letters from the community letters; use company stationery and make sure they are signed. The Selection Committee is composed of non-technical as well as technical people, so write the letters to be easily understood by any lay person. Try to keep the letter to one page and do not to use acronyms. Please write out everything because people who are not familiar with your business may not understand what the acronym mean.Quantify wherever you can! If you can measure the nominee’s positive impact, please do! Numbers are more impressive than general statements.Address the letter to the appropriate Selection Committee (BEYA, WOC, etc.) and make sure it has a current date. The letter should address the category the nominee is being submitted for and not just a general letter or a letter that was written for a different recognition.Do not use form letters or reuse statements, sentences in multiple letters
Please refer to the “Preparing an application” section of the brochure or CCG website for detailed photo specs.Nominee should be in conservative, professional attire (business attire for women, blue/black suit and tie for men, or military attireSpecifications for photographs:Color or black & white photographs – maximum size 8”x10”; minimum size 5”x7”Digital photographs – High-resolution only. Minimum 300 dpi resolution. EPS, JPEG, or TIFF format. Minimum size 5”x7”. Please DO NOT send photos in Microsoft Word or in PowerPoint. Save files as “firstname_lastname.filetype.” such as John_Smith.jpgDO NOT send inkjet printouts of photosMake sure the photograph is a good representation of the nominee as well as the organization (company, military branch, educational institution, etc.)
