Dr. Carol Bearse presented at the 2011 TESOL Convention on using poetry to enhance English language learning. Some key benefits of poetry discussed included promoting academic English, vocabulary growth, and oral fluency. The presentation covered using metaphors and the five senses in poetry to support reading and writing. It also provided many examples of how to incorporate poetry into content areas like English language arts, social studies, and science. Frameworks and rubrics were shared for writing poetry about identity, special people and places.
