ART
Head of Department: Liz Edwards
Exam Board: Edexcel
Course contents: Students use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and
processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. It allows the students to discover the
richness and variety found in Art and Design allowing them to go on to express themselves in an
individual way. In particular we aim to develop student confidence, enthusiasm and a sense of
achievement in the practice of Art and Design. Understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of
the visual arts have the power to enrich our personal and public lives.
Term One
Individual student projects

Term Two
Term Three
Individual student projects and
External exam
External exam Preparation

Coursework: Coursework at A2 (unit 3) incorporates two elements: Practical work and a
written Personal study, which takes the form of a critical written response to a negotiated
starting point of significant artistic interest. The two elements should be seen as integrally
connected and supporting each other. The deadline for completion of coursework is 1 February.
External Exams: The external 12 hour art exam will be conducted over two days, under exam
conditions set by Edexcel.
Homework: Homework is issued and marked every week, and it forms important links with
class work. As the year goes on homework is focused more on the completion of coursework
pieces, and the development of the sketchbook. It is vital that students understand that
‘everything’ they do over the 1 year course will be marked, and as such may affect their grade.
Assessment Policy: The exam at A2 (unit 4) is an externally set theme which following the
preparatory period (as in GCSE and AS) culminates in a 12 hour terminal exam. Assessment
Objectives are shared with AS and whilst very similar to GCSE expect a greater depth of
understanding and enquiry.
Recommendations: Encourage students to draw from ’direct observation’ as much as
possible; this will help to develop their skills and confidence in many other areas. Encourage
students to visit art galleries and exhibitions to enhance their understanding of the work of
artists, craftspeople and designers. Visits to universities and organizing relevant work experience
is recommended to those considering art as a possible career path.

Head of Department: Sheryl Howells
Exam board: Edexcel
Course contents:
Term One

Term Two

Term Three

Theory; Preparation for optimum sports performance
Practical; coursework (practical component)
Assessment Policy: 4 lessons physiology – short term preparation, 4 lessons psychology –
long term preparation, 4 lessons coursework per 2 week cycle.
Practical: The tasks undertaken in the AS Unit 2: The Critical Sports Performer lay the
foundation for students to specialise in one practical performance role and progress this
performance, and undertake three further tasks. Students will construct a development
plan to further progress their performance as player/participants, leaders or officials. They
will also research one of these roles in an international context, taking in grassroots
participation, elite performance and other factors. Students will then continue to refine their
performances in one chosen role.
Lastly, they will plan their life in physical activity, from the Advanced Subsidiary course to
the potential opportunities and performance structure open to them, thereby outlining a
‘time line’, through school, college, university, club, veterans and future roles. This unit is
internally assessed and externally moderated. Students must complete all four tasks which
accounts for 50% of the AS and 25% of the total A-level.
Theory: The assessment of this unit is through a 2 hour examination paper which is set and
marked by Edexcel. The paper will be a question and answer booklet, consisting of short
answer and extended writing type questions, all of which are compulsory. Students will
develop a knowledge and understanding of the short and long-term physiological and
psychological preparations made by elite athletes. They will consider the short- and longterm technical preparations required, eg selection of appropriate kit and equipment, the use
of training camps, different types of ergonomic aids. The theory section will account for
50% of the AS and 25% of the total A-level.
Recommendations: It is advised that students read around and research the subject area
by reading newspapers, books and the internet.

  • 9. CAXTON COLLEGE YEAR 13 A LEVEL ART Head of Department: Liz Edwards Exam Board: Edexcel Course contents: Students use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. It allows the students to discover the richness and variety found in Art and Design allowing them to go on to express themselves in an individual way. In particular we aim to develop student confidence, enthusiasm and a sense of achievement in the practice of Art and Design. Understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts have the power to enrich our personal and public lives. Term One Individual student projects Term Two Term Three Individual student projects and External exam External exam Preparation Coursework: Coursework at A2 (unit 3) incorporates two elements: Practical work and a written Personal study, which takes the form of a critical written response to a negotiated starting point of significant artistic interest. The two elements should be seen as integrally connected and supporting each other. The deadline for completion of coursework is 1 February. External Exams: The external 12 hour art exam will be conducted over two days, under exam conditions set by Edexcel. Homework: Homework is issued and marked every week, and it forms important links with class work. As the year goes on homework is focused more on the completion of coursework pieces, and the development of the sketchbook. It is vital that students understand that ‘everything’ they do over the 1 year course will be marked, and as such may affect their grade. Assessment Policy: The exam at A2 (unit 4) is an externally set theme which following the preparatory period (as in GCSE and AS) culminates in a 12 hour terminal exam. Assessment Objectives are shared with AS and whilst very similar to GCSE expect a greater depth of understanding and enquiry. Recommendations: Encourage students to draw from ’direct observation’ as much as possible; this will help to develop their skills and confidence in many other areas. Encourage students to visit art galleries and exhibitions to enhance their understanding of the work of artists, craftspeople and designers. Visits to universities and organizing relevant work experience is recommended to those considering art as a possible career path. • 10. CAXTON COLLEGE YEAR 13 A LEVEL BUSINESS STUDIES Head of Department: Les Golding Exam Board: Edexcel Course contents: Term One Unit 3 – International Business Term Two Term Three Unit 4a: Making Business Decisions Why does a business seek international markets? Corporate objectives and strategy Key players in the world economy Making strategic decisions How does a company decide which countries to target? Other considerations before trading internationally Globalisation Decision-making techniques Assessing competitiveness Company growth Are multinationals a force for good or should they be controlled? Internal Exams: Twice every term after completing main topic areas. External exams: Unit 3 - Examination of 1 hour 30 minutes in two sections. (January)  Section A: questions based on data.  Section B: case study and questions. Unit 4a - Examination of 1 hour 30 minutes in two sections. (May/June)  Section A: questions based on data.  Section B: decision-making report and questions. (Context of a decision-making report) The decision-making material is pre-released and students need to become very familiar with all aspects of this. This will require students to conduct a great deal of independent research. Homework: 2/3 set per week, to be handed in next lesson. Late homework is unacceptable and results in a low effort grade.
