19. The little word “wa” is
called a particle. Particles
are used to join words
together in Japanese and
help us with the grammar.
Look at the hiragana
chart. See if you can
discover what is strange
about the particle は“wa”.
20. Well done! The particle
“wa” is actually a “ha”.
We’ll call this the ha/wa
Sometimes when joining
words or at the end of
some words ha will pretend
to be a wa when it is acting
as a particle.
You already know a word
where this happens……
Can you think of it?
22. Well done. You have
already learned so much
Japanese. Ganbatte

36. The hiragana alphabet is made up of 46
characters. Some characters are single sounds,
like n and the five vowel sounds: a, i, u, e, o.
The others are one or more consonants and a
vowel, for example, sa, shi, su, se, so. Unlike
Kanji, generally hiragana just represent sounds
and does not have a meaning.
The 46 hiragana can be used to create more
sounds by adding tenten (び)and maru(ぴ). By
adding tenten to ka, ki, ku, ke, ko, you get ga,
gi, gu, ge, go.
Look at the hiragana chart on the inside back
cover of your coursebook. What other symbols
change with tenten and maru?
