For 10 years, Dr. David Pulman was
President of Global Manufacturing
and Supply (GMS) for
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). The
dimensions of his responsibilities
included manufacturing operations in
79 factories situated in 40 countries,
manufacturing strategy, procurement,
external
supply and supply chain
logistics, and new product
launch and industrialisation.
GMS had a world-wide
workforce of 25,000 and a
cost base of c. £4.5bn
($7bn).
3. Key achievements included improving Quality,
Environmental, Health & Safety performance (the
fundamentals), productivity improvements of c 55%, the
establishment of a Lean Sigma culture and a move into
more advanced manufacturing technologies. The
foundation of operating performance was the absolute
belief in technical excellence, development of both
individual, team and organisational capability and ethical
decision making based on a strong value set.
4. Other career highlights included the integration of
manufacturing operations between Glaxo and Wellcome,
when GW was established, and coordinating the
establishment of International Commercial Operations at
the formation of GSK, being a member of the merger team.
