Teaching style grew out of Gardner’s multiple intelligences theory and gives advocacy for the 5% of kinesthetic learners. The purpose is to help students get ready to learn – help them be more engaged and focused – it is not traditional yoga but specifically designed for students – it inspires learners to be alert, yet relaxed, inquirers, caring, committed, disciplined, and empowered students who develop a life-long interest for learning.

There can be no simple solution to the child obesity crisis because no single factor is responsible; the problem is bound up with the way kids live their lives with high levels of gaming and inactivity. Child obesity has tripled in the last 30 years. We need to teach the principles of healthy eating, exercise and methods of stress management. Yoga is wellness through action.
High stress levels impair students’ academic achievement, personal and professional development. A study was conducted on secondary school students in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia. Results: Out of 505 selected participants, found that the prevalence of distressed secondary school students was 32.8%. The major stressors for all types of schools were academic-related issues. Yoga and savashana (dead man’s pose) allows deep relaxation which calms the brain and relieves stress.
numerous studies show a link between yoga and better learning, improved behaviours and higher self esteem. In 2007 a study conducted by Purdue University and Indiana University concluded that, “yoga has a significant positive effect on the academic achievement, general health, personal attributes and relationships of students”
It helps breathe life into learning with movement (poses, art work, games), breathing, guided visualization and relaxation. There are few better ways to improve posture, flexibility, strength, balance and coordination which is a great compliment to sports. Balances and coordinates the hemispheres of the brain. Dr Paul Dennison, creator of brain gym discovered that certain kinds of exercises improves the brain’s processing and problem-solving skills.

What separates yoga from other forms of exercise is the constant and continual awareness of the breathing. The breath is the link between the mind and the body. Most of us tend towards shallow and rapid breathing and the pattern associated with stress and anxiety. Deeper and slower breathing is associated with feeling calm and relaxed. We function at our best when we bring more oxygen to our brain.
When students are quiet and relaxed they are open to receiving and reinforcing information. You can take advantage of receptivity by including specific subject area information in a ‘guided visualization’, for example going on a journey on a magic cloud carpet and you take them to a place and they are then asked to recall specific details of their imagination using their senses. For example what do they smell, hear, see, feel, taste, remember?
