3. One of the largest fountains in the world,
the Buckingham Fountain measures
85m/280ft in diameter. It features 134 jets
powered by 3 pumps.
The fountain's hourly 20 minute water
display starts with small sprays. While the
basins are filled more and more jets are
activated until it reaches its climax when
the central jet pushes water up to a height
of 46m/150ft. The animation is best seen
at dusk - after 8 pm - when it is
accompanied with music and beautifully
animated with a now computerized
choreography of color spotlights.

5. Willis Tower (formerly named, and still commonly
referred to as Sears Tower) is a 108-story, 1451-
foot (442 m) skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois. At the
time of its completion in 1974, it was the tallest
building in the world, surpassing the World Trade
Center towers in New York, and it held this rank for
nearly 25 years. The Willis Tower is the tallest
building in the United States and the fifth-tallest
freestanding structure in the world, as well as the
fifth tallest building in the world to the roof.
6. The Art Institute of Chicago,
founded in 1879 as both a
museum and school, first stood
on the southwest corner of State
and Monroe Streets. It opened
on its present site at Michigan
Avenue and Adams Street in
1893. Built on rubble from the
1871 Chicago fire, the museum
housed a collection of plaster
casts and had a visionary
purpose: to acquire and exhibit
art of all kinds and to conduct
programs of education. The
collection now encompasses
more than 5,000 years of human
expression from cultures around
the world, and the school's
graduate program is continually
ranked as one of the best in the
country. Within the next decade,
a new complex will continue this
process of growth.
7. The Trump International Hotel and Tower,
also known as Trump Tower Chicago and
locally as the Trump Tower, is a
skyscraper condo-hotel in downtown
Chicago, Illinois. The building, named after
real estate developer Donald Trump, was
designed by architect Adrian Smith of
Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Bovis Lend
Lease built the 98-story structure, which
reached a height of 1,389 feet (423 m)
including its spire, its roof topping out at
1,170 feet (360 m). It is adjacent to the
main branch of the Chicago River, with a
view of the entry to Lake Michigan beyond
a series of bridges over the river. The
building received publicity when the winner
of the first season of The Apprentice
television show, Bill Rancic, chose to
manage the construction of the tower.
8. Aqua is an 86-story mixed-use
residential skyscraper in the
Lakeshore East development
in downtown Chicago designed
in the Postmodern architectural
style. Designed by a team led
by Jeanne Gang, the building
is the tallest in the world to
have a woman as lead
architect, at 859 ft (262 m). It
includes one level of parking
below ground..
The building's eight-story, 140,000 sq ft (13,000 m2) base is
topped by a 82,550 sq ft (7,669 m2) terrace with gardens,
gazebos, pools, hot tubs, a walking/running track and a fire
pit. Each floor will cover approximately 16,000 sq ft (1,500
m2). The Aqua was named the Emporis Skyscraper Award
2009 skyscraper of the year and was shortlisted in 2010 for
the biannual International Highrise Award
9. The John Hancock Tower, officially
named Hancock Place and
colloquially known as The
Hancock, is a 60-story, 790-foot
(241 m) skyscraper in Boston. The
tower, the tallest in the city, was
designed by Henry N. Cobb of the
firm now known as Pei Cobb Freed
& Partners and was completed in
1976. In 1977, the American
Institute of Architects presented the
firm with a National Honor Award
for the building and in 2011
conferred on it the AIA Twenty-five
Year Award. It has been the tallest
building in Boston for more than 30
years, and is the tallest building in
New England, as well as the 198th
tallest building in the world.

this wide-ranging odyssey that traces the city’s
development from its founding to the very present. This
bus tour covers 30 miles of Chicago design, with a route
that covers the Loop, Hyde Park, the Gold Coast, the
Lakefront, two university campuses, and several parks and
residential neighborhoods. Stops include the Rookery in
downtown Chicago, Mies van der Rohe’s IIT campus and
