Cases in Finance
Case 41, MoGen, Inc. – Finance 675
David Biggs, Amanda McAllaster, Jake Unruh, Andy Rao
Background Information
MoGen is a leading company in the recently surging biotechnology industry that specializes in
human therapeutic drugs that help offset the damaging effects of chemotherapy for cancer patients.
The business model for all biotech companies is fairly similar: through extensive R&D, create new
medical drugs, obtain FDA approval and product patents and launch them into the market.
In order to achieve profitability and increase the likelihood of FDA approval for their various
projects, MoGen must ensure a consistent supply of cash to fund R&D efforts and maintain financial
flexibility in the face of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since repurchases reduce the shares outstanding, it kept the EPS relatively steady despite the
dilutive effects on EPS from the convertibles.
The share repurchase also provided a positive signal to the market that the company viewed its stock
as undervalued, a strategy that could encourage investors to increase their positions in the firm.
Fund Usage and Firm Needs in 2006
By 2006, MoGen needed an additional $10 billion of funding for various projects that aimed to
improve manufacturing capacity and processes, formulation, fill and finish capacity, investment in
R&D and late–stage trials, acquisition and licensing, and stock repurchasing.
To improve manufacturing processes and reduce supply risks, the firm estimated a $1 billion R&D,
a vital component of the business needed a 30% increase in funding, totaling to an additional $3
billion. Mogen was also looking to acquire Genix, Inc. and their intellectual capital for
approximately $2 billion. Finally, the management team also wanted to maintain the share
repurchase program and expected to spend $3.5 billion.
All of these projects add up to a total of roughly $10 billion. Internally generated funds were
estimated to be $5 billion from net income and depreciation, requiring MoGen to find the other half
of the funding from a different source.
In search of additional funding, MoGen considered raising the $5 billion by issuing

Family and Cultural Ties in Amy Tan's Two Kinds and...
People have different culture backgrounds which are very special to them. Usually families' tradition
and thoughts are affected by their cultural backgrounds. Environment is one of the most important
factors in a human's development. When the term "environment" is used, it refers to factors such as
family and cultural tie. In today's society, each individual is living his or her life in different a way
than others.' Individual's life choice is generally controlled, learned, influenced, and raised by the
cultural background. "Two kinds' by Amy Tan and "The Red Convertible" by Louise Erdrich reveal
how family is important and precious in culture.
Story of "Two Kinds" by Tan is very similar to situations in South Korea. In recent years, ... Show

"Two kinds" is a story, a Chinese girl whose life is influenced by her mother. Her mother came to
America after losing everything in China. Jing–Mei's mother was immigrated early to America from
China who has "American dream". Her mother had high expectations on her daughter and did not
care how it could affect her. It made Jing–Mei become a stubborn and rebellious person. "In the
years that followed, I failed her so many times, each time asserting my own will, ... for unlike my
mother, I did not believe I could be anything I wanted to be, I could only be me. (104) She
expressed her anger by going against her mother's expectations in 'who I am', it inferred that such
tendency come from her childhood experiences. Jing–Mei was frustrated because she could not
satisfy her mother.
However years later, she was grown up enough to understand and realize her mother's love for her.
In the last sentence of story, she wrote ,"[a]nd after I played them both a few times, I realized they
were two halves of the same song" (105) Jing–Mei understood and rediscovered why her mother
gave pressure on her.
"The Red Convertible" is a story of Henry, the American Indian man, about how he was suffering
from the experiences at the Vietnam War. The story begins when he and his brother purchased a red
convertible car. This story indicates that how cultural ties and the brother's precious memories
helped recover Henry. Actually it is more about the importance of family. By

Here, can see that the ROE is mainly driven by the Assets turnover, which keep increasing despite
the 2001 crisis. On the other hand, the Operating margins is severely hit by the Internet Bubble with
a negative ratio of –19,24% in 2001 and – 44,66% in 2002. This means that €1 of sales generated
negative earnings. This is quite understandable with the crisis The leverage ratio on the other hand is
increasing until 2001 to reach almost 5 and then become negative in 2002 before going back to its
level in 2003. This indicates how much Assets can be used with €1 of Equity and despite the
negative number in 2002, the ratio remains quite strong. Then, let's analyse the leverage effect.

4)For the investor, two elements are important regarding to the convertible bonds : first, convertible
bonds can have the same structure than bonds (straight payoff with possibility to increase), but they
are quite more risky, because if there is no conversion, they paid the same amount for a product than
can be two times less rentable. Second, bonds are a call option on the equity, that means that there
expectations should be bullish, hoping for an increase in share price. This should be their real goal,
overwise it would be preferable to buy normal bonds.

income statement and/or balance sheet. That is to say the total nominal value of the convertible bond
which is considered a liability and as such appears in the balance sheet: €1 000 000 707.
However according to the IFRS, initially, the liability component is calculated by discounting the
future cash flows of the bonds (interest and principle) at the rate of a similar debt instrument without
the conversion option. FT's 5 years Corporate Bond Yield is 3,90%. The true accounting cost should

Theme Of Red Convertible
The Red Convertible In the "Red Convertible" by Louise Erdrich the theme is evident. Throughout
the story he shows that situations in can have life altering effects. Erdrich takes the reader on a
journey of two brothers whose names were Lyman and Henry. He covers us from the time they buy
their first car, to the time of the death of Henry, the older brother. He uses a myriad of literary
devices to bring the story across. Erdrich used the reservation as the setting because it foreshadows
the loneliness that each character experiences. In addition, he uses the reservation to symbolize the
hardship and loneliness of life in the Lyman and Henry. He uses the red convertible to symbolize the
journey that each brother went through. In addition, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the war he was silent, got distracted easily and was reserved. Erdrich describes that he was as
quite, and was "never comfortable sitting still anywhere but he always up moving around. (pg 4)".
Lyman is very distraught at this change and would do anything to have his brother back. Therefore,
he plans to mess up the car because of an earlier conversation with his family which expressed that
the doctors could not cure him "they will just give them drugs (5)." This shows the lack of faith the
Indians has in doctors. As a result, he destroyed the car he kept in tip top condition. Erdrich
describes Lyman ruining the car, he "whacked it up, bent the pipe tail, ripped the muffler loose...I
made it look as beat up as I could" (5). Fortunately, his plan workes. It took Henry over a month to
find the car, but Lyman was okay with that because it was getting warm enough for Henry to start
working on it. Lyman states that "Henry was better than he had been before" but that is an
understatement. Even though, "he ate more slowly and didn't jump around during a meal... or look
out the window (5)", Lyman was unsatisfied with the results. He states "feeling down in the dumps
about his brother, before the war they had always been henry and Lyman, but he was such a loner
now. (6)" His very plan was crumbling before his eyes. No matter how hard Lyman tries he could
not fully recover his long–lost brother. As a result, of his plan, one can assume that Lyman felt
neglected.

Why A Corporation May Consider Convertible Bond Issuance
There are number reasons a corporation may consider convertible bond issuance. The instrument
itself is a bond that may be converted to another type of security at the company that issued the
bond. Converting such an item is all left up to the discretion of the bondholder. The reason for a
company to want to issue such an item of course would always be in the best interest of the
company itself for doing so. Convertible bonds are considered what is known as a hybrid security
where it is considered to be both debt and equity by the issuing company (Saunders & Cornett,
2015, p. 185).
One of the reasons the company would want to issue convertible bond would be is the yield that
they have to pay generally lower than that of a non–convertible bond. The reason the rate is lower is
important because it is indeed a hybrid security where gives the bondholder an investment
opportunity in the company in the future, hence making the instrument more attractive to investors
(Badraoui & Ouenniche, 2014). Since the instrument is more attractive, a lower yield may be
offered that will still garner and peak invested interest in the product (Saunders & Cornett, 2015).
Pricing is usually set so as not in the best interest to convert the bond stock unless the company sees
an increase of the stock price in the range from 15 to 20 percent from the time the bond was issued
(Saunders & Cornett, 2015, p. 187).
The most common type of debt covenants that will show up in a contract between a

Mustang Convertible Is No Different
His car stalls in the driveway while he gathers his necessities. It is a simple machine the one of
dreams, an American car for an American kid. Ford has always made exceptional vehicles. The 2001
Mustang convertible is no different. Much like where its name is derived from, it seems to gallop
through town stealing the attention of all who witness the glistening green tint. It is not a statement;
it is not a cry for attention. Simply put: it is youth. Before embarking, the top is set down like the
curtain of a play waiting to burst with art. Setting off with the sun behind his back, he reminds
himself that he will grow old. Following aspirations requires something much more dependable. A
man's first car will simply not do the trick. Another must step in and assume the reigns. Driving
effortlessly into the twilight, he begins to wonder how this car will affect its next owner. That new
handler will clench the door handle with an excitement that can not be measured. The transition into
the drivers seat is so smooth and mesmerizing. He will become a new man. Gripping the coarse
steering wheel, the feeling of euphoria carries him over to the shifter, the sense of power is running
through his veins. Shifting into drive is a pleasure he respects each and every time. Driving down
the main strip of town the hair on the back of his neck, irritated at first by the change in temperature,
is now standing in applause of his decision to take the car for a midnight cruise.

What To Look For When Buying A Convertible Car Seat So you have finally picked out the perfect
infant car seat, everything is going swimmingly, and then your child grows up and outgrows their
infant car seat. Well unfortunately you now have to go researching for a new car seat, and have to
pay another couple hundred dollars. Does this sound familiar? Well it is a situation that happens to
tons of first time parents, but it shouldn't be happening because there is an easy solution, convertible
car seats. Convertible car seats are car seats that can be used as a rear facing car seat for infants, and
a forward facing car seat for toddlers. I want to prevent parents from unnecessarily spending money,
so I am writing this guide to help parents understand what they should look for when buying their

an entire seat covered in puke is priceless. Also, many car seats come with cup holders, which can

The Red Convertible
Emotional connections between two people can be fortified with an object in which both people can
care for and share with one another. In the story "The Red Convertible" by Louise Erdrich, Lyman
and Henry have a special bond. This bond is emphasized in the red convertible because it
symbolizes the connection that both brothers have with one another. After Henry goes off to war
Lyman takes care of the car. Lyman cares for the car as if he were trying to preserve the bond that he
and Henry had. Furthermore, Lyman knows to some extent that the bond between his brother and
him is fragile because Henry has been gone away to war. The color of the car which is red has a
double meaning which includes emotions such as the love that exists between the brothers, but also
disaster like war. The war separated them both emotionally and physically, but despite this, at the
end, they were able to relive the old days when their bond was at its strongest. The characters in this
short story have an object which they seem to both enjoy and use to bond with one another by taking
trips. Erdrich, uses the car as a symbolism of the bond that the Lamartine brothers share. The trips
that both brothers went on were full of adventure and joy and much of that joy came from having
the car and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Towards the middle of the story we see how Lyman damages the car and this is to regain his
brothers interest in the car. He wants his brother back and by having Henry fix the car it would be as
if he were fixing the bond between the two. Lyman describes how he "did a number on its
underside. Whacked it up... and waited for Henry to find it"(891). He wanted to"bring the old Henry
back" (891), and what better way to do this than to have Henry focus on the one thing both brothers
enjoyed which was the convertible. He thought that the car would make Henry return back to his old

Theme Of The Red Convertible
1. In "The Red Convertible," Lyman Lamartine is the narrator and the protagonist at the same time.
Lyman was a young boy who at his short age had successfully accomplished many goals and dreams
that soon after were just in his memory. In the short story, Lyman talks about the amazing
relationship that he has with his older brother Henry Lamartine. However, everything changes after
Henry comes back from the military service. Lyman tries to help his brother to overcome with the
post–traumatic stress disorder that the war had left on him. Unfortunately, Henry takes his own life,
leaving Lyman devastated because he feels that he could not help his brother.

The most important symbolism in "The Red Convertible" is of course the old red car that they both
own. The car represents the relationship between two brothers. Both, Lyman and Henry, go for an
adventure the summer prior Henry is called on duty. In the absent of Henry, Lyman enjoys spending
time fixing the car because he feels like if he was spending time with his brother. However, their
relationship change after Henry gets back from Vietnam. Henry's behavior changes due to the
torture that he suffers after being captured for three by the enemy. Lyman tries to get his brother
back to his normal life but was impossible. Lyman beats up the car representing the broken
connection that they both have. In contrast, Henry reacts in a very Angry and in a upsetting way for
his incompetency of showing that inside him he still feels love for his brother. Henry fixes the car
and gives it to Lyman as a sign of his love. At the end, Lyman lets the car sinks in the water as his
brother disappears in the river. That is how Lyman ends up the connection with his

Over the years, the industry had made progress in shortening the approval time and improving the
predictability of the approval process. At the same time, industry R&D expenditures had increased
12.6% over 2003 in the continuing race to find the next big breakthrough product. Like all biotech
companies, MoGen faced uncertainty regarding new product creating as well as challenges involved
with sustaining a pipeline of future products. Now a competitive threat of follow–on biologics or
"biosimilars" began emerging. As drugs neared the end of their patent protection, competitors would
produce similar drugs as substitutes. Competitors could not produce the drug exactly, because they
did not have access to the original manufacturer's molecular clone or purification process. Thus,
biosimilars required their own approval to ensure they performed as safely as the original drugs. For
MoGen, this threat was particularly significant in Europe, where several patents were approaching
expiration. Funding Needs MoGen needed to ensure a consistent supply of cash to fund R&D and to
maintain financial flexibility in the face of uncertain challenges an opportunities. MoGen had cited
several key areas that would require approximately $10 billion in funding for 2006: 1. Expanding

"The Red Convertible"
After reading the short story, "The Red Convertible", by Louise Erdrich, it is evident that the red
convertible, in the story, is symbolic of the connection between Henry and Lyman. Their connection
was unique in the fact that they were not only brothers, but also connected through the purchase of
the red convertible, that they had bought together. While Lyman was away at war, Henry stated, "I

Personal Question
Why do I keep my Jeep when it keeps breaking down on me? That is the question that I have asked
myself multiple times over the summer. To this day, I have put more time, effort and money into my
Jeep than it is actually worth. So why continue to restore this beautifully ancient beast? Well, the
answer is actually very simple; I love working on it. When I was first told that I was getting an
automobile, I expected to go out and hand pick one that I deemed suitable for my everyday tasks. To
my surprise, my father pretty much narrowed the selection process down for me, providing me with
a specific list of Craigslist adds that he had compiled during his work day. After browsing this
selection, I had settled on a 1987 light blue Jeep Wrangler, with a soft top and a sport roll cage. This
jeep came with the legendary fuel injected 4.0 Liter, 6 cylinder engine, aptly nicknamed the "Tank",
due to its sturdy construction of cast iron. The fact that we found this jeep for under five–thousand
dollars was astonishing to me, so I immediately jumped on the opportunity presented to me. When
my father and I had finally settled on this Jeep, we drove to savannah to inspect it ourselves. When

31). If a conversion ratio, rather than a conversion price, is specified, the effective price of stock to
the bondholder may be determined by dividing the par value of the bond by the number of shares
exchangeable for one bond. The conversion price, which is determined when the bonds are 30%, is
usually from 10 to 20 percent above the prevailing market price of the common stock at the time of
issue. Both the issuing form and the investor expect that the market price of the stock will rise above
the conversion price, and that the conversion privilege will then be exercised by most or all
bondholders. The indenture typically includes a call provision so that the issuing firm can force
bondholders to convert. Therefore, it is evident that firms issuing convertible debt

3.1 Advantages The use of convertible debt would offer Hamilton advantages over straight debt or

to accept a low stated interest rate on such bonds, to pay a premium and accept a lower yield, or to
accept less restrictive covenants. Hamilton could thus obtain funds at a lower cost than would be
possible if it issued bonds without the conversion privilege. The advantages of a convertible bond

Further, keeping in view the strong competitive environment and fear of "Clones" by others, Intel is
constantly required to look for innovative products, which would need more funds for upfront
expenditures. In these situations, large cash positions would help Intel to avoid taking loans from
outside, and in turn interest costs, by using its own cash balances. A disadvantage of having large
cash position would be that cash has an opportunity cost. In other words, Intel could be forgoing
profitable investment opportunities. However looking at the data provided in the case, we can see
that the cost of holding cash was small as they yield high returns, above 170 bases points above U.S
treasury bills, through investing in securities rated above AA. Further, a cash rich company runs the
risk of being careless as there may be reduced pressure on the management team to perform better.
Observing Intel's growing performance over a period of time, it seems that currently it has no such
problem. However in future, it may become a cause of concern for the company.

Symbolism In The Red Convertible
Henry 's worn clothing, boots, and Bonita 's picture all convey symbolism in The Red Convertible
by Lousie Erdrich. These symbols are presented to provide the reader a better understanding of
Henry 's emotional transition when he returned from the military. Henry 's worn clothing represented
who he used to be before the military, and what psychological struggles he couldn 't escape. The
boots represented the emotional turmoil he faced in the military, and Bonita 's picture of Henry
helped show how detached he became with the world around him.

But he might have drawn back because the shadows on his face are deep as holes. There are two
shadows curved like little hooks around the ends of his smile, as if to frame it and try to keep it

in the photo signified Henry 's bleak outlook and attempted to conceal his true feelings through the
darkness.
Lyman tried to bring Henry out of his depressed state by having Henry work on their convertible.
After days of working on the car, Lyman saw a change in Henry, they decided to take a joy ride
together to the river to just relax. Lyman was under the impression that his brother had come back to
his normal self. However, that was not the case. Henry decided to jump into the river saying "got to
cool me off" (Erdrich, 114. Henry was really trying to commit suicide. In a normal voice Lyman
heard Henry say "my boots are filling" (Erdrich, 114). At this point, Lyman could no longer see
Henry and Lyman didn't rush to try to save Henry. Lyman came to terms that Henry was gone, so he
sent the car into the water to be with its rightful owner. This is a reference to the beginning of the
story when Lyman mentioned that his brother became the rightful owner "until his boots filled with
water on a windy night"(Erdrich, 103).
Henry 's worn clothing, Bonita 's photo, and Henry 's boots were all used for symbolism in this story.

The Red Convertible By Louise Erdich
Author Louise Erdich is famous for composing short stories about Native Americans due to cultural
and identity ties to the group. The story "The Red Convertible" depicts joyful and fond memories
shared between two brothers, named Lyman and Henry. However, towards the end of the story, a
devastating calamity befalls on one of the brothers. This story emphasizes how the two brothers
went through difficulty stages and changes that challenged their coping mechanism. The red
convertible had a positive influence on the two brothers. The red convertible united the two brothers
since it was there means of travelling around the world together, forming a close bond and enjoying
each other's company. However, all the joyous moment came to an end with the impact of war on
Henry's mental health which caused him to commit suicide. The effect of war on Henry cut the
connection between the two brothers, causing both of them to experience pain. Lyman, who is the
younger brother, never had a problem coming up with money. He excelled in every job he took upon
himself. At the age of fifteen he was working as a dishwasher at a café, but at the age of sixteen he
owned the shop. "It wasn 't long before the whole thing was mine" (103). In this quotation we can

Symbolism in the Red Convertible
October 1st, 2012 Symbolism in the Red Convertible In writing, authors use symbolism to relay a
deeper meaning to what they actually write. This technique captures important elements and gives
the reader an idea of the theme of the story without the author directly telling them. Louise Erdrich
uses symbolism to help emphasize and reveal the themes and message of her stories. "The Red
Convertible," by Erdrich, is a story about brotherly love as the highest value between two brothers,
Lyman and Henry, and also about the difficulties veterans of war and their families face at post–war
times. Symbolism plays a big part in this story, revealing the hardships Henry brings home from the
battlefields of Vietnam, and to show Lyman's difficulties ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The car portrays the destroyed relationship between Henry and Lyman. And in response, Henry
repairs the car, putting the last of his soul into the car. He remembers the condition the car and
himself was in before the war and is concerned. Eventually Henry realizes he could not fix himself.
This reflects the concerns that many soldiers had coming home regarding the futures of their
relationships and how they feared it would just be another casualty of the war, which many were,
including Henry and Lyman's. He uses the fixed convertible to save his love for his brother. Later
when Henry tells Lyman to take care of the car, both brothers understood that Henry was preparing
for death. He could not leave the world with the car and his relationship with his brother broken, and
fixes the car as his last shot to save both. When the car was finished and He and Lyman went on one
more trip, he was ready to die. Lyman saw the car more as an instrument to try and return his brother
to the way he used to be before the war. But once Henry drowns and dies, the car is useless to him.
There is symbolism in the short story that reflects Native American culture in the modern world.
Lyman and Henry go on trips for months, travelling the country. These trips could represent the
nomadic lifestyle of early Native Americans. At the end of the story, before Henry

The Red Convertible Analysis
In the story "The Red Convertible" Louise Erdrich tells us about a young boy and his brother's
adventure. Lyman pushed the car into the water because it held memories that would only cause him
more pain if he were to have kept it. In his getting rid of the things that made grieving even more
painful pushing the car into the water dissolved the times it held of happiness he had shared with his
brother in a more physical rather than mental way.
The time the brother's spent that summer trip with the red convertible created bonds that were
thought to be irreversible. Lyman noticed they "made most of the trip, that summer, without putting
up the car hood at all. [They] got home just in time, it turned out, for the army to remember Henry
had signed up to join it." (Erdrich 1075) The boys were so caught up in their trip they neglected to
realize that Henry had signed up for the war. Usually that's not something so easily forgotten. All of
the happy times occurring must have pushed it out of his train of thought in order to make room for
the memories. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He "Then I thought about the car. Henry had not even looked at the car since he'd gotten home...
[He] thought the car might bring the old Henry back somehow." (Erdrich 1076) In this he even
shows how he believes the ties that his brother and the car have might be strong enough to make
Henry remember his old self. Then with remembering these memories of the trip that summer he
would be the old Henry again. When Henry finally fixed the red convertible from Lyman's
destruction "He just said 'lets go that that shitbox for a spin.' Just the way he said it made [Lyman]
think he could be coming around." (Erdrich 1077) The attempt to get Henry back to his old self
seemed to work partially. So using the car to lure him back to his old ways wasn't a bad

Symbolism In The Red Convertible
The red convertible itself is a major use of symbolism in this story. The two brothers end up buying
a car and it seems to be their way of relieving stress. "Some people hang on to details when they
travel, but we didn't let them bother us and just lived our everyday lives here to there". This proves
that the car is a source of excitement and adventure. It also becomes a symbolism of youth and
brotherhood. As the colour of the car also happens to be red, it symbolises blood– the major link of
relatives. Before Henry left to war, the car was in tip–top shape. The brothers spend most of their
summer together in the car. They go on impulsive adventures and also end up meeting Suzy along
the way. Once the days starts getting colder, they head back

The Red Convertible Summary
The Red Convertible by Louise Erdrich is a short about the lives of two Chippewa brothers living on
an Indian reservation in North Dakota. Erdrich uses the symbol of red to show emotions associated
with red and the setting which allow readers to understand the text while providing opportunity to
read a lot more into the story. Color associations varies with many different cultures. Although
Erdrich created a Native American story, she draw readers of different backgrounds to find some
relationship with colors. There are two specific connotations of the color red. The first are positive
associations which include passion, strength, and love. All these notions are seen in the story, often
connected to Lyman. Lyman is the one who is lucky and had "good luck with numbers".l. He had
passion for money and was usually strong. The readers are made to believe that Lyman have some

Blood, aggression, danger and war are some of these things. The red convertible took the two
brothers on the adventure of their lifetime to them facing war. Henry, the older brother, was
physically strong: "built like a brick outhouse"l. He was the one who was not lucky enough to get
anything good out of his strengths. Henry exemplified all these negative connotations throughout the
story. The readers are told of several events about Henry's abnormal behavior since he came home
from the war front. One of these events include the occurrence with the color TV: "once I was in the
room watching TV with Henry I looked over, and he'd bitten through his lip. Blood was going down

Within his poem he describes some of the struggles of war. He states, "Men marched asleep. Many
had lost their boots But limped on, blood shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue"(709).
He describes the overwhelming exhaustion that war takes on the human body. The body continues to
fight on and survive. He continues with, "Gas! Gas! Quick, boys!––An ecstasy of fumbling, Fitting
the clumsy helmets just in time"(709). This description allows us to realize that even when the body
was at complete exhaustion, as described earlier, the men stay vigilant at all times in order to stay
alive. At any moment death could be at their doorstep and they must be ready to combat it. Not all
men were able to react as quickly as need be in wartime, as described by, "As under a green sea, I
saw him drowning. In all my dreams before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking,

The Red Convertible Essay
Symbolism is a quintessential element in all writing, whether it is prose or a poem. "The Red
Convertible," a short story written by Louise Erdrich, tells the story of the destructive nature of war,
via the strain caused on the families from improper deconditioning. The main characters in the story,
Lyman and Henry Lamartine, are brothers that develop a seemingly inseparable bond through a car;
a red convertible. Lyman, the younger of the two was very hard–working and could always "make
money" (Erdrich 394). He manages to ascend up the employment ladder at Joliet Café from
"washing dishes" (Erdrich 394) to eventually owning the establishment. Henry was soon drafted into
the war and became a Marine. Upon returning from the Vietnam War ... Show more content on

When evaluating the parallels in the story, it is essential to note that the car portrays the condition
that the brothers are in. In this particular case, it is indicative of Henry's condition. It took a month
for the unobservant Henry to notice the damage to the car. Henry was so consumed with other
thoughts and memories that he was unable to function normally. When he finally noticed the vehicle
he proclaimed, "That red car looks like shit" (Erdrich 397) and "that car's a classic," (Erdrich 397)
which was momentous in that he was finally showing interest in something other than the television
set. Soon, Henry began to reconstruct the convertible. Upon completion Lyman thought that Henry
"could be coming around" (Erdrich 397). Henry and Lyman journeyed in the car to where Henry
would eventually take his final breath. This scene is especially crucial in understanding the
importance of the relationship of the brothers and the car. When Henry drowns, Lyman plunges the
automobile in the same waters. He placed the car in "first gear," "took his foot off the clutch," and
watched the car "plow softly into the water" (Erdrich 400). So, not only does his brother die, so does
the object that carries so much emotional weight and memories.

The Conversion Option l l
In a typical convertible bond, the bondholder is given the option to convert the bond into a specified
number of shares of stock. The conversion ratio measures the number of shares of stock for which
each bond may be exchanged. Stated differently, the market conversion value is the current value of
the shares for which the bonds can be exchanged. The conversion premium is the excess of the bond
value over the conversion value of the bond. The conversion option in a convertible bond is equity.

Convertible Bond Value and the Conversion Option
10
Determinants of Value of Conversion Option l The conversion option is a call option on the
underlying stock, and its value is therefore determined by the variables that affect call option values
–
– the underlying stock price, – the conversion ratio (which determines the strike price), – the life of
the convertible bond, – the variance in the stock price and – the level of interest rates.
11
Factors in Using Option Pricing Models to Value Convertibles and Warrants l Option pricing
models can be used to value the conversion option with three caveats –
– conversion options are long term, making the assumptions about constant variance and constant
dividend yields much shakier, – conversion options result in stock dilution, and – conversion options
are often exercised before expiration, making it dangerous to use European option pricing

This is because of the nature of Mogen's business, wherein most of the company's assets are
intangibles, which is typical of a risky company. This makes issuance of straight debt more
expensive at around 5.75%, as the market will demand higher premium.
Given the above market perception of risk and growth opportunity, issuing a convertible bond is
appropriate because it would allow the company to raise capital at more advantageous terms than it
would when it issues straight debt. Investors would be willing to supply funds at a lower rate if they
can have the opportunity to benefit from the upside potential of the stock. Hence, the value of
convertible bonds becomes insensitive to the risk of the company. Investors would not be materially
affected if the company becomes more volatile as a result of added risk in the future because the call
option value of the convertible bond will likewise increase. Upside returns due to increase in risk
will also accrue to investors holding a convertible bond, while having a downside protection
because of the part–debt nature of the convertible.
What is the method used to calculate the coupon rate?
We first derive the implied volatility of Mogen's stock using the Black–Scholes option pricing

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Foreign Currency...
With the plethora of bonds, funds, stock, etc. available in the market an individual must have
sufficient information to make better financial decisions. To make this simple let us today look at
(FCCB) foreign currency convertible bond.
So what is foreign currency convertible bond (FCCB)? To make things much simpler we have
broken the word (FCCB) foreign currency convertible bond into two simple words; foreign currency
and convertible bond.
Let us look at foreign currency, (FCCB) foreign currency convertible bond is issued in a different
currency than the issuer's domestic currency. In other words a company would issue the bond in a
different/foreign currency apart from their own national/domestic currency. Therefore the principle

The bonds can be redeemed at maturity if not converted.
Disadvantages of foreign currency convertible bond
More risk of volatility of the market as more than one economy come into picture.
There is a risk of exchange as the interest is to be paid in foreign currency. In other words if the
exchange rate increases the issuer will have to pay more to the investors.
If the stock price is lower than the redemption amount investors would seek redemption of bond
instead of conversion; this may take a toll on the earnings of the company as the company will have
to refinance to fulfil the promise of redemption made.
Foreign currency convertible bond (FCCB) remains as a liability for the company and it shrinks the
current ratio of the company.
Conclusion:
Though being in practice for a long duration, foreign currency convertible bonds (FCCB) have
become very popular while raising funds at competitive rates. In India foreign currency convertible
bonds (FCCB) are considered as foreign direct investment (FDI) by the government of India.
Foreign currency convertible bonds (FCCB) are the more modern method of raising money for the
company, which takes advantage of the economies being truly global. Also factors like government
policies and regulation, exchange rate, and cost of conversion to stock/equity may influence
investor's decision to swap foreign currency convertible bonds (FCCB) into

Theme of the Red Convertible Essay
Theme of The Red Convertible In The Red Convertible, LouiseErdrich uses the red convertible to
symbolize the theme of change in two brothers relationship. The changes in the car parallel with the
changes the brothers go through. As the car evolves, so does the relationship between Lyman and
Henry. The two brothers have a close bond until Henry is sent off to war. Upon his arrival home, the
changes in Henry and how he relates to his brother is apparent. As the short story opens, the brothers
are closely united. They purchase a red convertible together "before they had thought it over at all"

Lyman continuously reaches out to his brother, but the changes in Henry keep the two separated.
Henry returns from the war damaged not unlike the car after Lyman tries to destroy it. The relation
ship between the brothers will never return to its previous state just as the car will never be the
same. The car now comes to signify the change in the brother's relationship. When Henry drowns
himself in the river, Lyman lets the car go with them. Henry knows life will never be the same and
neither will his feelings about the car. The car will now only trigger the raw emotions of his
brother's transformation and his death, instead of the carefree life he once had with a close brother.
The car comes to symbolize death and the death of the close relationship between the to brothers.
When Lyman lets go of the car, he is also letting go of his innocence. "The Red Convertible" shows
the evolution of two brother's relationship. Edrich cleverly uses the red convertible to symbolize the
changes in the brother's relationship, turning a seemingly simple short story into a complex ride of
emotions. The car that is a "calm and gleaming" (437) token of close brotherly love turns into a
painful reminder of change. Its descent into a raging river coincides with the end of a brother's life

The Red Convertible Analysis
The red convertible, by Louise Erdrich, is a story about two brothers and their experiences together
before one of them goes to war and after one of them goes to war. The central idea of the story is
traumatic events can change people permanently. The story takes place in the red convertible, on the
reservation, and at the river. The setting relates to the central idea of the story because we can see
the effect of the war on the bother before and after, in the red convertible, on the reservation, and at
the river. In the red convertible the brothers go on a trip before and after the war. The first road trip
the brothers where happy and where having fun. The book states, "Some people hang on the detail
when they travel, but we didn't let them bother us and just lived our everyday lives here to there."
This quote shows that the brothers didn't care where they were going it was about the trip and being
together not about what they were doing. Then when the brothers go on a road trip after he as gone
to war the attitude is a lot different. The book states, "It's not that he smiled again or even joked."
The brother seemed to not be having as much fun after he had gone to the war and no matter how
much his brother tried to help him it wouldn't work. The setting of the red convertible really
expressed the central idea but so did the setting of the reservation. ... Show more content on

In "The Red Convertible" we get to see the change in Henry, Lyman's brother, from Lyman's view.
Henry's actions are expressed prior to deploying as relaxed and carefree. Erdrich asserts, "I
remember I laid under those trees and it was comfortable. So comfortable...Henry was asleep with
his arms thrown wide. Later on, he woke up and we started driving again" (135). Henry is in a
complete relaxed state. Henry looking up at the sky shows the limitless amount of possibilities the
two of them can accomplish. It is shown by the bizarre places the two travels together. Thus,
although the convertible retains its association with Henry's calm personality, it also becomes
associated with the carefree bond between the two brothers (Sutton). Once Henry returns his brother
notices an immediate change in his behavior. Henry was not the same person anymore. Erdrich says,
"I looked over, and he'd bitten through his lip. Blood was going down his chin...He rushed from his
chair and shoved me out of the way, against the wall. I told myself he didn't know what he was
doing" (137). Lyman is trying to help his brother return to his normal state before he left but isn't
taking it in a serious manner. He avoids getting his brother the proper treatment from a medical

his brother will never be the same. Lyman's viewpoint shows us how the war has changed his

The Red Convertible By Louise Erdrich
In the short story "The Red Convertible," by Louise Erdrich, there are multiple literary devices used
throughout. However, Erdrich most commonly utilizes theme and symbolism. She uses certain
themes throughout most of her work, as noted by Keri L. Overall in a literary analysis. "Indeed, the
themes of Erdrich's stories range from the effects of war on families and personal identity to loss of
heritage and family and personal relationships." Erdrich also employs the use of symbolism in this
story, to great effect. Furthermore, the two most important themes in this story are Brotherhood and
War–time trauma, while the most important symbol is the red convertible. The first theme that is
prevalent throughout the story is Brotherhood. The focus of "The Red Convertible ' ' is the
relationship between Henry and Lyman. Lyman tells this story in order to honor his brother's
memory. Erdrich's piece is told from Lyman 's point of view, so the reader does not know Henry 's
motivations or thoughts. However, his behavior shows that he loved his brother dearly, and held
their relationship in high regard. When Henry was preparing to depart for Vietnam, he chose to give
Lyman the car that had been a vessel of happiness for them both. One can deduce from this action
that Henry did not know if he would survive the war. After Henry came back from Vietnam, he was
a polar opposite of the man he used to be. When Lyman damaged the car so that Henry would have
to fix it, he understood what Lyman

Memorable moments last a lifetime within the heart and often encourage new memories to be made
to be just as everlasting. Life often gives the individual an array of events followed by a variety of
emotions and lasting event but it is not always as delightful as the ones that make a last impression.
"The Red Convertible" is about the memorable moments that the Lamartine brothers share together
based on their pride for their red convertible. The shared love for the red convertible inspired the
lasting memories for the Lamartine brothers; However, precisely like life, the memories were sewn
into the brother's hearts and life continues. Henry Lamartine was drafted into the Vietnam War,
while Lyman Lamartine stayed behind on the Indian reservation. The draft will forever change the
brothers, and only the memories from the red convertible will be left behind. Louise Erdrich
embraces an intimate relationship between the Lamartine brothers which is supported by the
symbolism of a red convertible however, the connection changes as life takes its negative effect on

The Red Convertible Vanished Brotherhood
In the short story "The Red Convertible" you will find some important elements that are integral to
the support and development of the theme brotherhood. First, you will see how the road trip gives a
lesson in the story. Second, you will discover how the war affected the relationship of Lyman and
Henry. Finally, you will understand the symbolism of the red convertible and the link it has between
both brothers. One important element that has a powerful lesson in the story is the road trip. While
Lyman and Henry went on a drive one afternoon, they met a girl named Susy in the middle of the
road. Susy had her hair in buns around her ears and was very short. They let her jump in the car and

From this point on, Henry did not even look at the car that he and Lyman owned together.
Obviously, they did not travel anymore or went anywhere together as before. This bothered Lyman,
and attempting to bring him back to his own self, Lyman destroys the car and waits for Henry to find
it. When Henry finds it, he begins fixing it, and as months passed by, he begins to act a little
different. He was not as jumpy and disturbed as he was when he returned from the war. He finishes
with the car, leaving it almost as good as it was before. He invites Lyman to go on a ride as they
used to do before. They arrived at the river and begin drinking beer and laughing together. All of a
sudden, Henry says, "got to cool me off" and troughs himself in the river, and let the current take
him. Before he was gone he said, "My boots are filling". He probably meant that he was tired of
living, waiting for his dreams and hopes to be fulfilled and being stuck in two different cultures.
After Henry says this, he finally disappears, separating what was once a relationship between two
brothers.
The car is one of the most important elements that develops and supports the theme brotherhood.
The car is a symbol that is meant to show Lyman and Henry's close bond, and it holds the key to
their definitive separation. The red convertible is also a symbol of success, and a connection to the
white world for both Henry and Lyman " I was

‘’Where Are You Going Where Have You Been”
INTRODUCTION:
"Where Are You Going Where Have You Been?" by Joyce Carol, showcases the inevitable effects of
youthful exuberance in a teenage girl. The story is a compelling tale which unveils the vulnerability
of Connie, a young teenage girl who could barely substantiate fantasy from reality. She prides
herself as a pretty girl who understands the basic principles of life. Her encounter with Arnold
Friend reveals her as someone who lacks the mental ability to make meaningful decisions and
accurate when necessary. Her desire for attention and frivolities facilitates in subjecting her as a
victim of a wicked and complex world. She is obsessed with her beauty; her desire for boys and
attention makes her pride herself as a "paragon of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The young man smiles and says to her, "I ain't late, am I", Connie responds telling him that she does
not know him. She likes his dress sense, but she plays down notions of being interested in him. She
is careful to shows no pleasure and tells him continuously that she doesn't know him. He gets off his
car and points to the word painted on the door of his gold convertible car. The word reads;
ARNOLD FRIEND, which was written nest to a "grinning face that reminded Connie of a pumpkin,
except it wore sunglasses." With Arnold Friend is another weird looking fellow who hangs up his
radio up his shoulder and stares at the unknown. He introduces him as Ellie Oscar. He also points to
a secret code to her; but she makes nothing out of it. She laughs at the word written at the left rear
fender which has been smashed; which reads "DONE BY CRAZY WOMAN DRIVER. He is
delighted to make her laugh. He startles her when he calls her by name and demands that she hops
into the car for a trilling ride with him. Connie tells him she is busy with domestic activity. He
draws an X sign in the air asks her if she knows what the sign entails. Connie thinks she recognizes
the sign but does not recall how or from were. When Arnold took off his glasses, she notices he is
advance in age; and demands to know how old he is; he stops grinning and says he is the same age
as her or a little older than her. She immediately knows he is not saying the truth.

Red Convertible Criticism
Aaron Stanfield
Mrs. Guerin
English 102–109
21 October 2014
The Red Convertible Criticism's In Laura Kryhoski's critical analysis of "The Red Convertible," she
points out several elements often overlooked when reading the short story for the first time. At first
glance, the story appears "definably tragic" (Kryhoski). Kryhoski claims that if the reader were to
investigate author Louise Erdrich's background, the story would seem less of a tragedy and more of
a reflection of her upbringing. As the narrator in "The Red Convertible," Lyman seems to be
recalling the tale from his memories rather than telling the events as they occur. Lyman focuses
more on the distinct detail of each moment than he does on the bigger picture. This invokes the

The first journey is the trip he and his brother, Lyman, took to purchase the red convertible. The
second is his journey to Vietnam to fight in the war. Finally, the third journey is the trip he and
Lyman took to the Red River where he ultimately committed suicide. Korb suggests that while
Lyman has a natural talent for making money on the reservation, he still "experienced his share of
difficulties" (Korb ). These difficulties are potentially the reasons behind Henry and Lyman feeling
the need to escape by means of the red convertible. The red convertible is the brothers' ticket to a
life off the reservation and a way for them to experience joy, peace, and adventure different to what
they are accustomed. Korb specifically puts emphasis on Henry and Lyman's trip to Alaska by
stating that this particular trip was idyllic and felt as though it was a "pleasant dream world" (Korb).
After a pleasurable time spent in Alaska, the brothers' head back south when winter begins. After he
has completed his first journey, Henry embarks on his second to Vietnam. The Henry that leaves the
reservation to fight in the war is not the same Henry who returns three years later. "Even the red
convertible brings no life to Henry," Korb claims. The author focuses on Lyman's attempts to bring
his brother around to his old self, including the destruction of the red convertible. On the final
journey, the trip to the Red River, Lyman is hopeful and believes that his brother is finally turning a
new leaf. However, Henry is still just as haunted and troubled as before. Korb reinforces that losing
the red convertible is losing the ability to experience freedom and joy, which explains why Lyman
refuses to accept the car when Henry offers it to him. Lyman tries to "beat feelings of hope back into
his brother"

  • 1. Cases in Finance Case 41, MoGen, Inc. – Finance 675 David Biggs, Amanda McAllaster, Jake Unruh, Andy Rao Background Information MoGen is a leading company in the recently surging biotechnology industry that specializes in human therapeutic drugs that help offset the damaging effects of chemotherapy for cancer patients. The business model for all biotech companies is fairly similar: through extensive R&D, create new medical drugs, obtain FDA approval and product patents and launch them into the market. In order to achieve profitability and increase the likelihood of FDA approval for their various projects, MoGen must ensure a consistent supply of cash to fund R&D efforts and maintain financial flexibility in the face of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since repurchases reduce the shares outstanding, it kept the EPS relatively steady despite the dilutive effects on EPS from the convertibles. The share repurchase also provided a positive signal to the market that the company viewed its stock as undervalued, a strategy that could encourage investors to increase their positions in the firm. Fund Usage and Firm Needs in 2006 By 2006, MoGen needed an additional $10 billion of funding for various projects that aimed to improve manufacturing capacity and processes, formulation, fill and finish capacity, investment in R&D and late–stage trials, acquisition and licensing, and stock repurchasing. To improve manufacturing processes and reduce supply risks, the firm estimated a $1 billion R&D, a vital component of the business needed a 30% increase in funding, totaling to an additional $3 billion. Mogen was also looking to acquire Genix, Inc. and their intellectual capital for approximately $2 billion. Finally, the management team also wanted to maintain the share repurchase program and expected to spend $3.5 billion. All of these projects add up to a total of roughly $10 billion. Internally generated funds were estimated to be $5 billion from net income and depreciation, requiring MoGen to find the other half of the funding from a different source. In search of additional funding, MoGen considered raising the $5 billion by issuing

Individual's life choice is generally controlled, learned, influenced, and raised by the cultural background. Therefore, he plans to mess up the car because of an earlier conversation with his family which expressed that the doctors could not cure him "they will just give them drugs (5)." This shows the lack of faith the Indians has in doctors. As a result, he destroyed the car he kept in tip top condition. Erdrich describes Lyman ruining the car, he "whacked it up, bent the pipe tail, ripped the muffler loose...I made it look as beat up as I could" (5). Fortunately, his plan workes. It took Henry over a month to find the car, but Lyman was okay with that because it was getting warm enough for Henry to start working on it. Lyman states that "Henry was better than he had been before" but that is an understatement. Even though, "he ate more slowly and didn't jump around during a meal... or look out the window (5)", Lyman was unsatisfied with the results. He states "feeling down in the dumps about his brother, before the war they had always been henry and Lyman, but he was such a loner now. (6)" His very plan was crumbling before his eyes. • 18. Why A Corporation May Consider Convertible Bond Issuance There are number reasons a corporation may consider convertible bond issuance. The instrument itself is a bond that may be converted to another type of security at the company that issued the bond. Converting such an item is all left up to the discretion of the bondholder. The reason for a company to want to issue such an item of course would always be in the best interest of the company itself for doing so. Convertible bonds are considered what is known as a hybrid security where it is considered to be both debt and equity by the issuing company (Saunders & Cornett, 2015, p. 185). One of the reasons the company would want to issue convertible bond would be is the yield that they have to pay generally lower than that of a non–convertible bond. The reason the rate is lower is important because it is indeed a hybrid security where gives the bondholder an investment opportunity in the company in the future, hence making the instrument more attractive to investors (Badraoui & Ouenniche, 2014). Since the instrument is more attractive, a lower yield may be offered that will still garner and peak invested interest in the product (Saunders & Cornett, 2015). Pricing is usually set so as not in the best interest to convert the bond stock unless the company sees an increase of the stock price in the range from 15 to 20 percent from the time the bond was issued (Saunders & Cornett, 2015, p. 187). Ford has always made exceptional vehicles. The 2001 Mustang convertible is no different. Much like where its name is derived from, it seems to gallop through town stealing the attention of all who witness the glistening green tint. It is not a statement; it is not a cry for attention. Simply put: it is youth. Before embarking, the top is set down like the curtain of a play waiting to burst with art. Setting off with the sun behind his back, he reminds himself that he will grow old. Following aspirations requires something much more dependable. A man's first car will simply not do the trick. Another must step in and assume the reigns. Driving effortlessly into the twilight, he begins to wonder how this car will affect its next owner. That new handler will clench the door handle with an excitement that can not be measured. The transition into the drivers seat is so smooth and mesmerizing. He will become a new man. Gripping the coarse steering wheel, the feeling of euphoria carries him over to the shifter, the sense of power is running through his veins. Shifting into drive is a pleasure he respects each and every time. In the story "The Red Convertible" by Louise Erdrich, Lyman and Henry have a special bond. This bond is emphasized in the red convertible because it symbolizes the connection that both brothers have with one another. After Henry goes off to war Lyman takes care of the car. Lyman cares for the car as if he were trying to preserve the bond that he and Henry had. Furthermore, Lyman knows to some extent that the bond between his brother and him is fragile because Henry has been gone away to war. The color of the car which is red has a double meaning which includes emotions such as the love that exists between the brothers, but also disaster like war. The war separated them both emotionally and physically, but despite this, at the end, they were able to relive the old days when their bond was at its strongest. The characters in this short story have an object which they seem to both enjoy and use to bond with one another by taking trips. To this day, I have put more time, effort and money into my Jeep than it is actually worth. So why continue to restore this beautifully ancient beast? To my surprise, my father pretty much narrowed the selection process down for me, providing me with a specific list of Craigslist adds that he had compiled during his work day. After browsing this selection, I had settled on a 1987 light blue Jeep Wrangler, with a soft top and a sport roll cage. This jeep came with the legendary fuel injected 4.0 Liter, 6 cylinder engine, aptly nicknamed the "Tank", due to its sturdy construction of cast iron. If a conversion ratio, rather than a conversion price, is specified, the effective price of stock to the bondholder may be determined by dividing the par value of the bond by the number of shares exchangeable for one bond. The conversion price, which is determined when the bonds are 30%, is usually from 10 to 20 percent above the prevailing market price of the common stock at the time of issue. Both the issuing form and the investor expect that the market price of the stock will rise above the conversion price, and that the conversion privilege will then be exercised by most or all bondholders. This technique captures important elements and gives the reader an idea of the theme of the story without the author directly telling them. Louise Erdrich uses symbolism to help emphasize and reveal the themes and message of her stories. "The Red Convertible," by Erdrich, is a story about brotherly love as the highest value between two brothers, Lyman and Henry, and also about the difficulties veterans of war and their families face at post–war times. Symbolism plays a big part in this story, revealing the hardships Henry brings home from the battlefields of Vietnam, and to show Lyman's difficulties ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The car portrays the destroyed relationship between Henry and Lyman. And in response, Henry repairs the car, putting the last of his soul into the car. He remembers the condition the car and himself was in before the war and is concerned. Eventually Henry realizes he could not fix himself. This reflects the concerns that many soldiers had coming home regarding the futures of their relationships and how they feared it would just be another casualty of the war, which many were, including Henry and Lyman's. He uses the fixed convertible to save his love for his brother. Later when Henry tells Lyman to take care of the car, both brothers understood that Henry was preparing for death. He could not leave the world with the car and his relationship with his brother broken, and fixes the car as his last shot to save both. When the car was finished and He and Lyman went on one more trip, he was ready to die. Lyman saw the car more as an instrument to try and return his brother to the way he used to be before the war. But once Henry drowns and dies, the car is useless to him. There is symbolism in the short story that reflects Native American culture in the modern world. • 88. The Red Convertible Analysis In the story "The Red Convertible" Louise Erdrich tells us about a young boy and his brother's adventure. Lyman pushed the car into the water because it held memories that would only cause him more pain if he were to have kept it. In his getting rid of the things that made grieving even more painful pushing the car into the water dissolved the times it held of happiness he had shared with his brother in a more physical rather than mental way. The time the brother's spent that summer trip with the red convertible created bonds that were thought to be irreversible. Lyman noticed they "made most of the trip, that summer, without putting up the car hood at all. [They] got home just in time, it turned out, for the army to remember Henry had signed up to join it." (Erdrich 1075) The boys were so caught up in their trip they neglected to realize that Henry had signed up for the war. Usually that's not something so easily forgotten. All of the happy times occurring must have pushed it out of his train of thought in order to make room for the memories. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He "Then I thought about the car. Then with remembering these memories of the trip that summer he would be the old Henry again. When Henry finally fixed the red convertible from Lyman's destruction "He just said 'lets go that that shitbox for a spin.' Just the way he said it made [Lyman] think he could be coming around." "Some people hang on to details when they travel, but we didn't let them bother us and just lived our everyday lives here to there". This proves that the car is a source of excitement and adventure. It also becomes a symbolism of youth and brotherhood. As the colour of the car also happens to be red, it symbolises blood– the major link of relatives. Veterans returning home from combat experience are faced with the difficult task of coping with post–traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its side effects, because of their experiences in combat. In Lousie Erdrich's, "The Red Convertible" and Wilfred Owen's, "Dulce et Decorum Est" we can see how and why a returning veteran, such as Henry, would have trouble readapting to his former environment and handling the symptoms of PTSD. The body continues to fight on and survive. He continues with, "Gas! Gas! Quick, boys!––An ecstasy of fumbling, Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time"(709). This description allows us to realize that even when the body was at complete exhaustion, as described earlier, the men stay vigilant at all times in order to stay alive. At any moment death could be at their doorstep and they must be ready to combat it. Not all men were able to react as quickly as need be in wartime, as described by, "As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. • 104. The Red Convertible Essay Symbolism is a quintessential element in all writing, whether it is prose or a poem. "The Red Convertible," a short story written by Louise Erdrich, tells the story of the destructive nature of war, via the strain caused on the families from improper deconditioning. The main characters in the story, Lyman and Henry Lamartine, are brothers that develop a seemingly inseparable bond through a car; a red convertible. Lyman, the younger of the two was very hard–working and could always "make money" (Erdrich 394). He manages to ascend up the employment ladder at Joliet Café from "washing dishes" (Erdrich 394) to eventually owning the establishment. Henry was soon drafted into the war and became a Marine. Upon returning from the Vietnam War ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When evaluating the parallels in the story, it is essential to note that the car portrays the condition that the brothers are in. In this particular case, it is indicative of Henry's condition. It took a month for the unobservant Henry to notice the damage to the car. Henry was so consumed with other thoughts and memories that he was unable to function normally. When he finally noticed the vehicle he proclaimed, "That red car looks like shit" (Erdrich 397) and "that car's a classic," (Erdrich 397) which was momentous in that he was finally showing interest in something other than the television set. Soon, Henry began to reconstruct the convertible. Upon completion Lyman thought that Henry "could be coming around" (Erdrich 397). Henry and Lyman journeyed in the car to where Henry would eventually take his final breath. This scene is especially crucial in understanding the importance of the relationship of the brothers and the car. When Henry drowns, Lyman plunges the automobile in the same waters. He placed the car in "first gear," "took his foot off the clutch," and watched the car "plow softly into the water" (Erdrich 400). So, not only does his brother die, so does the object that carries so much emotional weight and memories. We deemed it appropriate to walk you through the analytical process in coming up with the right mix of conversion premium and coupon rate. We initially consider a conversion premium of 25% and determine its corresponding coupon rate. We then explore the appropriateness of such a premium and explore other conversion premium–coupon rate combinations and determine which combination would be optimal for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is because of the nature of Mogen's business, wherein most of the company's assets are intangibles, which is typical of a risky company. This makes issuance of straight debt more expensive at around 5.75%, as the market will demand higher premium. Given the above market perception of risk and growth opportunity, issuing a convertible bond is appropriate because it would allow the company to raise capital at more advantageous terms than it would when it issues straight debt. Investors would be willing to supply funds at a lower rate if they can have the opportunity to benefit from the upside potential of the stock. Hence, the value of convertible bonds becomes insensitive to the risk of the company. Investors would not be materially affected if the company becomes more volatile as a result of added risk in the future because the call option value of the convertible bond will likewise increase. Upside returns due to increase in risk will also accrue to investors holding a convertible bond, while having a downside protection because of the part–debt nature of the convertible. What is the method used to calculate the coupon rate? We first derive the implied volatility of Mogen's stock using the Black–Scholes option pricing model The implied volatility of each of the eight outstanding options on MoGen's stock was obtained using the following information on Exhibit 3 – type of option, days to maturity in years, exercise price and closing

There is a risk of exchange as the interest is to be paid in foreign currency. In other words if the exchange rate increases the issuer will have to pay more to the investors. If the stock price is lower than the redemption amount investors would seek redemption of bond instead of conversion; this may take a toll on the earnings of the company as the company will have to refinance to fulfil the promise of redemption made. However, Erdrich most commonly utilizes theme and symbolism. She uses certain themes throughout most of her work, as noted by Keri L. Overall in a literary analysis. "Indeed, the themes of Erdrich's stories range from the effects of war on families and personal identity to loss of heritage and family and personal relationships." Erdrich also employs the use of symbolism in this story, to great effect. Furthermore, the two most important themes in this story are Brotherhood and War–time trauma, while the most important symbol is the red convertible. The first theme that is prevalent throughout the story is Brotherhood. The focus of "The Red Convertible ' ' is the relationship between Henry and Lyman. Lyman tells this story in order to honor his brother's memory. Erdrich's piece is told from Lyman 's point of view, so the reader does not know Henry 's motivations or thoughts. When Henry finds it, he begins fixing it, and as months passed by, he begins to act a little different. He was not as jumpy and disturbed as he was when he returned from the war. He finishes with the car, leaving it almost as good as it was before. He invites Lyman to go on a ride as they used to do before. They arrived at the river and begin drinking beer and laughing together. All of a sudden, Henry says, "got to cool me off" and troughs himself in the river, and let the current take him. Red Convertible Criticism Aaron Stanfield Mrs. Guerin English 102–109 21 October 2014 The Red Convertible Criticism's In Laura Kryhoski's critical analysis of "The Red Convertible," she points out several elements often overlooked when reading the short story for the first time. At first glance, the story appears "definably tragic" (Kryhoski). Kryhoski claims that if the reader were to investigate author Louise Erdrich's background, the story would seem less of a tragedy and more of a reflection of her upbringing. After a pleasurable time spent in Alaska, the brothers' head back south when winter begins. After he has completed his first journey, Henry embarks on his second to Vietnam. The Henry that leaves the reservation to fight in the war is not the same Henry who returns three years later. "Even the red convertible brings no life to Henry," Korb claims. The author focuses on Lyman's attempts to bring his brother around to his old self, including the destruction of the red convertible. On the final journey, the trip to the Red River, Lyman is hopeful and believes that his brother is finally turning a new leaf. However, Henry is still just as haunted and troubled as before. Korb reinforces that losing the red convertible is losing the ability to experience freedom and joy, which explains why Lyman refuses to accept the car when Henry offers it to him. Lyman tries to "beat feelings of hope back into his brother" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
