The state of Gujarat in India is located on the west coast of the country. Having earned the
distinction of being the most industrialised state in India, Gujarat also has a rich tradition of
history, culture and crafts. Even with extensive modernisation, Gujarat and its people have been
able to preserve the rich culture and tradition of the ancient past.
The diverse ethnic
groups constituting the
population of Gujarat
comprise the cultural
diversity of the state.
The varied culture of
Gujarat is reflected in
the unique characteristic
traits of the people of
different parts of the
state.
Child shows the man as
morning shows the day!
Children are the key to
influencing mindsets and
bringing about behavioural
changes. Across the
pipeline route, areas are
plagued by low levels of
immunization coverage of
only 34%. Awareness about
hygiene and sanitation is as
low as 21% in certain areas.

Health and Sanitation
The health and sanitation
programmes along the pipeline
route in Gujarat have been
designed innovatively. The
programmes target children
through application and
introduction of issues and
concepts through theatre, painting
and exhibitions travelling to
schools across villages. As a part
of the endeavour, locations are
also chosen in a school or a
village and given a makeover by
the children through cleaning and
wall painting.
The approach is multi pronged as
it also targets the mothers through
the child and maternal health
programme, hygiene concepts
through water and sanitation
initiatives, and health camps which could be attended by villagers.
Cairn India in partnership with local NGOs is involved in all aspects of the initiatives – from
community awareness programmes to capacity building trainings for the service providers to
conceptualising and developing interesting communication material and building channels of
information dissemination on the issues.
