• The rise of environmental awareness since the
seventies facilitated the application of `sustainable´
policies in all areas -from international to local-.
• Local Agenda 21 as methodology for achieving
sustainable development at the local level, has been
implemented for almost 20 years in more than 2,800
European towns, of which almost 1,200 are Spanish.
