2. Definition of disorder
• Acne is a common skin disease
characterized by pimples on the face,
chest, and back. It occurs when the pores
of the skin become clogged with oil, dead
skin bacteria.
3. Symptoms
• Blackheads and Whiteheads (below the
skin surface)
• Nodules – large and firm lumps below the
skin
• Pustules – yellowish lumps on the skin
surface, pus filled
• Pimples – red spots with no pus – a
symptom of non-inflammatory acne
• Dry, pink and itchy skin
4. TREATMENT
• Acne treatments work by reducing oil
production, speeding up skin cell
turnover, fighting bacterial infection,
reducing the inflammation or doing all
four.
5. STATISTICS
• 85% of all U.S. teenagers are affected.
• 25% of these will have permanent scars.
• 20% of all adults have active acne.
• 60 million Americans have active acne.
