 The word Music derives from Greek word mousike
which means art of the Muses.
 Music is an art form whose medium is sound and
silence.
 Its common elements
are pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and the sonic
qualities of timbre and texture.
 The creation, performance, significance, and even
the definition of music vary according to culture
and social context.
 Music is a fundamental channel of communication:
 It provides a means by which people can share
emotions, intentions and meanings even though their
spoken languages may be mutually incomprehensible.
 It can also provide a vital lifeline to human interaction for
those whose special needs make other means of
communication difficult.
 Music can exert powerful physical effects, can produce
deep and profound emotions within us.

 Two types of Identities
1. Identities in Music (IIM) deals with those
aspects of musical identities that are socially
defined within given cultural roles and musical
categories. As we shall see, the ways in which
young people do or do not define themselves as
musicians.
2. Music in Identities (MII) focuses on how we
use music as a means or resource for developing
other aspects of our individual identities.

 It’s no secret that since the music industry has become
heavily altered by the digital age, the internet has in some
ways been a blessing and a curse for the business.
 For example social media outlets have allowed music
labels and artists to connect and reach audiences in an era
in which traditional routes of radio, TV and print are
having limited effect.
 Social media platforms are providing artists and labels
with interesting opportunities to share their music and
create a more personal connection with fans.
YouTube
 The pop charts today are littered with artists that have
been discovered via YouTube. for example Justin Bieber
and Conor Maynard are prodigies of the video sharing
platform.
 Viral videos have made stars of many musicians;
YouTube has the potential for such mass responses,
especially when paired with unique videos.
 For example videos from Psy, Baauer (of Harlem Shake
Fame) and Macklemore have led to chart-topping
success.

platforms-that-are-helping-the-music-industry/
MySpace
 The core aim of MySpace as a platform is to provide the
user with a music-centric experience..
 The redesigned MySpace opened to the public earlier this
year, and is now both a social network and a hub for
music destination.
 MySpace as a platform is largely responsible for the
change in the way the public interact with artists.
 MySpace unlike other social media platforms does not
distinguish between whether your friendship with a
profile is with a person or a band.
 This allowed for fans and artists to interact between each
other.
http://blog.immediatefuture.co.uk/3-social-media-platforms-that-
are-helping-the-music-industry/
Twitter
 Looking into the future, Twitter is in the midst of
releasing a music-specific app using technology
from music discovery app “We Are Hunted”.
 Twitter has largely been used as a way for artists to
interact with fans, the micro-blogging platform is making
its way into music.
 Twitter has also reportedly struck a deal with Vevo in
which Vevo’ content will be offered via the social
network’s music app.
 This development will provide yet another way for
people to discover and share music.
http://blog.immediatefuture.co.uk/3-social-media-platforms-that-
are-helping-the-music-industry/
 Music In the past was developed to convey
feelings and emotions through the notes of
the music.
 Words and lyrics explaining life and love
were used often.
 In the past, music was discovered through
live shows and the radio.
 Music producers had to work hard to find the
next “big thing” and had to spread the word
through the radio and “word of mouth”
 A few music genres such as
country, jazz, rock and even classical were
mainly heard. These are the genres that
started whole new branches of music.
 Today’s music genres are vast and
complex, mixing older types, into new genres
of music.
 The types of music that are getting the most
attention is now on pop, rap, rock and
orchestral pieces.
 Music is used everyday and is heard in
different forms. It can be heard in concerts
held by the musicians. It can be heard in
video games and it can be heard as we travel
from one place to another.
 Technology is now a big part of music. It can
be used to make music, or it can be used to
let it be heard from anywhere you are.
 Autotune is a great example. Artist use this
to change their voices to suit what they want
people to hear in their music.
 Here is a website showing how many artist
have used autotune.
http://rateyourmusic.com/list/Thrashisaweso
me/artists_who_have_used_auto_tune
 Now days artists are becoming discovered
through other artists
 Also Social media is playing a huge role in
the world of music today. Artist can now
share their art pieces through Youtube and
become discovered by the people who view
their videos.
 Once someone is discovered, word spreads
fast online by people posting and sharing
links. This was how Justin Beiber was found.
vRG0
Who knows what the future holds
 New types of genres will be created and new
groups of artists will make new music to suit
what they want people want to hear.
 It could be that new artists promote
themselves and achieve power and money
online.
 More Indie bands will be noticed and talked
about online. They will be more groups
created to follow their favorite bands.
 Using the power of social networking, artist
will avoid music producers and distribute
they work online.
 News about artist and their free song
promotions will attract more fans and create
bigger fan bases.
http://www.billboard.com/articles/news
 Without the help of social media the world
would of music would be very different from
the world we have today.
 Music can create separate identities or
separate identities can make new and
creative music.
 Music is universal and can be shared and
promoted by social media sites.
 The future of music will bring new artists and
new genres that will create identities.
