Overview of Contents
Conference tracks
The competitiveness of a country, a sector or a com-
pany depends largely on its ability to innovate. This
calls for creative ideas when addressing topics that are
of central relevance for the future. What innovations
are being developed in logistics, supply chain manage-
ment and information technology?
INNOVATIONS SECTORS
Well-structured networks are a key success factor,
both in managing the complexity of flows of goods
and information and for cooperation between com-
panies and across national borders. How can these
increasingly integrated networks be efficiently con-
trolled and optimised?
NETWORKS IDEAS
Logistics is a cross-sectional function and a decisive
success factor spanning entire sectors of industry –
and it is of key importance both within companies and
as a cross-company activity. The focus is on models to
meet current logistical challenges in different sectors.
Social change, scientific progress and business success
all begin with an idea and the courage to put this idea
into practice. The sequences will present future-ori-
ented projects from the media, research, industry and
humanitarian logistics.

30th International Supply Chain Conference
Albert Einstein is supposed to have said he wasn’t interested in the past but in the
future, because that’s where he intended to live. This would also be a good slogan
for a conference that is seen as an important source of ideas and innovations.
But experience tells us that, on its own, looking to the future is not enough. The
future is always rooted in the past.
This year, we will be able to look back on 30 years of the conference and 35 years
of BVL. Our community is more future-oriented than ever before and can draw on
well-founded expertise and wide-ranging experience. Together with inspiration
from new stimuli and the development of new ideas, this is what drives innovation
– in global business processes, social communication and sustainable business
activities. Supply chain management and logistics are and will remain key topics in
all fields of economy and society.
The economic outlook is improving and, as a result, the logistics sector is also
experiencing a steady uptrend driven by the optimistic mood, even if events in the
field of monetary and fiscal policy, energy and raw material prices and the eco-
nomic situation in Europe act as ever-present reminders that caution is the order
of the day. The active exchange of knowledge, the interpretation of trends based
on shared experience and the joint development of strategies are, as always, both
important and necessary to generate “Inspiration, Ideas, Innovation”.

Inspiration, Ideas, Innovation
This “milestone” anniversary is the ideal opportunity to look back at the develop-
ment of logistics and at the key stimuli generated every year by the International
Supply Chain Conference. The presentations and discussions will focus on the inno-
vative drive of the logistics sector. “Inspiration, Ideas, Innovation” is the core theme
in an era characterised by rapid change, high uncertainty and great volatility – but
also by dynamic concepts and creative drive.

Mastering Challenges through Transparency and Individual Responsibility
The automotive industry is operating in an increasingly complex and global envi-
ronment. From the point of view of supply chain management, this means that the
entire supply chain must be as transparent as necessary. The ever more complex work
processes are increasingly being managed through self-organisation to ensure that
each participant in these processes can make their own individual contribution.

Production Driven by Perfection and Passion
One of the factors behind the success of Porsche AG is a production concept that is
systematically geared towards quality and efficiency – and this includes the com-
pany’s tailored logistics operations. Production at Porsche is a byword for the ideal
combination of craftsmanship and series production. This is key to producing pre-
mium sports cars with a high level of customisation driven by perfection and pas-
sion.

Humans and Robots Working Together – A New Industrial Revolution?
The availability of new key technologies driving far-reaching economic and social change
is the hallmark of an industrial revolution. Production operations in Europe are often
characterised by front-to-end automation, where humans are primarily responsible for
planning and maintenance tasks but are not involved in the actual production process.
The goal for the future is to introduce a “sliding automation scale” in which humans and
robots work hand in hand and complement each other.

Global Logistics Trends and Strategies
In a global market network the winners are those with the best relationships who
are able to work collaboratively with the best players. This is true not only for verti-
cal relationships with suppliers, but also for horizontal relationships with other com-
panies. It is not sufficient anymore to think in terms of one’s own sphere of influence,
as the unit of competition is now the global network. What are top-performing com-
panies from different sectors doing to gain a competitive advantage?

Customer companies expect logistics and supply chain management
to continuously evolve and develop new solutions. BVL has been reg-
ularly publishing the study “Trends and Strategies in Logistics and
Supply Chain Management” since 1988. The findings of this year’s
study are based on a worldwide survey with over 1,700 responding
specialists and decision-makers. What are the current challenges
companies face? What are the strategies of best-in-class companies
from different regions?

Big Data – Using Knowledge Effectively
A high volume of data is generated every day in both the private
and business sphere, but around 80% of it remains unused. Intelli-
gent solutions like “big data evaluations” are needed to master this
glut of information. Various technologies and methods help to struc-
ture this data and allow it to be put to good use in-house on a cross-
departmental basis. But which approaches are truly practicable
when expense and benefit are weighed against one another?

Focal Point “Contract Logistics”
The more detailed the required performance description, the
better and more effective the outcomes of an invitation to ten-
der. What difficulties are regularly encountered in cooperation
between industry and logistics service providers during the ten-
dering process? Which problems occur again and again, and how
can these problems be resolved in practice? The BVL “Contract
Logistics” working group was asked to address these issues. Ship-
pers and service providers present and discuss the findings.

Success Factor Social Media
The use of social networks for customer relationship management
holds great promise for companies in all sectors. But it is impor-
tant to ensure that this communication is the “right” communica-
tion, as this is the only way to improve service standards and avoid
“shitstorms”. Social media guidelines are often drawn up to support
employees in their interaction with customers in these modern net-
works. Are these guidelines really useful? Which approaches appear

Logistics Innovations in the Field of Medicine –
Inspiration for Other Sectors?
Life and health are things of great value that deserve the best treatment and tried-
and-tested services. How can logistical methods be applied in a hospital environ-
ment? Can industrial processes be transferred to a medical setting? In which areas
do emergency services outshine all the supply chain managers in industry and
trade?
The interplay of IT and logistics know-how opens up new options and perspectives.
This is an area in which vertical cooperation is already a reality: hospitals, emer-
gency services, pharmacies and logistics service providers work hand in hand, pro-
viding an inspiring example for all sectors of industry.

Success Factor Humanitarian Logistics
Acute and ongoing disasters call for reliable and flexible logistics
solutions. The BVL working group “Humanitarian Logistics” out-
lines the key role played by logistics in the humanitarian field. This
includes not only disaster risk reduction, in which for example sea-
ports are prepared for the challenges of crisis situations. Moreover
disaster aid partnerships between companies and aid organisations
are created, geared towards saving lives and mitigating suffering in
the short term.

Forecasts predict that the total transport volume in Germany will
grow by 75 percent up to the year 2025. Parallel to the increasing
power of German industry, the policymakers must expect corre-
sponding growth in other areas, in particular in terms of the amount
of freight that needs to be transported. In addition, Germany is seen
as Europe’s primary transit country. How can the transport infra-
structure keep pace with this growth? Representatives from the
fields of politics and industry discuss transport in tomorrow’s world
and outline future challenges and solutions.

Focus on the Trading Sector
The trading sector is affected by high volatility and hard-to-predict
consumer patterns. Trading logistics can increase agility and flexi-
bility. While process optimisation in the branch outlet has become
a key criterion in the stationary retail segment, the main factors in
online trading are handling returns and ensuring same-day deliver-
ies. How do today’s traders deal with these challenges?

Holistic Procurement Management
Hidden costs are everywhere, but how can they be identified and
optimised? The TCO principle (total cost of ownership) is a proven
instrument to ensure holistic procurement management and pin-
point all cost drivers. It is not only of relevance to purchasing deci-
sions but can also help to create transparency along the entire
value added chain and therefore to ensure more effective corpo-
rate management. Companies from different sectors outline their
approaches.

Success Factor Refurbishing
Particularly in times of increasing scarcity of resources, the resale of
a used or repaired product is advantageous for companies not only
from an ecological but also from an economic point of view - but
these re-use processes pose many different challenges. This is why
there is still huge untapped potential for additional business in the
form of refurbishing, remanufacturing or recommerce in many sec-
tors.

The German Success Model – Outlook, Potential and Risks
The German economy is the cornerstone and the future hope of the eurozone. Dual-
element vocational training, employee participation and our innovation networks are
considered role models all over the world. At the same time, competitors are becom-
ing increasingly strong in the sales markets in our globalised world and production
locations are becoming centres of research and development. What are the implica-
tions for the German success model?

Business with Purpose
More and more people are looking for products that “make sense” and that promote
the development of humankind and our planet. This was the inspiration for the cre-
ation of the organic food retailer Alnatura almost 30 years ago. How can we rethink
industry and business so that we act in a meaningful and ecologically sustainable
way?

Production and Services in the Digital Era
The “Fourth Industrial Revolution” is a term used to describe the integrated produc-
tion operations of the future, where autonomous, self-organising production enti-
ties are networked with each other and supported by intelligent products. Parallel
to this, there are indications of a structural change in the classic service sector. The
perspective is that the use of secure cloud infrastructures and the provision of new
service platforms will lay the foundation for the future “Internet of Services”.

30th International Supply Chain Conference
The German Award for SCM, to be pre-
sented by BVL for the 30th time this year,
is a highly prestigious award among
logistics and supply chain managers in
all sectors of industry. The motto for the
first time this year is “Wanted: Innova-
tion”. While the focus of the jury under
Chairman Prof. Bernd Gottschalk has pre-
viously been on integrated logistics solu-
tions, the spotlight in 2013 is on innova-
tions. Entrants may submit descriptions
of methods and processes that have
resulted in improvements to SCM and
logistics. The concept should preferably
already have been implemented in prac-
tice. It is all about the innovative charac-
ter, implementation and outcomes of the
concept. The entry should be as specific
as possible. Facts, figures and data play a
decisive role. The deadline for entries is
June 30, 2013.
www.bvl.de/en/gascm
Every year, the International Supply Chain Con-
ference is also the setting for award ceremo-
nies. Which companies and which scientists
have developed outstanding concepts for the
future organisation of logistics and supply
chain management? Which current and hands-
on theses present innovative approaches?
Day-to-day logistics thrives on innovation
and inspiration from the world of science
– the kinds of ideas that are found in dis-
sertations, for example. This is why BVL
has been presenting the Science Award
for SCM for 20 years now. This award is
conferred in recognition of outstanding
academic work of young scientists that
is of particular real-world relevance. The
award also goes to the supervising insti-
tutes, as they generated decisive stim-
uli and created the necessary conditions
for targeted work and research. The Jury
Chairman is Prof. Michael Schenk. The
award winner is chosen in a two-stage
process. The ceremony for the award,
which is once again being supported by
BASF in 2013, takes place on the Thursday
of the conference.
www.bvl.de/en/sascm
BVL confers its Thesis Award, which this
year is being supported by DB Schenker,
in recognition of outstanding Bachelor,
Master and “Diplom” theses. The theses
should be application-focused and topical
and should be of relevance to logistics. In
2012, 84 university lecturers put forward
the best thesis they supervised in the
field of logistics in the preceding year and
nominated the student in question for
the award. The award winner receives a
certificate and an invitation to the Inter-
national Supply Chain Conference. Nom-
inations for the 2013 Thesis Award can be
submitted between June 3 and 30, 2013.

The annual Supply Chain Day will take place for the sev-
enth time on April 10, 2014 under the motto “Logis-
tics paves the way”. Since its launch in 2008, this day of
action has proven a great success; on the last such day in
April 2013, around 36,000 visitors found out more about
logistics solutions and services at 381 events. The con-
cept: many companies, organisations and educational
institutions provide the public at large with the chance
to take a look behind the scenes, to obtain information
and to gain insights into logistical processes and activ-
ities. Around 640 companies and organisations were
involved in Supply Chain Day in 2013. And, as in 2012,
career prospects in the logistics sector, whether in indus-
try, trade or logistics services, was one of the central
themes. Many companies made valuable contacts with
school and university students who were interested in
training options, degree courses and career entry follow-
ing graduation.
Companies and organisations who would like to open
their doors and showcase their logistics expertise on
April 10, 2014 can find more information and registration
