1. Exercising Your Brain

Our brain has two sides which are the right and left side. The left side of the brain is all about
analyzing and verbalizing. The right side is about visual and perceptive. I use both sides of my
brain when drawing. By exercising the right side of your brain, it helps you to see differently
and produce a better looking portrait.
One of the key points in drawing realistic pencil portraits is to have high contrast. A low
contrast portrait will result in a less realistic effect. This is a common mistake that most people
make but yet they do not realize it.
In this practice, you will learn to use your right brain to overcome this problem.

2. Step1: Choose a reference picture that you think has a very high level of difficulty and
impossible to draw.
Step2: Print it out and turn the reference picture upside down. Use a paper to cover any part of
the reference picture randomly. That’s the purpose of this exercise, forget about what you’re
drawing. Focus only on what you see, there are only hues and values. Do not turn around the
reference picture while you’re doing this exercise.
Step3: Start to draw the portrait without the covered part. Once you’re done, uncover the part
that you left and continue drawing it. After finished drawing, turn it around and you will see that
you’ve completed a drawing with just focusing on hues and values.
If you can practice by using your left brain of knowing which individual parts of the person
you’re drawing and right brain to focus on hues and values, you will improve your drawing
dramatically.
Practice by following from step 1 to step 3. The reference picture should be one that you think
is really difficult to draw.
