This document promotes the benefits of aligning with influencers to grow one's network and make money. It claims that influencers bring not only their audience but also their audience's network due to the viral nature of social media as described by Metcalfe's Law. A key message is that influencers can drive real action and influence through their connections if one spends time with the right people who will help you succeed financially and professionally.

of the 5 people
you spend the most
time with.'

3 years ago I exited my food manufacturing business that For 17 years owned and ran.,
At its peak had over R80m rands sales a year and employed close on 400 people.
I hated that business and It took me 5 years to exit the business.
In the last two years of that process THIS is the amount of money i lost:
12 million rands
The Pain + anguish of retrenching over 300 staff be with me forever.
300 staff meant 300 families lost their income and often their confidence.
It was a lesson I would rather not have learned.
It caused anger and depression in my family and my life as well as the staff who were affected.
AND Remember that it was not just a staff member and their immediate family, but their family network and friends that were affected.
In the midst of this pain and depression
I called a steak and beer night at my home with
4 friends who are successful business owners in their own right.
I asked what I was going to do because I couldn't see a future for the first time in my adult life.
All i knew is I wanted to run around town on my Vespa, with my laptop and get paid to have interesting conversations.
A few months later was on the ski slopes of europe with these people, which included the same 4 people i had steak and beer with.
I was unemployed as I had just resigned from a menail stop gap job
I was R30k in credit card debt.
6 years in a row i went away with a combination of these guys who had helped me with business advice and strategies through goodtimes and bad.
These Business networks were to become hugely beneficial to me later.
One of these friends is Rich mulholland who owns Missing link and a few other businesses.
He coined the term Snowcon –
it was his idea to combine the passion for snowboarding and his passion for business and snow CONFERENCE was born.
Rich and his partners in his business did and still do – go away once a year and strategize their business for the coming months.
They Board most of the day and formal meetings in the late afternoons.
Sitting on the chair lifts and slopes of europe gives us all the chance to have in depth business discussions
and over the weeks break allows some opposing business to drop their guard somewhat and help each other build greater companies and manage the pains of being an entrepreneur.
We have no distractions on the slopes
No email, no phone calls – just time to think.
People say the best ideas come to them in the shower – its a lie – the best ideas come to you on the slopes.
One of those snowcon guys is Craig rodney
At the time I was deep in thought, deep in discussion and deeper in my credit card debt,
I had no job security or business of my own.
While sitting on one of those chair lifts in Italy with Craig
He said something quiet profound ,as he usually does:
He said:
People like you and i have the innate ability to always make money.
It took me by surprise and i spend a long time thinking about that meant.
Was he just being cocky or was this something he had thought about before?
After a few days I did what anyone else would do when
finding answers to a deep profound statement.
I wrote a blog post...
What i believe craig meant was
something we did set us apart from the mediocre and makes us successful.
I believe that something is networking and more importantly, the ABILITY to network.
I understood that i was a naturally good networker
who always grew my circle of friends and collegues, without asking for anything in return.
I believe in paying it forward and karma.
That Italian snowcon ended
7 days later i came back and started my new consultancy.
7 day after that I had signed found my first 7 clients
I had hit the proverbial jackpot and the
R12million I had lost suddenly became the best money I had ever spent.
I started with No money an no clients and now have over 60 clients and a problem meeting the demand.
I also run around on my vespa with my laptop having amazing conversations.
Nicholas kristakis who spoke at Ted.
25 year study into obesity and social networks
What he scientifically discovered is:
If your friends are obese you are 45% more likely to be obese.
If your friends friends are obese you are 25% more likely to be obese too.
Obesity is not a contagious disease but
Behaviours and norms that yu expose yourself too are contagious
This is an snapshot of nicholas’ study.
2200 people
Bigger dots and yellow dots are the obese people. See how they cluster together?
Again, Obesity is not contagious so why do they all group together?
The same principles apply with money and influence.
People you surround yourself with will set the standard or average you believe is the norm.
The kind of money people in your network make and spend will become the benchmark you will live by.
All The guys on snowcon saw the value of doing on those slopes for our businesses.
but how could we Monetize snowcon?
We all understood our social media reach and real life influence BUT did not know how could we sell this.
We talked about this on each of the last 3 tours but nothing ever happened
because we came back to our business and the idea faded till the next snowcon

There is Lots of talk about social influence and brand ambassadors
but we all wanted to deliver Real life influence that was meaningful.
We looked at what we could offer a company or brand what our influence could deliver.
We understood that a lot of what we are and talk about is spread to our audience and our audiences audience.
GEORGE GILDER created this law in 1993 – before social media was even a thing.
It was buit to describe a communications network but is valid for real life and social networks.
The more people you know and the more people they know in turn gives your network real value.
In real life and online.
(HOLD CELL PHONE) The more cell phones that exist on a network the greater the value in owning a cell phone is.
Jay Baer is an American marketing consultant, speaker, and author (of the New York Times bestselling book, Youtility.)
If we were to deliver any real value to a brand or corporate we needed to drive action, find leads and show some real world value.
So now we understood that Snowcon needed to be something where we used our influence and our network to drive an action.
And hopefully a measurable action.
Proudly one of my clients spotted what we were doing and boldly approached Club Med to sell the snowcon idea as an awareness campaign –
This became became #snowclub15
The drive was to create awareness in our larger network to their new ski Resorts in val Thorens France.
We created an online and traditional PR campaign and went to the resort to create content that would spark a conversation
With our network , flaunt our influence and drive awareness to the new resort.
This years crew of 10 influencers + partners
Each influencer is business owner and influencer in the digital business space.
Here are some of the Brandseye campaign stats that exclude traditional offline exposure:
R2,4 Advertising Value Equivalent
Over 10M opportunities to view
We also managed to get a few people to actually book their next holiday at the resort.
There was social media influence and real life influence.
Real influence is me talking to you about club med and how epic that place is.
Reid hoffman is the founder of linkedin.
He is a man that truly understands networking and the power of a network.
Reid said: its Better to be the BEST connected rather than the MOST connected
Understand that less is more and quality trumps quantity. Always.
Your network is a living thing that growns and wains over time and needs to be nurtured consistantly.
Look around at your 5 closest friends.
You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most amount of time with.
This quote was originally said Jim Rohn, motivational speaker self help guru
So whats the lesson?
Dont be average.
Spend your time associating with people that are above your average
our perception of average will change .
and so will you.
Thank you.
